Daily Chronicle: SteamCon 2017 Recap

Posted on December 4th, 2017 under , , , , , , . Posted by

This past weekend was Steamforged Games SteamCon USA held at the Westin Hotel in Lombard, IL.  Since they announced the location of SteamCon USA a few months ago being in the suburbs of Chicago (literally 6 miles from where I grew up, and now only 120 miles) I knew I had to attend this convention and I flew out my oldest son from Arizona to also attend the event.

This was the first year for SteamCon USA so it is it’s infant stages and that showed a little bit while at the Westin.  For quite a few years, the Westin was the home for AdeptiCon (before they outgrew this space) and it is a really nice hotel whith a Grand Ballroom, 2 Junior Ballroom’s and then quite a few other rooms that can be partioned off.  I knew that Steamforged would not be in the Gran Ballroom, but I had at least expected it to be in one of the Junior Ballrooms.  Instead they held their events in multiple smaller rooms.  They had one larger room for the Tournaments and World Championships, one room for the Rookie League and Open Gaming (roughly around 50 gaming mats) and then a room for the Store and their Seminars.  I think if they would have been in the Junior Ballroom with everything all together (besides the Store) it would not have felt as isolated as it did.  Anyways, that is just my opinion and this was their first year.

My plan going into this years SteamCon was mainly to catch up with my son and get some games in with him in the Rookie League.  Seeing how I only had a handful of games under my belt, I was not quite ready to play in any of the Tournaments, plus the Tournaments take most of the day and my youngest son (12) also came with us so he could hang out with his older brother, so I had to make sure he was not too bored and be able to take them out for lunches and dinners.

Thursday November 30th, 2017

This was our travel day.  I had a later start than I wanted to leaving Michigan (my son had a field trip), but we still arrived at the hotel around 6:30 PM local time.  My oldest son was landing at Midway airport at 9:30 PM so we had a little time just to relax in the room and we also checked out the rooms where the events would be taking place.  After we picked up my oldest from the airport, we headed to Rock Bottom Brewery next to the hotel for a very late night dinner and brew.

Friday December 1st, 2017

8:00 AM kicked off the beginning of SteamCon USA and we headed downstairs to get in line to register and pick up pur weekend badges.  Seeing how the attendance this year was only around 180 people, the line was not too long.  Badge pick up was taking place in the store, so once you checked in, you then can continue on to do your shopping.  A few weeks ago Steamforged announced that the second boxes for the Farmer’s Guild and Blacksmith’s Guild were going to be available for purchase with a strict 1 per person, luckily I was with my two sons (and my youngest does not play) so I was able to ‘ninja’ a set for a few people back in Arizona.

After we completed our shopping we took our merchandise back up to our room then gathered our Guilds to bo back down for a game.  It has been quite awhile since my last game of Guild Ball, so we took the first game very slow.  Due to our slowness and getting really close to 1:00 PM (and needing to get lunch), we called the game 8-0 in favor of the Fisherman.
Fisherman’s 8
Alchemist’s 0
When we got back from lunch it was time to get in another game, and this time we decided to play with the game clock, 45:00 minutes each.  Playing on the clock really helped a lot and sped up the game.  With 27 seconds left to go, my Butcher’s were able to prevail over the Hunters.
Butcher’s 12
Hunter’s 0
That wrapped up Guild Ball gaming for the day.
When we got back from dinner (an old Chinese restaurant we used to always eat when living in the area) we attended the SteamCon Mixer.  Also a little disappointed in this.  I knew Steamforged would not be giving us free drinks, but I really thought they would have rolled in a ‘cash bar’.  Instead you had you had to purchase your drinks in the restaurant at the front of the hotel, then bring them all they way back to the rooms.  We did not stay long and instead heading back to the gaming room where the three of us played Shadow Games, a quick card game based on the Free Cities.  My youngest son actually really enjoyed this game quite a bit and it gave him something to do.

Saturday December 2nd, 2017
Got in two more games of Guild Ball in today, lunch, Empire of the State seminar, dinner, and then the SteamCon Keynote, and finally some more Shadow Games.

I played the Mason’s Guild in this game (for the first time) vs Blacksmith’s and just lost.
Mason’s 10
Blacksmith’s 12

In this game, with just 5 seconds to spare, Engineer’s captured the win.  Even if I would have clocked out, you are a given 1 minute to complete an Activation, after that minute you concede a point.  I was up quite a bit so I still had some time to spare.

