Introducing the Farmers Guild for Steamforged Games Guild Ball…

The Farmer’s Guild: The Honest Land
The Farmer’s Guild: The Honest Land
“Farming is a senseless pursuit. You sow what you may reap, then you reap what you may sow. Senseless.”
— Obulus, Mortician’s Guild

Honest as a day’s work, Grange is no country bumpkin. Filled with unflinching resolve and unbreakable constitution, he’s just a little rough around the edges. When trouble crops up, he’ll plant himself to face it head-on.

Grange is all about grit: cultivating strategies planted at the start of a game, he waits for his plans to mature before reaping the fruits of his labor.  Strong communities are built around food we trust to nourish our bodies, and this Guild Ball roster is no different. Emboldened by their sturdy captain, his resilient team works hard to reap what they sow. Patient coaches looking for a Guild that plays more like a family than a team will enjoy the hearty Farmers.

Contents: 6 players (Grange, Peck, Windle, Bushel, Harrow, Jackstraw), Ball (pumpkin), Goal Token (a millstone), 3D Terrain Piece (pile of baskets), tokens and health dials for all players
Notes: Pre-assembled PVC

  • The Farmer’s Guild has an entirely new play style that coaches will want to experience featuring the unique reaping and sowing mechanics.
  • The Farmers ‘plant’ harvest Markers throughout the turn to ‘reap’ later on for huge in-game benefits
  • In a world of bad guys, Farmers are the good guys that win through hard work and elbow grease. With a complete roster ready to hit the pitch, this team is the perfect way for a coach to to take the pitch as quickly as possible.

Farmer’s Guild Dice
The Fishermen's Guild: The Changing Tides
Farmer’s Guild Dice

“Roll out the hay bales! We’ve got some workhorses to feed.”
— Bushel, Farmer’s Guild
If you want to keep your focus on the pitch then you’re going to need a decent set of dice to roll. And the Farmer’s Guild have provided dice that are the cream of the crop. Crucial for those decisive moments, the sight of a faction emblem heralds another step on the road to victory. With 10 lovely, orange marbled dice you’ll never need to stop the action. These dice are truly befitting of hardworking harvester.

Contents: 10x Farmer’s Guild Dice

Unboxing – Dark Souls the Board Game (Part Four)

Posted on May 19th, 2017 under , , . Posted by

In part one we looked at the main components from the box, in part two we looked at the rank and file creatures and in part three saw the monstrous boss and sub-boss our heroes will be fighting…now lets look at the heroes…

First a brief introduction courtesy of the game manufacturers…
Dark Souls™ – The Board Game is a strategically challenging, deeply immersive combat exploration game for 1-4 players set in the Dark Souls™ universe. Players choose from a number of core character classes and explore dangerous locations full of monsters, treasures, and deadly boss fights.

Designed specifically for the Dark Souls™ universe and introducing a number of innovative gameplay mechanics, with world-class miniatures faithful to the rich universe, this game delivers an experience that captures the very essence of the original video games.

You can see larger versions of the pictures by clicking on them and they’re at a high enough resolution so you can get a good idea of the level of detail.

Here are the heroes you can select from to play as and some comparison pictures of them vs. the various in game enemies.

Knight

Warrior

Herald

Assassin

Dark Souls Heroes – Size Comparison

Thoughts and comments are (as usual) most welcome.

The creatures your heroes will be battling against are iconic enemies from the Dark Souls video game and are roughly divided into Bosses, Sub-Bosses and some ‘Rank and File’ enemies. Each one has their own stat card while the more powerful ones also have cards related to a number of special attacks at their disposal. I’ve also (where possible) included pictures of the equivalent creatures from the video game to give you some basis for comparison.

Gargoyle

Titanite Demon

Boreal Outrider Knight

Winged Knight

Ornstein and Smough

Dancer of the Boreal Valley

We’ll look at the player characters next time as well as some scale comparisons between them and their enemies…

Thoughts and comments are (as usual) most welcome.

Unboxing – Dark Souls the Board Game (Part One)

Posted on May 15th, 2017 under , , . Posted by

This was pretty much an impulse buy based purely on the look of the miniatures rather than having any real familiarity with the video game on which it’s based so any comparisons between the two will have to be done by any game fans reading this rather than me…

Dark Souls: The Board Game
It came in a box…unsurprisingly…
…This was a bit of a surprise however…
Dark Souls: The Board Game – Booklet
The game comes with an instruction booklet containing all the rules you’ll need to play a game as well as a section focusing on running a campaign rather than a one-off adventure. There’s artwork on the majority of the pages which is a nice touch and the rules are well explained in both word and diagram form. Here are some sample pages to give you an idea…

