There are so many good games coming out and he shares a sample of some that stood out to him. It is no secret that we went gaga over War Chest last year. It won a Squirrely last year, that is how gaga we were for it. Well, the same designers have returned and this time, they bring us a theme that I enjoy playing in board games, World War II. Specifically, this game is about the invasion of Normandy and the attempt of the Allies to break the German lines. It comes with a scenario book that helps detail the battles that occurred during that phase of the war. RDTN Episode 173: Top 5 List, Imperial Settlers Roll & Write, Tiny Towns

We are breaking our format a bit in this Episode by doing something we haven’t really done in the past. We list our Top 5 Games that we would not get rid of. However, there is a rule that we have to abide by, it must be on our shelves in order to be in the list. The game can’t be at someone else’s house or we have played and really liked, but never owned a copy. We must have a physical copy of the game in our possession. Some of these are out of print, but some you can easily still get. Vanessa comes back to the mic and she and Marty review the new Imperial Settlers RnW game. She is always a joy to have on the show. After my plays of the game, I will say the mechanic of needing actions and resources something that people may have some challenges with, but after a couple of rolls, they should get it. RDTN Episode 172: Hadara, Pandemic Rapid Response, 51st State Allies, Shadowrun 6th Edition

While I enjoy Imperial Settlers from Portal, I will admit that 51st State is my favorite of the two. Don’t get me wrong, not saying that one is better than the other, but as I stated in the show, I know that 51st is the easier to teach to people because you only have one deck which is why it will edge out Imperial. Once those I am teaching get the core concepts down, then I can introduce Imperial to them with the multiple races and asymmetric play that it brings to the table. But back to Allies, the next expansion to 51st State. Does the expansion Allies provide anything new and different to the game? Yes it does. It brings ways to eliminate the need to convert resources to the tokens needed to put buildings and deals into play. Which for me, seems to speed up the game play. I think it would be best if this is the only expansion you use in the game so you can take advantage of the cards and not have them buried along with the other expansions. You know how some expansions seem to migrate into the base game?

RDTN Episode 171: Star Wars Outer Rim, Nagaraja, and Silver

One of these days, I am going to get us down below one hour again. But it isn’t going to happen for this show. Nope. We have too much to say about the games we got to play recently. First off is Silver from Bezier Games. Sure you have heard it from other groups, but we wanted to give you our take on this simple card game that is very similar to Golf. But what is going to set it apart from Golf are the card actions that you can do and the action of replacing two or more of the same cards with a single card. The simple game of Golf is now full of interaction, strategy, and tension. This is one of those you might need to just keep in your game bag so you have something quick to play while waiting on people or to finish the night with. The problem might be that people will keep asking to play one more time. Very enjoyable. Next is FFG’s Star Wars: Outer Rim. This required us to bring in the Scurry to discuss and dissect this game. RDTN Episode 170: Robinson Crusoe Mystery Tales, Res Arcana, Space Base Expansion, Wacky Races, Superfriends

Hope everyone has recovered from the onslaught of Avengers Endgame and Game of Thrones battles and ready to get back to board gaming. We are and this episode puts five games on the table for discussion and two Kickstarters we want to bring to your attention. Res Arcana is one of those games that you might pass by, but it is one you should give a try if you enjoyed the mechanics that are in Century Spice Road. The premise is straight forward in that you must collect resources that allow you to purchase cards that let you convert those resources into other resources that you can then eventually get victory points. But unlike Century or other games like this, there are unique mechanics in impacting other players, player powers, and cards that can help adjust your strategy during the game. RDTN Episode 168: Lord of the Rings: Journeys in Middle-Earth, Evolution, Oceans, Castle of Burgundy Dice Game

Marty survived Robb Con and comes back with a report on his play of Wingspan and Tsukuyumi. He also escaped the cabin long enough to get in some disc golf, still a favorite recreational sport at RDTN. Man, hope to throw some plastic now that spring is here. Then we got to play a very good implementation of the classic game Castles of Burgundy as a roll and write. Plays fast and has some very good challenging decisions to make as you mark the roll on your sheet. Definitely a keeper in our collection of roll and writes. It must also be a throwback episode because Marty got to play Evolution for the first time, which is one of my favorite games. But the reason we got it to the table was because we were able to try out the Evolution app that was release recently on Steam and then, I got to try Oceans, the next evolution of games by North Star Games. RDTN Episode 167: Call to Adventure, Crisis, Roll For The Galaxy:Rivalry, Camel Up, Istanbul App

