Weekly Chronicle 2019 #31 (GenCon Recap)

GenCon 2019  has come and gone now, and yesterday was a good time, but before we get more into that, just a quick usual weekly recap.Gaming was pretty decent last week with 3 games of X-Wing played, we are preparing for the NOVA Open Grand Championship at the end of the month, so we are trying different lists until we find one that we like.  There will be a lot more X-Wing the rest of the month as I am still undecided on my list.  BMG games will have to take a back seat until we get back from NOVA, we may and try to squeeze in one though for the month.Painting was also really good last week, I was able to complete another 6 models for Batman Miniature Game, though I do not have any more models currently prepped and ready to go so it may be a bit before I post anymore BMG models, which is OK since I have two Guild Ball Rookie models I need to also get completed or NOVA Open and they will be next in my Queue.Games Played: 3Models Completed: 6So now onto GenCon 2019.The day started pretty early fo

Battle Report: Arena Rex 3/25/2019 Ludus Magnus vs Legio XIII (3v3)

Wow, I cannot believe it has been three months since our last game of Arena Rex, and the first game of 2019, I do miss the quickness of the game play, I may have to remember that as I am shopping the aisle of the vendor hall at AdeptiCon this week.We played the scenario "Duellum" which we played once before back in October of 2018.Scenario: DuellumTwo Gladiators take center stage while their cohorts jockey for position and favor.  The grand melee begins when one of the duelists falls.Special Rules: Each player secretly selects one gladiator from their cohort to take part in the duel.  Dueling models may not voluntarily leave the duel zone.  No other models may enter the duel zone until one of the dueling gladiators is defeated or pushed completely outside of the zone.  Dueling models must be activated if they are Ready.Deployment: A 5" diameter ring is placed at the center of the arena, this is the duel zone.  The dueling gladiators are deployed in base contact with one

Happy New Year! What's in store for 2019

Happy New Year 2019!One of my favorite posts of the year where I lay out my plans for 2019 and try to stick to them without swaying too far.  Last year I kept it a bit realistic and I was happy with my outcome.  With the additions of a few games in 2018, 2019 may be a bit more of a full plate for me.As with last year, my plan for painting will continue to break down my queue in calendar quarters, I think this worked very well for me and made my queue a bit more manageable. As of now, these are the games that are of interest for 2019, in alphabetical order.Arena RexPainting Goal:  I still have quite a few models in my backlog for Arena Rex (11).  I honestly feel it may be a doable goal to have these all completed, as long as I do not add anymore to the backlog.  I think as long as I stick to the two Ludus' that I have, this goal should be completed (especially if one the games way down below takes a back burner).  Once these get completed (maybe by GenCon in August) then I may add

2018 Year in Review

There are two blog posts that I enjoy writing the most each year, the first one is my "What's in store for" (next year), and the second one is my "Year in Review".2018 started with a "What's in store for 2018" so we will use that post as basis for our year in review.Guild Ball2018Painting Goal:  This is a tough one.  I would love to say to be able to complete every Guild Ball model that I have so that all Guilds are completed.  It is doable since I currently probably have around 40 models left to complete.  I have the new six for both the Farmer's and Blacksmith's, the second six for the Brewer's and the remaining are for my Mortician's and Union.  I do have a few one off's left (Smoke and Lucky) and I am wrapping up Skatha for my son's Hunter's Guild.  I think realistically I will shoot to complete the Farmer's, Blacksmith's and Brewer's (along with the few one off's).  This will give me some room for some of the new Minor Guilds that will be released in 2018.Gaming Goal:&n

Weekly Chronicle 2018 #52

Battle Report: Arena Rex 12/28/2018 Ludus Magnus vs Legio XIII

It has been a pretty long while since our last game of Arena Rex, so instead of a rematch of Guild Ball yesterday, I decided to get the arena ready for battle.I also decided to try a new scenario 'Geminae' that we have never played before.Scenario: GeminaeRival cohorts vie for control of the hart of the arena and the love of the crowd.Special Rules: Place 2 dual zones in the arena (5" diameter).Deployment: Cohorts deploy in base contact with their controlling player's arena edge.Cohorts: Both players bring cohorts of equal value.Restrictions: NoneVictory Conditions: The first player to control both duel zones is the victor.  The last player with models remaining in the arena is the victor, otherwise. The arena setup. The scenario conditions for a win made this game play very fast.  Before anyone was killed, my Ludus Magnus had both duel zones controlled.  Ludus Magnus controlling both dual zones.Since no gladiator was slain yet, we decided to continue on with th