Dark Souls: The Board Game – Dice and Tokens
The box contains a handy container for the cards necessary to play the game though once unwrapped they do slide about a bit so some elastic bands or bags might be an idea.
There’s far to many cards to show you them all but I will show close-ups of the cards for the various creatures in their own feature…
…there’s also some dice and cubes to use as markers…
…as well as card tokens and some dials that you’ll need to assemble yourself…
Once assembled the dials look like this…there’s some clear plastic pieces that clip through the middle in order to hold them together and allow them to rotate…there’s also nowhere to store these properly in the box once they’re assembled so if you don’t want them rattling around the box then a bag of some kind is probably a good ides…

Dark Souls: The Board Game – Game Board
The game tiles are sturdy enough and well detailed as well as being double-sided. The ‘bonfire’ tile shown first below is your home base and the rest are the locations for your various adventures. Here’s pictures of both sides of them…

Dark Souls: The Board Game – Miniatures
The miniatures are surprisingly detailed for board game pieces so they’ll get their own detailed look in part two…

The latest Guild Ball news from Steamforged Games…

From the lure of gold to the shadow of a tyrant, it’s never been easier to find your Guild and hit the pitch. Friday, July 21 four more expanded starter sets are coming to a game store near you! Creepy and controlling undertakers, nefarious mercenaries, explosive alchemists, primal hunters—which playstyle fits you?
The Alchemist’s Guild: The Lure of Gold

The Alchemist’s Guild: The Lure of Gold
MSRP: £50  $75  € 65  $100 AUD
“You wish for some wisdom on the Alchemists? Stay clear of the green smoke and get ready to run when the flasks start to fly.”
— Obulus, Morticians’ Guild
Roiling inside Midas is an unquenchable desire for power. Driven to madness by his acrid ambitions, he’s quick to exploit the chaos of flames and smoke on the pitch. At all costs, avoid his touch—it dooms all to the burdens of ruin.

Midas and his Alchemists engulf the pitch in deadly fumes and flames. These toxic effects quickly choke team movement, letting Midas score with his deceptive speed. Coaches who want to lick opponents with the fires of aggressive positioning will enjoy maiming their opponents with this toxic team.

The Lure of Gold is the team for you if…

  • Flasks, flames, poison, and alchemy are just a few of your favorite things.
  • You want a captain who’s a constant threat on the pitch and isn’t afraid to brag about it.
  • You want to cover the pitch in puddles of poison, clouds of smoke, walls of flame AND coach a robot butler.

The Hunter’s Guild: Blessed of the Sun Father
Blessed of the Sun Father

The Hunter’s Guild: Blessed of the Sun Father
“The Hunter’s Guild is dangerous. Each has lived a life of tracking, pursuing, and killing beasts far more feral and dangerous than you have ever seen. They bring a different set o’ skills to the game.”
– Greyscales, Fisherman’s Guild
A bestial captain with untamed power, Theron strikes with the frenzy of a cornered beast. Tempered by the hardships of war, his primal wrath pushes him to endure and survive. He lives for the thrill of the hunt. Every chase into dense forest leads his prey to face their brutal end.

Theron’s Hunters are a rabid pack. Only when their opponent is most vulnerable will they pounce. Using traps and thick forests, they control the flow of the game by herding opponents directly into danger for brutal take-outs. Patient coaches looking for a fast pack of players to ensnare their prey will enjoy the fury of these Hunters.

Blessed of the Sun Father is the team for you if…

  • Your hobbies include setting traps, stalking prey, and worshiping the sun.
  • You want a captain who disrupts goals with arrows to the knee and crippling snares.
  • You want to control the pitch with ferocious beasts and skilled hunters.
The Mortician’s Guild: The Master of Puppets
The Master of Puppets

The Mortician’s Guild: Master of Puppets
MSRP: £50  $75  € 65  $100 AUD
“When you play them, you have to surrender control. You can’t simply do what you want. You’ve got to force them to let you do it. Sounds easy? It’s not.”
– Greyscales, Fishermen’s Guild
Obulus’ veins course with dark power. Feared as much he is hated, he’s as foul as a living cadaver. Enslaving minds to obey his undying will, opponents are but meek instruments for victory. No one can escape his cruel grasp.

Obulus’ team of Morticians leave their opponents mourning in a wake of disruptive manipulation. Menacing and unforgiving, this team actively dismantles their opponent’s strategies. Coaches who want to outsmart and exploit their opponents will live for the Mortician’s Guild.

