Complete Force

Phoenix Clan for Dragon Rampant

Hot on the tails of the Lion Rampant Clan Warband for Dragon Rampant, I finished up a small force of a Legend of the Five Rings Phoenix Clan for Dragon Rampant. This was mostly a re-basing operations - though I did paint up two new minis to make units the right number.I have to admit, I have very little idea about the actual make up of the armies of Rokugan. I never played Clan War (the miniatures game these were originally made for), I never really played Legends of the Five Rings (the Collectible Card Game), and, while I HAVE a pile of reference books for various editions of the role-playing game, I've read very few of them and only briefly ran a game of Savage Worlds lonely based on what little I knew about the setting. So these armies are based solely on the little I know about the different clans and what few miniatures I have available.I think a lot of these miniatures are 20 years old now. I picked up the ones I have 8-9 years ago. I don't think they're getting any easier to come by, so I probably won'

Epic Space Marines for Apocalypse

Here are the Marines I have (painted, so far...) organized for use in the current version of Warhammer 40,000: Apocalypse!  The entire force (so far!)As with the Eldar, these were previously organized for Future War Commander - where an element is an element and the number of figures on each stand wasn't really important, so I wasn't really fussed about having the correct number of itty-bitty warriors on each stand. Consequently, a number of these elements have less than the basic number of models that should be on a stand - in these cases I assume that it represents the basic/minimum number that would be in a squad - for example,  you can field Terminators in squads of five or ten, my stands have only three on each of them (because I only had a handful of them and I wanted more than just two squads (plus a few spares left over) and needed something I could use as a CO/HQ element - so I did four stands of three plus a smaller stand of just one - which would represent the HQ element.Marine Vangu

Asuryani Force for Epic Apocalypse

I was going to include this in my previous painting update post, but it ended up being so much that I felt it deserved a whole post of its own.I've been toying with the idea of using the new Warhammer 40,000: Apocalypse rules with my "Epic Scale" 40K stuff. Recently I was looking at what I had and took stock and tried to form them into detachments to see how big of a game (in terms of number of units and power level - the minis are really very small...) I could put on the table and what, if anything I'd need to paint to play reasonable sized battle. I found for both Eldar and Space Marines I had in the neighbourhood of 300-400 Power Level. I may paint up a few more items for both forces before I actually get these on the table... I'm shooting for about 400 Power Level on each side.To start with... The EldarASURYANI FORCE for EPIC APOCALYPSEThe entire force (so far!). This comes to about 400 Power LevelThese were previously organized for Future War Commander - where an element is an element and the number of f

Spyrers

I finished up some Spyrers this week. It seemed like a fun idea to get them. Spryers are, generally, high-born nobles - residents of The Spires - that done Spyrer rigs to go hunting down in the Underhive. Sometimes it's youths, going to "prove themselves". Other times they are the devoted servants of the Spyre Lords, sent down to retrieve or take out something or someone - as was the case in Blood Royale (the first Kal Jericho novel by Will McDermott and Gordon Rennie). In fact I blame that book for inspiring me to get these... The seemed so bad ass...There aren't rules for playing Spyrers in the current Necromunda Underhive (2017) rules (well... not YET!). But I thought I could come up with some stats/special rules for them and use them as the focus of a scenario ("Spyrers have come down hunting for sport - lets show them that they shouldn't MESS with Underhivers" sort of thing...).Of course then I got them and... I blanked... had no idea how to paint them. Wasn't loving samples I found online... s

Adeptus Arbites

Last spring I painted up a bunch of old I-Kore Void figures and called them "Adeptus Arbites". In truth, they would be better stand-ins for Local Enforcers... The Adeptus Arbites, I have since figured out, are more like a "Federal" police force - like the FBI in the United States or the RCMP in Canada (except that the RCMP are also detailed to do local law enforcement in large parts of rural Canada...), whereas Enforcers are more like local/municipal police forces.I imagine the Adeptus Arbites, though there certainly would be some posted on Necromunda, would give very little care for anything going on in the Underhive - they would be keeping their eye on Lord Helmawr and the big movers and shakers in the upper hive or spire that might be committing Imperial crimes... I guess they might show up in the Underhive to chase down a particularly nasty criminal that's tried to elude Imperial justice by escaping downhive.Adeptus Arbites! Most of these are old metal models from Citadel Miniatures on newer Sector Imperi