Engineer’s 13
Hunter’s 0

Sunday December 3rd, 2017
Sunday we decided to make the day a bit shorter.  We played one game of Guild Ball and then cashed out our Rookie League tokens for some Guild Ball mugs and SteamCon limited edition Cards.

Butcher’s 12
Blacksmith’s 0
I really enjoyed the Butcher’s this weekend.  I think I am going to have to concentrate on playing them some more.

So did I have fun? Yea it was a good time.  If I was a little bit more experienced I think I would have signed up for at least one tournament.  Now after 5 games in one weekend, I do feel a lot more confident with the rules.
Will I be going to SteamCon USA 2018? That is To Be Determined.  It really will come down to the location.  If it is someplace again in the Midwest or within 6 hours of driving, I really think so.  If not, then next Fall we may attend the NOVA Open instead.

Daily Chronicle: SteamCon Swag Box

Steamforged Games announced over the weekend the contents of the SteamCon Swag Box.  SteamCon UK is taking place this weekend November 17th-19th and SteamCon USA will be December 1st-3rd (Chicago area).

I have not gotten in a game of Guild Ball in quite awhile, but I am looking forward to SteamCon.  My oldest son is flying in from Arizona for the event, and I plan on getting in a lot of friendly games with him trying out all my different guilds.
Anyway’s back to the contents of the Swag Box.

  • 1x Metal Skulk Miniature
  • 1x Old Jake’s Coaster
  • 1x Guild Tattoo Sheet
  • 6x Random Guild Cards (Yes, they’re the new errata cards)
  • 1x Union in Chains Ball
  • 1x SteamCon Goal Token
  • 1x SteamCon Bottle Opener
  • 2x SteamCon Bang Sticks
  • 1x SteamCon Lanyard & SteamCon Ribbon

Steamforged also surprised us with an announcement that the next two 6-man boxes for the Farmer’s and Blacksmith’s Guild will be sold at SteamCon with a strict 1 per customer.  Good thing I have 2 son’s coming with me.

Guild Ball: Blacksmith’s Guild Completed

Posted on October 23rd, 2017 under , , . Posted by

I mentioned in my first post this morning it was going to be a busy day in news for Guild Ball, and her we are the fourth post of the day.  With my recent post on Blacksmith’s Guild ‘Furnace’, I now have completed the Blacksmith’s Guild   I was able to meet my goal line date by the end of October.   I wanted to have them completed by the end of the month so that it will free up the month of November for other models, and so that I know that the Blacksmith’s are completed and ready to go for SteamCon USA the first weekend in December.

So what is going to his the painting table next?  Possibly the Hunter’s Guild.  My wife flies home from Arizona late tonight and I should know tomorrow morning if she is bringing along my son’s Hunter’s Guild.  If she did, then that Guild will be next with a deadline by the end of November (when my oldest flies in for SteamCon).  I am not sure if he is sendinig the entire Guild, or just the 6 models he wants to play with at SteamCon, guess I’ll find out tomorrow.
If the Hunter’s do not arrive, then we may mix in some Union models and Mortician’s that I still have to finish.  I may lean towards the Mortican’s since I have less to finish to complete that Guild.
Then who knows….not related to Guild Ball, but I always like the models from Malifaux, but never played the game.  Debating on getting in a demo game and possibly picking up some models.  I am still undecided on this one (I do not get to go out play that often), so for me it is more the collecting of the game (and I have every Guild Ball model there is, not included all the Limited Edition models).  I still have plenty of Warmachine/Hordes models also, but currently that game is not doing much for me…we’ll see what happens…my oldest really likes Warmachine/Hordes, so if we convince him to move to Michigan, I’ll be able to get to play that game more often along with more Guild Ball.

Guild Ball: Blacksmith’s Guild ‘Furnace’

Model 6 of 6 for the Blacksmith’s Guild and we have the Master ‘Furnace’, a Center Midfielder for the Guild.

I put off painting ‘Furnace’ till the end becasue I was unsure on how his flaming sword would turn out, it is not the greatest, but I think it looks really good on the table top.
I doubt I will be able to give these guys a try this week (my van is still in the shop), but maybe next week Wednesday 11/1 I’ll drive up to Grand Rapids for a game and see how the Guild does on the Pitch.

