Beyond the Gates of Antares
While trying to avoid painting my Blood Bowl Elves I decided to assemble and paint some more Battle Suits for my Ghar Rebel army. I started doing them and then pulled out some older models and realized that these look entirely different from the models I painted previously. Luckily I seem to have no consistent... The starter set for Beyond the Gates of Antares by Warlord GamesI took on a rare commission and painted up a starter kit of Warlord Games' new(ish?) science fiction game, Beyond the Gates of Antares. Life has been a little crazy and it took me longer than anticipated, but I'm happy with the results. It also brings the total of models that I've painted this year to 190.One side is the determined forces of the Concord Strike group and their legion of drone assistants. The other side is brutal Algoryians, who I assume are still sore about the 2000 US Presidential election. I'm also continuing some work on forces for my Horus Heresy army. I should have some more to share real soon.Cheers!
As part of my Isorian army for Beyond the Gates of Antares I painted up a unit of 6 Targeting Drones. I wanted to make sure that I took a bit of time on them as they are a small unit and the globes on the top of the models would look good with a bit of blending. Targeting Drones Unlike the rest of the Isorian army thee models have had fully painted highlights and there isn’t any drybrushing on them. Not that the models would really do well with drybrushing. They painted up quite quickly even with the additional attention to detail. Now I just need to try them out in a game and see how well they do.
The, lucky, folks in the UK were recently attending an Antares Game Day but on by Warlord Games. Some of the rules for that event (also available in the event Player Pack PDF) may be working their way into the game. There are some possible changes to the SV values of Assault and Battle suits but I think that the most critical one is a change to the Support Teams. Ghar Rebel Weapon Teams must be attached to Black Guard Infantry squads and cannot appear as individual squads. Those teams will be available as a 25 point option and can have their weapons upgraded. This seems like a fairly minor change but it has one significant implication in that it will change the composition of Tactical units in the army. In one of my 1250 point Ghar Rebel army lists I have two Support Teams as Tactical Choice. Once I get my Mag Cannon Support Team painted I would probably have three Support Teams in a list. Without those I will need to replace those teams with either Black Guard, Rebel Squads or more Command teams. Without the
I was at an event this morning and while I was there I took out all of my painted Beyond the Gates of Antares models and took some photos. Always nice to see them all out at once. One day I may use the all in a single game. Without adding any options I have 1210 points of Ghar Rebels and close to 1600 points of Isorians. Not pictured is an Isorian Targeting Shard that I have finished painting but not based.
Well they are no 100% finished, I still have to put some tufts on the bases, but these will soon be ready for the gaming table. The Attack Scutters are a good, cheap source of Scourer Cannons and fit into a list where a Battle Squad might be too many points. They also look neat. The Assault Squad is a much needed addition to the army since my regular opponent will be adding at least one Concord Krask Assault team to his army. I also suspect that these things can crack open something like a Combat Drone quite easily. The Light Drones were purchased for the Drone Commander since it looks really neat with lots of drones and probes. I started to paint the Drone Commander a while ago but never got it finished. This might be the impetus I need to get it finished. I am not sure what I will be painting next. I have some Epic terrain that I need to finish and I am also contemplating painting a Freeborn force.
Recently Warlord Games had a warehouse clearance sale and I picked up a Ghar Bomber sprue and some Assault Suits. Sadly when they were packed instead of 1 Bomber sprue and 3 Assault sprues I got sent 3 Bomber sprues and 1 Assault sprue. I have no real use for three Bombers so I decided to do a quick bit of work and create a Bomber with two Disruptor cannons. Not exactly an earth-shattering bit of conversion work but it still looks nice.
Jeremy and I met up at The Sentry Box today for a 1000 point game of Beyond the Gates of Antares. He had his Concord force, with his newly completed Combat Drone, and I brought an Isorian army that focused on a Tsan Ra assault force. Originally I was going to bring my Ghar Rebel troops and try out my new Assault Squad. Brett and I played a game some time ago and I was really impressed by how dangerous the Ghar Assault Squad was. Interestingly they charged a unit of Phase Troopers and did nothing in the first round of combat but then ripped them apart in the second. Instead I used I an old Isorian army list that I stumbled upon which has a five model unit of Tsan Ra and a transport drone. I’ve been waiting a long time to get that transport into a game. We decided to play the Recover at All Costs scenario from the main rulebook. Both of us had the same number of activations including a single MOD unit. Jeremy had three C3 Strike Squads, an X Launcher, Command Squad, Plasma Cannon and a Combat Drone. I had
As the day of the Boot Camp draws nearer I am working on more miniatures to add to my Ghar Rebel and Isorian armies. Just a few more highlights to do and then some weathering. I will need to pick up some Astrogranite Debris to finish off the bases for the Ghar Rebel models.