Delaque Gangers

I finally finished up the Delaque Leader, so I thought I would post pics of the entire gang... I do have three more to do, but all three require some converting, and it may be some time before I get to them, so...The One-Eyed Red SnakesThe entire gang, so far...All are old school Necromunda metal figures from Citadel Miniatures.Artifex is the Leader of the gang. Artifex is a master dealer in information and prohibited substances (mainly obscure and spook - which he sells as red and blue pills). House Cawdor Gangers

and back to Necromunda...I finished up a Cawdor gang for Necromunda this week...The New MinisWell, newly painted... these are old Citadel metal minis for Necromunda. The more recent ones are all plastic now - and have quite different armaments! Luckily there are still rules for all (well, MOST) of these armaments - or something "close enough" that I should be able to do then. The whole Gang (with the six others I previously painted). Almost enough for TWO Gangs... I briefly considered it, but the decided, since I only have one Heavy, I'd probably best just keep them all together. If ever I got a handful more (Including another Heavy) I might split them up - repaint the fringes of their tabards different colours to identify which gang is which.House Cawdor is the stronghold of the Cult of Redemption on Necromunda. I didn't want to just do these guys in red and/or purple to match the Redemptionists... Somehow I came up with green...!?The leader of the gang; Willem Campbell - a dour firebrand who leads from the f

Further Mistakes Were (NOT!) Made

Gentle Readers (and other people that somehow ended up here...?), I do try to not live down to the very worst stereotypes about gamers... I HAVE been trying to rein in the spending and get stuff done... deplete the lead mountain, rather than adding to it.  I have to admit, I have gone a little overboard in the last couple months - with all the Necromunda stuff I picked up... and then the Apocalypse stuff.... and a couple things FOR Apocalypse detachments... And then I told myself, that was IT - no more spending for the rest of the year. Maybe even the next couple years! Sweet Mother of Zeus, I have ENOUGH to paint!!So, when I was approached by a local gamer that was trying to get rid of his Imperial Guard Collection, I actually said "No, thanks, I've got enough"...But then I was thinking of a friend of mine that I thought might be interested and so a couple days later I asked for details... What did the seller have...? what did he want for them..? I am, however, a sucker for a good deal... And, friends,

Eldar Super Heavy Detachment - Tempest/Scorpion Heavy Grav-Tanks

I finished the last of my Tempest Heavy Grav-Tanks last night - just in time for this afternoon's game of Apocalypse against Other Tim.A complete Super Heavy Detachment of Tempest Heavy Grav-Tanks (being used as Scorpions). The models are old Armorcast models, which I picked up off of eBay over the last year. The latest addition.I've decided to give each a name as it seems that's an aeldari thing to do... Like the names of their Titans, their names are rather long. The short version of this tanks name is "T'chylmylwynbil". The literal translation of the long name is "The Five-Legged Beast That Stalks Its Prey by Night, Which Lasts Forever"Oh, those Eldar...I have come up with names for the others as well....This one is "Dilytichylmywil"  (again, the shorter version - or nick name). The full translation is "Flowering Plant with Excessively Large Sex Organs That Makes the Mon-Kee Blush, But is Very Sustaining and Tastes Good in Soup".I assure you it's much more poetic (and makes more sense) in it's ori

Thaestalyrdaes Craftworld

Keira's Asuryani force has been growing a lot lately (especially with the push to get a few units completed for the Strange Bedfellows 40K Team tournament) and I've been meaning to get a picture of the complete force so far...This represents a War Host of the Thaestalyrdaes Craftworld (using Biel-Tan rules)What she has here is:HQFarseerAutarchJain ZarAvatar of KhaineTroops10 Dire Avengers10 Rangers30 Guardian DefendersElite20 Howling Banshees5 WraithbladesFast Attack6 Swooping HawksHeavy Support1 Wraith LordLord of War1 WraithknightWith the exception of the two units of Guardians I recently painted while experimenting with Contrast paints, there were all entirely painted by Keira. This force could probably be fielded as three detachments - An Auxiliary Super Heavy Detachment (the Wraithknight), a Vanguard Detachment (Jain Zar leading all the Howling Banshees split into three units) and a Battalion Detachment (with all the rest).Dammit.... I just realized I'm missing a mini from this picture - she has a warlock