We are jammed full of game discussions in this episode. We revisit Camel Up Second Edition with a surprise guest. We talk about a new favorite game of Marty’s Crisis. Then we break down a new quick filler called Village Pillage that Nate Bivins brought to the table. But that is the only surprise, Marty has some special guests on to talk about the expansion for Roll for the Galaxy Rivalry. And that is not all. We play the beautiful game Call to Adventure. RDTN Episode 164: Raccoon Tycoon, Beta Colony, Terror Below

Sorry for the back to back long episodes. However, we have a good reason. First, Sara Erickson from Renegade Game Studios dropped by and wanted to tell us about Mike Elliot’s new game, Terror Below, that is currently on Kickstarter. Don’t worry, it is funded but if you have any doubts on if you are backing or have questions, maybe Sara will have the answers you seek. She also was subjected to a Rank’em, something we haven’t had the opportunity to do in awhile. Next comes to fairly lengthy discussion about two games that we go to the table. Raccoon Tycoon from Forbidden Games is a very enjoyable commodities game that is fast to teach and play. We also are finding that the various strategies work well so no set winning one and anytime we have an hour to get a game in, it is a good bet we will reach for it. We have guests on for this show and we get chatty with one guest. He is such a great friend to the show and it is hard keeping it short. Stephen Buonocore does a deep dive with us on what it takes for a game to get noticed in today’s market and have staying power. Think about it. We are back from our break and ready to tackle another year of board gaming podcasting. Or as a listener pointed out to us, making background noise. Master of Wills by Stormcrest Games is a deck building card game that has a twist on winning the game. Your score is determined at the end of the eighth round based on the number of citizens you have on your side of the board. When you pick a Citizen card at the start of your turn, they will have abilities on them that will impact the game by allowing you to play special cards from your faction deck that you built prior to the start. RDTN Episode 161: Pandemic-Fall of Rome, Black Orchestra, Scorpius Freighter

Time for a new year and we are trying to get things planned, at least for the first quarter. But to get the New Year started off right, we bring you three game discussions and a discussion about doughnuts. One game we got to play was the new one from AEG called Scorpius Freighter. What makes this game different is the three action tracks. You have to advance around them to get things done, but each track is a game timer and when one of the tracks meets the requirement for game end, it is done. Very interesting mechanic and one making us wonder how we could have done it different. It is also one of those games that it ends and you just don’t believe you have enough time to get it all done. You must be efficient, or so it seems. Marty got to play the new Pandemic: Fall of Rome and I got in Black Orchestra. RDTN Episode 160: Fireball Island, Victorian Masterminds, Blackstone Fortress

It has been six years since we started this podcast and there is no stopping us now. We are having such a good time, we are having a ball and so we aren’t going to stop now. And to celebrate the 6th year, we are giving stuff away because based on how Marty assembles a leaf bagger for his mower, this could have been it. He survived and shared his exploits in this episode. RDTN Episode 158: Arkham Horror, Shadows:Amsterdam, Hail Hydra

The annual BooBQ event at Marty’s happened and we got not only our feedbags on, but we also got some gaming on. We were able to play the new edition of Arkham Horror. If you have never have played Arkham, recommend that you do, but find someone that knows how to play to teach you and doesn’t add house rules. The rules are tough to get through the first time, but worth the reward. The game can be really intense at times, especially when things might hinge on the balance of a dice roll here and there. Overall, a great gaming experience and a must have in the coop collection. We also got to play Shadows: Amsterdam, which was excited to play after seeing it at Gen Con. I really enjoy Mysterium and Codenames and, in my opinion, this is a smash-up of both games. If you enjoy the real-time mechanic in a board game, then you need to try this game when it comes out. RDTN Episode 157: Calimala, Architects of the West World, Ascension Delirium

Episode 157 does not have a guest, but all is not lost. We actually get down to some board games. That is right, what an idea for a board gaming podcast. First, we have the a game picked up for publishing in the USA by Stronghold called Calimala. It is not to be confused with the word that means squid in Italian as some kept saying noat the game table. This was released in 2017 and was a big hit at Essen, so we heard cause we weren’t there. The game is designed by Fabio Lopiano, which was his first game, and who also designed Ragusa that will be out next year. RDTN Episode 153: Cryptid, Taj Mahal, and Gizmos with special guest, David Waybright

While on vacation, Marty was able to find someone who obviously had nothing to do and filled in for me. David Waybright, from Man vs Meeple, was kind enough to take on the challenge of being grumpy. He failed, but that is okay. We still really appreciate the effort. David and Marty talk about Tiny Epic Mechs that is on Kickstarter now and has already blown past $300k, no chance of this not funding at $15,000. David and Marty also spend time and no telling how many takes doing a 5 Minute Initiative on Cryptid from Osprey Games. Since I haven’t played it, I am interested in their thoughts on it and whether or not I will be taught by Marty or if this is one I will learn on my own.