A bit of work this weekend and I have expanded my Antares forces. Not sparkling quality but certainly done and ready to get onto the table. Next on the table are a unit of Ghar Assault Suits, a unit of Attack Scutters and two light Plasma Drones. Hopefully I’ll have those done by the end of the week. I did a quick army list with my Isorian and Ghar Rebel minis and was able to make a 1500 point army list with my Isorians but even with the mass of Ghar Rebel minis I have I was barely able to make a 1250 point force. I may need to build some more Battle Suit units or some more of the larger Ghar vehicle units to allow me to build a 1500 point army.
So in terms of my painting output it has been a quiet few weeks. One of the twins was home from school recovering from a tonsillectomy and that flowed right into their week-long Spring Break. So its only been in the last few days that I have been getting back to the painting table. I am going to be running a Boot Camp event in a few weeks and I am using that as the impetus to paint up some more models. The Medium Drone has been on my table for a while and since I am doing some other Isorian figures I decided to finish this off. The new models are the Isorian Biker unit. They are going to be an interesting addition to the army as it isn’t exactly fast moving, especially if I add the Tsan Ra, so having a unit that can rush into the enemy rear and attack is going to be interesting. Also getting some paint is the Ghar Rebel Leader in Battle Suit. The Ghar Rebel army needs an additional command choice. The Ghar Rebel Command unit is really not very good at being a commander since the unit has such a l
So I am not entirely sure why I keep painting these Virai models. I don’t really have any plans for an army of them but I just like the look of them. So here is the Secondary Instance and its two bodyguard drones. For some reason the Secondary Instance isn’t as dynamic a model as the Tertiary Instance. It might be a posing problem but it strikes me that if this is a more important model than the Tertiary Instance that it should be a more impressive figure. I like how these turned out and like the weathering effects. Sadly I painted these with a brighter yellow than the first model. I am not sure if I need to add another layer of yellow and highlights to the first model or just accept the difference in shade.
Jeremy was over today with 1000pts of Concord minis to play against my Isorians. I decided to build a scenario based on the terrain I had on hand. I put some crystals and rock formations in the middle of the table to represent an outburst of a crystalline energy form that caused an explosion wrecking the surrounding territory. Scientists put down energy dampening and control facilities to contain it and now Concord and Isorian forces are moving onto the location to take control of it and use the energy. There are four objectives around the central section of the table which represent each control facility. The game runs six turns and whomever controls the most objectives will gain control of the energy and win the game. There are triangular section at each corner of the table 12″ in width and height. Each side is able to deploy half their force (fractions rounded down) and then bring the rest on starting with the second turn as per the standard rules. Deployment is from the 12″ edges of the initia
So after a bit of work I am almost finished the Mahran Vesh combat drone. It took a bit longer than I intended because I had to drill and base all of the parts onto brass pins. Even though I washed the parts the oil from my hands was taking the primer and paint from the models. I will need to investigate a better solution for future. It turned out to be a lot more colourful than I originally intended but I just went where the model and the colours sent me. I did the glows on the energy pods differently this time and I am happier with how they look so I will be doing this method going forward.
Today was the first day out with the core of my Isorian army for Beyond the Gates of Antares. Local Concord enthusiast Jeremy was out to give my 750 points of Isorians a good test. Aside from the Tsan Ra Torus squad the army was quite similar to the Concord force opposing it. Two Phase Squads, a Command Squad, a Support team with X Launcher and a Drone with a PLS. Jermey had a similar force except that he replaced the Drone with a Plasma Cannon support team and the Tsan Ra with a third C3 team. We decided to play scenario 4, Hold the Line, and Jermey chose the option of being the defender. We moved some of the terrain around so that most of the area terrain was on my edge and Jeremy had more buildings to defend as objectives. He put his Plasma Cannon and X launcher teams in buildings and on Ambush and also put his Command Team hidden behind the X Launcher team. I have been playing Ghar Rebels since I first got into Antares and so 750 points of Isorians was fewer activations than I was used to as we