Guild Ball: Blacksmith’s Guild ‘Cinder’

Posted on October 22nd, 2017 under , , . Posted by

Getting closer to completing the Blacksmit’s Guild for Guild Ball.  Today we have model 5 of 6 with ‘Cinder’, an Apprentice Winger for the Guild.  ‘Cinder’s’ Master is ‘Furnace’ who is up next on the painting table and my final model for the Guild.  Once the Blacksmith’s are completed, it will give me some time to work on my son’s Hunter’s Guild (as long as he still sends them back from Arizona tomorrow with my wife).  If the Hunter’s do not arrive, I still have plenty of Union models to work on along with a few Mortician’s left on the shelf that need to be completed.

Back to ‘Cinder’, I am really liking the Character Trait Hot Shot, it sounds like that technically she can Tackle the ball away from someone who is 6” away, this is something I am going to have to look into before actually playing her.  The more I am reading the cards on the player’s, the more I am liking their playstyle.  Let’s just hope my son does not steal this Guild from me when he visits for SteamCon USA (I am hoping he will just buy his own Blacksmith’s Guild).

Guild Ball: Blacksmith’s Guild ‘Iron’

Posted on October 20th, 2017 under , , . Posted by

2/3’s of the Blacksmith’s Guild is now complete.  To go along with ‘Ferrite’ who was posted yesterday, today we have her Apprentice ‘Iron’.  He does not look like someone who can score, but his Heroic Play Tryhard is really good.  If ‘Iron’ is within [2”] of the enemy goal-post and in possesion of the ball-marker, he can take a Shot during his activation without soending MP, plus the Shot gaines [-1] TN, so along with the general rule of being within [4”] and gaining [-1] TN, ‘Iron’ would only need a 2 on the dice to score.

Half way through getting the Blacksmith’s Guild completed, my timeline is looking pretty good so far.  Today is Master and a Striker for the Guild in ‘Ferrite’.

If chosen as the Captain for the Team, she has a very good Legendary Play that I really like in Tong in Cheek [6” Pulse], This model gains [+2”/+2”] MOV plus other friendly Guild models within the pulse gain [+2”/+2”] MOV and Hobble.  This would be really nice if it was for the entire game instead of once per game, but oh well, it still can be very useful.

Guild Ball: Blacksmith’s Guild ‘Anvil’

Posted on October 18th, 2017 under , , . Posted by

The other day I showcased the Apprentice ‘Sledge’, and today we have his Master ‘Anvil’.  I really enjoyed painting this model and believe he came out quite nice.  The model ‘Anvil’ reminded me from back in the day when I used to paint Dwarves for Warhammer Fantasy Battles (probably because of his long beard) and they were my favorite army to paint.

I am really liking the stats I am seeing on the Blacksmith’s cards, it seems like they are Guild that can score, and put the beat down on enemy models.  I think they are going to be a fun Guild to try out.

So far I am on track to getting the Blacksmith’s completed by month’s end, we shall see how much I am able to get done this weekend.

Guild Ball: Blacksmith’s Guild ‘Sledge’

Posted on October 15th, 2017 under , , . Posted by

Well after a little delay and sidetracked by a few different models, I finally started on the Blacksmith’s Guild and elected to start with ‘Sledge’, an Attacking Midfielder and an Apprentice for the Guild.  ‘Sledge’ did not look to difficult to paint and wanted to test on my color palette on this model.  I like to try and paint close to studio colors and to me the Blacksmith’s look to be painted with shades of Grey.

Just like with my Farmer’s Guild  I do not plan to rush the painting on this Guild and plan to spend a little bit more time with them.  Plus with ‘real life’ getting in the way today and some of next weekend, my goal is to complete them by the end of the month, that will then give me the whole month of November to finish what ever I need to in time for SteamCon USA.
The Blacksmith’s Guild are a little different than the other Guilds in Guild Ball.  All of the other Guilds have Captains and Mascots, with the Blacksmith’s, they have Masters and Apprentices.  ‘Sledge’ is an Apprentice to his Master ‘Anvil’.  Being an Apprentice to a Master usually grants some abilities in gameplay, and in the case of ‘Sledge’, he has a Character Trait called Tutelage [Anvil] when he starts his activation within [6”] of ‘Anvil’, he may use a Character Play once during its activation without spending Influence.
‘Sledge’ also has some really good stats and can be a scoring threat, and a high threat to get Taken Out’s.  With a TAC 5 plus the Character Play  Piledriver that grants him [+3] net hits and a Momentous 7 damage on his Playbook….watch out.