Drukhari Wych Cult

A little over a year ago, Amanda and I bought a used (mostly assembled, but entirely unpainted) Dukhari force of a local dude that wanted to offload them. From this I did paint up a Kill Team for her to use last fall, but very little movement had been made since then... Until now...This weekend was the Strange Bedfellows 40K Team Tournament, and we decided to enter a FAMILY team. Unfortunately, Amanda was away in the U.S. at a Yoga thing, but she said it would be okay for Finnegan to make use of her Drukhari so we could field an all Aeldari team. (If she hadn't been away, it might have been me and Keira with Asuryani, Amanda with the Drukhari and Finnegan with his ORKS!!). Instead we teamed up with our friend Other Tim and his Alaitoc Asuryani.Over the last six weeks I cranked out this entire 1000 point Drukhari force. I've previously posted the Reavers and Hellions (and Lelith Hespirax, even though she wasn't needed for the force). Here, for the first time, is the ENTIRE 1000 point Drukhari force - including

Grey Knight Commanders (and other stuff)

Happy Holidaze to all, and, for those that celebrate it, a very merry Christmas to you all.Over the weekend I managed to finish up three more Grey Knights - all command elements. From left to right a Brotherhood Champion, a Brother Captain, and a Justicar.Brother Champion Tyson - a Headquarters element for the Grey Knights (also a commander option for Kill Team). I put him on a slightly larger base to make him stand out from the others a bit. Unfortunately I two other metal Grey Knight Strike Squads off eBay and both include this figure as the squad's Justicar... Ah, well... They'll go on smaller bases...Brother Captain Alan - in Terminator Armour. A second Headquarters element for the Grey Knights. Once I have the two other Strike Squads painted I'll be able to field these as an allied "Battalion" Detachment. I have no real desire to add any more to this force.I don't know... I guess if some one GAVE me a couple of Land Raiders or I happened upon some of those old school metal Grey Knight Terminators...Justic

Tigris Viridi - Warhound Scout Titan

A second, old Armorcast Warhound Titan arrived in the mail for me a week and a half ago. It's really all I've been working on since. By this past weekend I thought I'd settled on colours and had most of the green and purple painted...Then I decided the green was too dark after all...Not nearly enough contrast -and looked positively dull next to Pardus Purpura...And so I started again with MORE test bits and settled on a lighter colourAnd started all over again... mostly...I have to say I'm much happier with the lighter colour now.So this is Tigris Viridi. Commanded by Princeps Mozzer. The crew is rounded out by two Moderati; Moderati Joyce (Steersman) and Moderati Marr (Sensors, Communications, Weapons) and two Tech Priests Ro-Urk350 and Pom-Fret681.Tigris Viridi joins it's partner, Pardus Purpura in the Eritque Arcus Maniple of Legio Amare Feles.Pardus Purpura is commanded by Princeps Smythe. The crew is rounded out by two Moderati; Moderati Cooper (Steersman) and Moderati Gallup (Sensors, Communic

Adeptus Mechanicus Sicarians and Tech Priests

Shortly after picking up Kill Team back in July, I picked up a box of Adeptus Mechanicus Sicarians. Though the box says Sicarian Ruststalkers, they can also be built as Sicarian Infiltrators. This is great as they are both options for a Adepts Mechanicus Kill Team and I could buy one box and have a few of each as options to add to the Mechanicus Kill Team that came with the Core Box. Last night I finally finished up the last few Rust Stalkers and Infiltrators (I had finished one of the Infiltrators when I was working on the Skitarri)New Adeptus Mechanicus SicariansSicarian Infiltrator PrincepsSicarian InfiltratorSicarian RuststalkersMore recently I picked up the Tech Priest Dominus Mechanicus Commander set when Kill Team: Commanders came out and I've painted him up as a commander. I also happen to have a regular Tech Priest that my friend Paul gave me for my birthday in February - presumably to serve with my Imperial Guard regiments - but as they turned out to be an commander option for the Mechanicus Ki

Mechanicus Kill Team

Last night I finished up the last of the stuff I was planning to bring to the Kill Team game I am running at ToonCon this weekend.Adeptus Mechanicus Kill TeamOriginally I thought I might paint them the same as the ones I painted for John, but then I kind of liked the look of the way they painted them in the book, so I went with something similar to that. I had also considered doing them as Skitarii Vanguard (since John's left his Rangers here and I could make use of them anytime...), but then I decided to build them all just like the ones in the book - that have premade data cards and stuff...With the exception of the Sicarian Infiltrator lurking in the back, these all came in the Kill Team Coe Box.Dorox-0.4343 - Skitarii Vanguard Alpha - the Leader of the Kill TeamSek-XXVII Skitarii - Vanguard Gunner/Zealot Specialist (With Plasma Caliver), Kappic-Schoelendt-18.1 - Skitarii Ranger/Comms Specialist, and AR-99 Skitarii Vanguard/Scout Specialist.Mu-575 and Actus-1111 - Skitarii VanguardGryphonne-Reductus-089, D
