Distracted By The Weather And Other Stuff

It has been a busy week and I am now doubting I will make my target for the week. It's all been good stuff but I hope I can get on with it now. Whilst looking for my passport I have found a load of figures I really need to paint right now.For the first time in ages it has been good weather for priming. So I put some effort into getting figures prepped. Although a lovely sunny spring day here it is actually a lot cooler. Just too cool for priming. So I took 6

Armourfast Sherman Firefly

I put together a Sherman Firefly for my 1st RTR, 7th Armoured Division troop yesterday, using the Armourfast kit as the basis but cutting off the sand skirts for a more appropriate appearance. The Armourfast kit is based on the M4 not the M4A4 (Sherman V) but you can't really tell the difference if you're not a tank rivet counter. The sand skirt removal is a bit of a pain but not too difficult, once you've cut away the plastic and scraped it down, requiring only a bit of sanding to get the profile right. The stowage is a combination of resin pieces and white metal parts, along with some spare road wheels from an old Italeri kit. I'm quite pleased with the end result...although I wasn't so sure half way through!

Death from Above

After yesterday’s undercoated German village, today we can do slightly better (although only slightly) with an almost-but-not-quite-finished model. It’s painted but hasn’t had decals applied or been varnished, so it’s a bit shiny (in fact, it was still a little bit sticky when photographed !). This is the Demeter, an 15mm VTOL used by the […]

The Haul Report 174

Loot, loot, loot everywhere!!!Okay, perhaps not as much as last week at all...The coolest stuff being these two new Tshirts from Uniqlo, from their line of celebrating 40 years of the Gundam franchise. From eBay, this booklet came, for fielding the Wrath and Rapture models in Age of Sigmar. But that wasn't the only ebay parcels, as my Tau project got some good boosting.  Two battlesuits with 4 drones arrived, which I'd found for a 10'er.With drones going for premium these days, grabbing another 16 for 18 GBP was a fair deal as well. Finally, Jo gave me this blister for free as he still had it lying around somewhere, thanks matey.Check back next week for more collection stuffsies!

Sharp Practice 2 - Zulu War - Playtest & yet more tweaks.

It's not until you put the toys on the table that you get to iron out some of kinks. The initial worry was the two rounds of fire from the British would stop the Zulu's in their tracks  but when I looked at the casualties at the end of the game that was simply not the case. The first thing came to mind was that there were simply not enough Zulus for 60 points, you really want then several ranks deep to get the period feel.60 Points for each side only gives you a couple of sections for Brits with some Native Horse and a group of NNC, but the Zulus were only around 50 men strong. Not quite enough to give you any more than a single horn. The Skirmish unit on the hill proved to be very useful, but arming them with breach loaders gave them to much firepower, even with a minus one for being poor shots. The moveable deployment point proved to be useful and the Tactical trait which allowed them to launch a surprise move and get close enough to launch a fearsome charge into the NNC who unsurprisingly were forced back

The Key to Lisbon: The Third French Invasion of Portugal, 1810-11

This study details the preparation, planning and execution of the invasion of Portugal in 1810 by the French Armée de Portugal under Marshal Massena, and the defensive measures taken by the British and their Portuguese and Spanish allies. It also covers the practice of all armies involved during this campaign, working from original sources. These sources provide a different interpretation of some key aspects of the campaign to those which are generally accepted. The work focuses on the strategic, operational, and tactical planning undertaken by both sides in preparation for the invasion, and the actual progress of the campaign. A narrative of the battles and sieges, with analysis at the tactical-level, also brings out the differences in planning and intelligence gathering. This particular campaign is important as it has attracted little attention from historians, and was crucial as a turning point in the Peninsular War.This was the last time that Portugal was invaded by the French during the Peninsular War, and
