Year 2019

January Games

We got in a few games over the holidaze in December, and kind of tried to keep the ball rolling into the new year...Tuesday, 1 January 2019We started the new year off with a bang by having Kurtis and Brent over to play a few games. To start off Kurtis, Brent, Amanda and I played a game of Nations. I played Rome, Amanda played Greece, Kurtis played Egypt, and Brent played Persia. This was a bit of a departure from the last few games I’ve played where I played China and tried to focus on Stability and Grain production and more or less ignore military and wars and stuff and grow population as much as possible to get piles of meeples on industrial age buildings at the end of the game for loads of victory points. It hasn’t worked. I always end up going last (because military determines turn order) and get nothing good and never, EVER get to use my special ability (first to pass gain extra grain…)So, I thought I’d go a different direction and do military….It didn’t really work out either…There were startlingly few bui

WIP: Silver Skulls Reiver for Kill Team

Here we are with a test model for my upcoming Primaris Kill Team. Avid readers might remember I painted an Imperial Fists Intercessor a while ago, but since then, I changed my mind. Inspired by Paul Norton's White Dwarf article about the economics of painting, his custom Primaris chapter, and Darren Latham's Silver Skulls, I chose Silver Skulls, too. I wanted something grimdark and easy to paint, and the Silver Skulls paint scheme fits the bill perfectly. The armour is just a wash of 1:1 Nuln Oil Gloss and Army Painter Dark Tone Ink [Nuln Oil] over a basecoat of Army Painter Gun Metal [Leadbelcher], then a gentle drybrush of Army Painter Shining Silver [Stormhost Silver]. Very quick and easy to do. The idea to mix Nuln Oil Gloss and Dark Tone Ink/regular Nuln Oil comes from Paul Norton's article. The Nuln Oil Gloss reduces the surface tension even more, while the Dark Tone Ink/regular Nuln Oil adds some "body" to the wash and removes some of the gloss. Combined with some black, bone and red accents (all hidden

Character Name Generator - Stormcast Eternals

Well, it had to happen sooner or later - the poster boys and girls of Age of Sigmar now have a name generator! Last week’s vote put Stormcast Eternals neck-and-neck with the Beasts of Chaos, with both polling at 25%. So, I had a choice - and despite my (purely platonic) love of beastmen, I figured that a Stormcast Eternals name generator would be of most use to the most people. With the army being so popular, this really needed to be a cornerstone of this massive ongoing project to create name generators for every faction in the game, so I’m glad you guys voted for it. Perhaps this will be the foundation for name generators that focus on individual Stormhosts in the future. As for this week’s poll, I’m shaking things up a bit this time. Some of the previous options had sat there unloved for a few weeks now, so I’m throwing out all of them and starting afresh. As always there are 2 options for Order, 2 for Chaos, 1 for Death and 1 for Destr

Save 94 Acres at Two Revolutionary War Battlefields in New York State

For the first time in the Trust's history, we have an opportunity to save hallowed ground at the site of the famous Battle of Saratoga, a major turning point in the Revolutionary War.Along with 26 acres of land associated with this key moment in our country's history, we also have the chance to save 68 acres at Newtown, another important New York Revolutionary War battlefield. The purchase price for these 94 acres combined is $307,000, but thanks to a combination of state and local grants, we can save them for just $57,000 a tremendous $5.39-to-$1 match of your donation dollar! If you are like most people, you know more about Saratoga than Newtown, but I can assure you that both were crucial events in the Revolutionary War. At Saratoga, in fall of 1777, American soldiers met, defeated and forced a major British army to surrender. Their crucial victory renewed patriots' flagging hopes for independence, secured vital foreign recognition and support and changed the course of the war. Two years later at the Battle

Game 7: Kolgrima Stonetruth vs. Makeda and the Exalted Court

Round 1 of the ATC and we drew Magic Mike and the Freaky Four or Five or however many other players were on the team. I don't generally pay attention to the pairing process as I'm off to the side, getting in my game mode, so I don't know if I got drawn into Kirk Dalton, or if Chad selected Skorne for me.I think I went first, doing my typical thing. There was a lot of LOS blocking on his side, but he picked the side with the fire cloud to try to keep my Fire Eaters a bit more limited. However, he probably should have just given it to me as he needed more LOS to get his two Supreme Guardians into the game.He had two full units of Immortals to maneuver around all that terrain on his side of the table. Forests and Rubble, and an annoying Fire Cloud. Sure they can go incorporeal a the cost of a soul, but that's a limited resource that maybe he wants on supplying his two anchoring battle engines instead of his Extoller Advocates.Kolgrima feats early enough to lock down movement and shooting of the Supreme Guardian.

What I Painted in January 2019

Well, Lord of the Rings for the AHPC 9 of course, beginning 2019 as we ended 2018.But this month, I made some nice progress on finished units, due to two bonus rounds taking place. The first was Reconnaissance, for which I completed Faramir and 4 of his Rangers. The second bonus round was Sports, to which end I gave a nice olympic torch twist for the round... and completed 15 Uruk Hai as a result. But that wasn't all I finished this month, as I managed to actually get a regular entry up in the form of this force of Mordor, containing Mordor Orcs, two of the Nazgul and a big juicy Troll.I also managed to get Treebeard done, and add some small forests made out of heavily discounted christmas ornaments. So that brings this month to a lovely 41 models finished, not to bad a start for the new year!Onwards to February, and more AHPC goodness!

Alien Robots Invade the Old West

Board Games – Shadows of Brimstone is a treasure trove of miniatures, with so many expansions available you’e never starved for additional enemies or heroes. Every few months a few of these models find their way onto my painting table. The sculpts are pretty consistent, nothing overly detailed but just enough to look great with a little extra work. This Alien Robot is one of the XL Enemy packs you can pick up to add to your game. Its a pretty straightforward solid model that wasn’t difficult to assemble. Before reading the information about the model I assumed it was some type of rock golem or mechanical suit – I was close – this is a large monster you can fight whi

Live from the Past: SJG Pocket Boxes kickstarted

Loosely following up: Is SJG Banking on Nostalgia? Hey, I’m as nostalgic as the next guy.  So when Steve Jackson Games decided to remake OGRE/GEV into a game in a box the size of a coffee table back in 2011, I thought it was cool.  I wasn’t going to buy it, necessarily, but I thought it looked great.   SJG made an important discovery on that release.. people will spend buckets of cash on nostalgia releases.  Make no bones about it, I like what SJG does, but nothing they have released recently constitutes a radical departure in game design.  One of the reasons we played Car Wars, OGRE/GEV, Illuminati and The Fantasy Trip back in the 80s was that they were new at that time.  Nowadays, there are market alternatives to the SJG classics that, in my opinion, blow the earlier games out of the water, which is to be expected.   That’s the thing; nostalgia releases succeed for a few reasons: 1) the game is way out of print and people are clamoring for a reprint 2) the game is a “classic” w