Arena Rex: Single Sided Cards

It has been quite of a bit of time since I last posted anything on Arena Rex or actually played a game, but last night I was thinking about the cards for Arena Rex.  I love using physical cards for games, it is much easier to see all the stats/rules of a player if it is right in front you.  One problem with the Arena Rex cards is, the rule description for that player is on the back of the card, so unless you have all your players memorized (which I do not), you are always flipping the card front to back.On the Arena Rex website, they actually place each player's card as a singe sided image, so it got me thinking to how I printed my Guild Ball cards by sending them to Walgreen's and printed out on 4x6 glossy paper.  This idea came to me at 6:00 AM this morning, so while my wife was still working there overnight, I uploaded all my images to Walgreen's and had them printed for her to bring home with her.I did not print all the factions, just the my son and I are currently playing (Ludus Magnus and

Weekly Chronicle 2018 #49

The end of the year is approaching and I am looking forward to the new year and working on my list of expectations for 2019 (my annual New Year's Day post).  We still have a few more weeks left in 2018 and I am 7 Painting Points shy of beating last year's mark of 320 Points.  Looks like I better hurry up and get some models ready for the painting table.  It is not like I do not have any models in my Painting Queue Backlog, but some of the items I am saving for 2019 (mainly tackling the Minor Guilds for Guild Ball), but I thought of some models yesterday afternoon that should just put me past last year's mark.Back onto my recap of week #49.Painting: Last week only 1 model was completed with 'Veteran Hearne' for my son's Hunter's Guild Ball team, I am glad he got completed and that was the last model for the Guild.  Nothing else was completed, but a few models did get ready for this week.Gaming:  Last week did not see many Battle Reports, on Monday night and yesterday my son and i got i

Daily Chronicle: Black Friday Local Goodies

Besides doing online shopping this past Black Friday, my son and I headed to Chicago to visit my father's cemetery.  On the way back we decided to stop at Grognard Games in Schaumburg, IL and Heroes Haven in Michigan City, IN.Our first stop on the way back home was Grognard Games, this was actually our first time visiting the store.  We had meant stop in one time during AdeptiCon but never made it out.  I knew the owner Todd back from when he owned Crooked Hat Games 2002-2005 and I heard good things about his new store and wanted to check it out.  The size was decent for a gaming store, it was not huge, but it still had plenty of tables for miniature and card games and then the right 1/3 of the space was the actual store.  It was sad not to see any Privateer Press items, but he had the usual Games Workshop and a few niche games like Guild Ball, Arena Rex and Batman Miniature Game items.  Grognard was actually doing a Black Friday sale so I was hoping to find something.  Ther

Daily Chronicle: AdeptiCon 2019 Event Schedule Preview

One of the benefits of moving back to the Midwest a few years ago was the ability to drive to AdeptiCon each year, I've been to AdeptiCon in the beginning, a few events in the middle and 2019 will mark 3 years in a row again for me.AdeptiCon is not until March 27th-31st, but every November before, registration for the events opens with as much information they can provide for the event (some other organizers need to take note...WMW).  Well this year is no different and registration will open this Sunday November 19th.  The good people who run AdeptiCon also give us a sneak peek at the list of events at least a week beforehand and this past weekend the site went live with the majority of their events.  You can click HERE for the event preview. The day the preview site goes live is a happy day for most of us as we can start planning our AdetiCon weekend, sometimes there is a little disappointment if the events you want to play in overlap with each. For AdeptiCon 2019, the list of events I was think

Weekly Chronicle #45 2018

This past week was a complete opposite of my previous week.  Previously I painted 5 models and played 1 game, and this past week it was painting 1 model and playing 5 games.  I wish I would have painted more, but I knew I was getting ready for my first Guild Ball tournament and I did not want to leave anything unfinished on the painting table.  What I did complete last week was 'Zarola' for the Hunter's Guild.Currently I have 2 models up in my Painting Queue with plenty in my backlog.  A lot of the times I will re-arrange my queue based on what I feel like painting, but I think I really need to get these next 2 models completed.  I have 'Hearth' for the Blacksmith's Guild and 'Veteran Hearne' for the Hunter's Guild listed as next.  If I complete these 2 models, then both of these Guilds will be fully completed, and that is a nice feeling of accomplishment.  Then I need to think about what will be next, part of me is thinking the Falconer's Guild (starting with the 2 models t