The Master of Puppets is the team for you if…
  • You love to play mind games and get inside your opponent’s head.
  • You always relate to the villain. Being the good guy is boring.
  • You want a captain who always has a dirty trick up his sleeve.
The Union: Shadow of the Tyrant
Shadow of the Tyrant

The Union: Shadow of the Tyrant
MSRP: £50  $75  € 65  $100 AUD
“Who are the Union? A mismatched bunch o’ mercenaries, scum and criminals for the most part. You wouldn’t want to meet any of them in a dark alley late at night.”
— Flint, Mason’s Guild
Despised by the righteous, Blackheart’s sole motivation is wealth. A trait befitting a former marauder of the sea. With a body count as far-reaching as the depths of his brutality, he’s as swift as shadows. Only death and ruin can keep up with this tyrannous captain.

The Union is a team of criminals with specialized strengths. Under the nefarious rule of Blackheart, his gang of thugs can quickly match his speed or strike with more damage for precision take-outs. Each a deadly tool with a purpose, the Union is the perfect team for Coaches who want a band of ruthless cutthroats with clear-cut strengths.

The Shadow of the Tyrant is the team for you if…
  • You like top hats and thuggery.
  • Your loyalty can be bought… for the right price.
  • You want a team of specialized players who can play for other Guilds.

Some Guild Ball news from Steamforged Games…

Hey Coach,

Are you looking to become a convert of the cogs? To swim with a new school? Or do you just want to run with knives? Then mark your calendars—Friday, June 23 it’s open season for new coaches to join the Butchers, Engineers, and Fishermen. Meet their Captains below.

The Butcher’s Guild: The Bloody Master

“You’re just meat to them. Weak, tender, soft meat. And they’re the Butchers.”
—    Greyscales, Fishermen’s Guild
Tougher than gristle, Ox sees Guild Ball as nothing but brutal blood sport. More merciless maniac than athlete, the master butcher has transformed the pitch into a kitchen nightmare—cleavers, knives, hooks, you name it, his team wields it. Why the cutlery? Because to this deranged butcher, everyone—even his teammates—is a succulent meat bag, crying out for pain.

The Bloody Master is the team for you if…

  • You’re a new coach who wants to pick up a knife and get to stabbing.
  • You prefer cleavers to clever ball tricks.
  • You want a captain whose focus is taking out players and making every game a ruthless bloodbath.
The Engineer’s Guild: The Instruments of War
The Engineer's Guild: The Instruments of War

“They have the most devastating potential of all teams at their fingertips.”
—    Midas, Alchemist’s Guild
Former dog of war. Ambitious tinkerer. Volatile genius. Ballista’s brilliance is as intimidating as his past. No longer squandering his talents on the waste of war, his newest gadgets and gizmos seek to quash the natural talents of man. Why train to be the best when you can simply build something better?

The Instruments of War are the team for you if…

  • Coordinated Mechanica Mayhem was the name of your former band.
  • You think the best defense is a precision offense.
  • You want a bully of a captain whose go-to shutdown strategy is an arrow to the face.
The Fishermen’s Guild: The Changing Tides
The Fishermen's Guild: The Changing Tides

“Ain’t no other team that can catch ‘em. Until someone seriously gets their game on, the Fishermen’s Guild will keep on winning.”
–    Flint, Mason’s Guild
As a cunning predator, Shark is the kind of captain crowds love to watch and players hate to face because he’s aggressively fast. And he’s not shy about showing off. Circling the currents of the pitch, his plays aim to shame—he darts in, steals the ball, and sinks a shot in a flash of blue. Fading back into the murky shadows, he patiently waits to strike again.

The Changing Tides are the team for you if…

  • You prefer brains over brawn.
  • Your dream captain is a silent predator, one of the faster strikers on the pitch.
  • You want to reel in the points with sleek, flashy goals.

Dark Souls the Board Game is coming soon…

Dark Souls the Board Game is Coming!
In the Age of Kickstarter, Dark Souls: The Board Game was unformed, shrouded by funding goals. A land of everlasting campaigns, it’s fate was uncertain. But then there were the Unkindled, and with the Unkindled came certainty. Backers and excitement, render previews and stretch goals, and at last… ship dates!

With faithful goodwill, let it be known we’ve unleashed a miasma of death: Dark Souls: The Board Game (core game) has started shipping today to our loyal backers.

The Age of Death begins!

Be wary brave traveler—amongst shipping, accursed elements lie beyond our control, so hold fast as delivery may take up to 6 weeks to fulfill.

Not among these chosen (backers)? Your chance to pledge eternal life to secure a copy lies ahead. The coming darkness will curse the masses May 26 at your local game store.

Take heed, Unkindled. This will be your next chance to claim a copy of Dark Souls: The Board Game (core game), so seek out a store near you before it’s too late.

Praise the Sun!
