Queendomino & Lords of Waterdeep

I recently had twice the opportunity to play eurogames. The first one was Queendomino. As I understand it, it’s an enhanced version of Kingdomino, though I’ve never played the latter. Queendomino looks like a typical specimen of its kind: There is an intricate scoring system, so you only know if you’ve won (or even if you’re leading) at the very end of the game. There are no dice, chance is limited to drawing the terrain tiles. There are many different ways of acquiring points and many strategies are possible. The mechanics look well thought-out and balanced and I’d say that, objectively, it’s a very good game. However, I didn’t enjoy it that much. I don’t play many eurogames, and when playing Queendomino I was reminded of the reason for this. There is a theme, but it is irrelevant. Everything is very abstract. There is no story, the only purpose of the game is to understand and exploit the mechanics well enough to accumulate the most points. In the end, it feel

Painting Wargaming Figures: WWII in the Desert

Andy Singleton has been modelling and painting most of his life and has been a professional commission figure painter for some years now. Here he shares his experience and tips of the trade with those collecting figures for the North African campaigns in WWII.The four main sections of the book cover British, Italian, German and US troops, as well as tips on assembly and painting camouflage uniforms. Each section is divided into three levels of complexity, 'conscript', 'regular' and 'elite', allowing the reader to build up an array of techniques as they gain confidence and experience. The emphasis is on achievable results and practical advice that is applicable to painting units or whole armies for wargaming purposes in a reasonable time frame, not on spectacular individual display pieces. Most of the figures featured in the numerous illustrations are sized either 28mm or 20mm but the techniques described are easily adaptable to smaller sizes and both plastic and metal figures are covered.Andy's clear, step-by-ste

Introducing our New Contributor: Ultravanillasmurf

Jason has kindly invited me to contribute to this blog.I am of an age where the Nuclear Apocalypse was part of my fictional background. From Andre Norton to Philip K Dick.  I read stories of living in the post nuclear age, but without the existential angst of those who had lived through the very public spat that was the Cuban Missile Crisis. We had been under threat of nuclear annihilation for longer than I had been alive and had made it through so far. Little did I know of the near misses in my lifetime such as Able Archer ’83.Even television provided images of the post-apocalyptic world. Survivors showed me a world where authority collapses and survivors behave no better than the children in Lord of the Flies (a book we studied at school – more nuclear apocalypse). It was at University that I encountered Twilight 2000 (via Games Designer Workshop’s Traveller). We ran RPG and miniature games set in the world, and later in the more conventional Team Yankee timeline. This was ably assisted by GDW producing

My triumphant return

Right, hello everyone, thank you for waiting.*Checks watch**Winces**Checks calendar*Well, that's somewhat embarrassing, it appears to have been almost four months since my last post. This makes my previous ISIHPIAP relevant. I can only apologise.Anyway, while I've been slacking on the blog front, my paintbrush has been active at least. If it's alright with you (and, hell, even if it isn't), I'll split things across two posts as I've done stuff on two different projects. When will I get around to writing the second post, you wonder forlornly? Yeah, that's a problem. Errr, sorry.Right, that's enough of this contrived imaginary conversation nonsense. On with the first set of painted stuff, which turns out to be for everyone's favourite, my WW2 French force for Bolt Action. Pete and I have gone back to Bolt Action recently and we're working up to doing some of the tank battles from the Germany Strikes book. That needs me to have more armour and transports, so that's what I've mainly been working on, which

40k... not all is great

Okay, so during the past year and a half, Warhammer 40.000, or 40k for short, has been the game I've been playing and painting the most. This had mainly to do with the new edition coming out around the moment I got back in the hobby, and my clubmates embrased it to the fullest. And while I enjoyed the game a lot so far, I have my gripes with the current edition...First off, there is of course the whole Primaris thing.  Bigger, better, stronger posterboys, and more wounds each for not that big a price increase points wise.  And now the old characters are being upgraded to them as sell, making marine armies even more prelevalent. While the Astartes have always been the most popular army, this edition seems to be ruled by 3+ power armour forces when I look around.  Heck, in all this time, I still have to "meet" about half the armies out there it seems...And then getting one of the two main Marine forces becoming all two wounds troop, makes one wonder how Chaos can be winning in the fluff...A second i