Battle Report: Arena Rex 10/25/2018 Ludus Magnus vs Legio XIII (3v3)

It has been 2 weeks since our last game of Arena Rex (mainly getting in some Guild Ball practice) but last night my son and I threw down for a quick 3v3 game.  Now that I ha few more models assembled than the original 3 from the starter set, it may for a more interesting game. The ArenaLudus Magnus:MiconSeptimusOtho MentulusLegio XIII:GaiusAquilaValenFor a little added variety and fun, I decided to place a Living Hazard in the Arena, 'Leo'.  Unfortunately though 'Leo' did not see any action.  I was setup to take advantage of him with 'Micon', but 'Micon' saw 'Valen' sitting right next to the Pit so he changed directions and engaged 'Valen' and successfully pushing him into the Pit, it was a quick start for my Ludus Magnus.  'Micon' then did work on 'Aquila' and he ended up in the Pit.  Now it was a 3 on 1 battle and 'Gaius' could not hold his own, but manged to take out 'Micon'.  This time it was 'Otho Mentulus' that was able to get the push on 'Gaius' into the Pits and the Ludus

Battle Report: Arena Rex 10/11/2018 Ludus Magnus vs Legio XIII

Played another 5v5 game of Arena Rex last night and this time I did not play with 'Nero', instead yesterday I quickly assembled 'Otho Mentulus' for my Ludus Magnus to make it a little bit more fair against my son.We also played a new scenario called 'Duellum' where we both had to start with a gladiator in a 5" duel zone in the center of the arena.  No one else could enter the duel zone until one of the gladiators was killed or pushed out of the arena.  In the center of the arena, it was 'Septimus' for the Ludus Magnus and 'Aquila' for Legio XIII.'Septimus' did quick work of pushing 'Aquila' out of the duel zone, but then he met his fate being pushed in a pit.  The same fate fell for 'Otho' who did not do much in this game.  Just about right from the start I was already down 2 gladiators.  The Ludus Magnus started to make comeback with the help of 'Micon' pushing and throwing Legio models into the pits, but my final 2 gladiators could not get me the victory.  It was a loss for the

Weekly Chronicle #39 2018

Well we are now into the month of October and the final quarter for my Painting Queue.  My 3rd quarter was not as good as my 1st, but much much better than my 2nd quarter.  I am out on vacation this week so not much will get done model wise nor gaming, but when I get back and I need to take a look at my Painting Queue Backlog and move some items over to the Queue. When I get back from vacation, Warmachine Weekend will be less than a month away, and I need to decide if my son and I will still be attending.  The lack of information from the organizers is really disheartening and the cost of a new dryer for the household tapped into the slush funds.  If I decide that we are still attending WMW, I need to take a look at my models and see what needs to be completed, or I may be alright with what I already have (I'll need to check with my son too in case he needs any Cygnar completed). For last week, I was able to complete another 10 models of 'Warriors of the Dead' (half way done with my Dead of

Battle Report: Arena Rex 9/27/2018 Ludus Magnus vs Legio XIII

I was able to get in another 5v5 game of Arena Rex last night with 'Nero' once again in my lineup and it was another win for my Ludus Magnus.  I was actually a little shocked last night that 'Micon' finally pulled his weight and was able to Push 3 Legio XIII models into the Pits before he fell to his death.  'Nero' was again the last of my models surviving.I think next time we may try a 4v4 and I will remove 'Nero' from my lineup to keep it a little more fair until  I can get a few more models assembled, playing against a Titan can be pretty rough, but it does feel pretty nice getting in some wins.Scenario: MunusA classic match evolved from funeral traditions, the Munus is a standard combat between equally matched cohorts.Deployment: Cohorts deploy in base contact with their controlling player’s arena edge.Cohorts: Both players bring cohorts of equal value.Restrictions: NoneVictory Conditions: The last player with models remaining in the arena is the victor.
