Celtiberians coming down from the hills

A few shots of a DBA 3 game from last Friday. Keith fielded his Polybians against my Celtiberians. I hung about on the difficult terrain for a while (my head still thinks of the Celtiberians as they were in DBA 2.0), before finally charging the fast blade down and into the waiting blade and spear. A few 6:1 die results gave two breaks in the Roman line, allowing the Celtiberians to win the day. 6:1s will do that to you.

Conwy Wargames Club Feb DBA games

Ian hosted a DBA game. I confess I am a great fan of Hail Caesar and before that Tactica, when DBA came out I took a dislike to it because it looked like chess and DBM didn't win me over. Now both these views of DBA and DBM were purely based on seeing games at shows, reading the multitude of articles that came out in the magazines at the time, but never playing them.Since Ian has joined the club he's done a couple of games and the players have really enjoyed them, especially the DBM game. I realised there is no point being snobby  about a set of rules if you've never played them so in March I gave DBA a go.Ian hosted providing a Roman and Sassanid army and Pete brought along an Alan army that could be adjusted to represent Visigoth.Game 1I took control of the Romans and Pete his AlansBoth sides deployedLovely Alan horse archers, which to our shock don't shoot arrows! Base to base contact is required. It took some getting used too, but I see the logic of short range horse archery abstracted in to close co

How Far Jerusalem 1

The start of two armies in one; Late Crusaders for both DBA and ADLG. The miniatures are all from Gladiator Miniatures formerly owned by Black Hat Figures and now by Fighting 15s. These have all been a part of this year's Analogue Hobbies Painting Challenge IX and have been painted using block colours and a wash of Agrax Earthshade for tone.First two stands of spearmen showing Brother Knights and Brother Sergeants from the period between 1259 and 1273 when Brother Knights wore red tunics and Brother Sergeants remained in black. The papal bull was not popular and eventually over turned so that all Brothers wore red. The decals are water slide transfers and are from VVV. Going back to water slide transfers is quite refreshing and they still apply well if Micro Sol and Set are used sparingly. The shields are 15mm scale and the tabards are 10mm in scale.Crossbow and archers again from the sergeants.Spearmen and crossbowmen as they will be on the table for ADLG - the double depth is visual

Dance of Bronze 20

These little fellows were painted during the 30 days 30 miniatures challenges in 2018 and have only now been fully based. All three stands have figures from Rapier Miniatures Greek and Macedonian ranges.Three more phalanxes are needed to reach the required amount for a DBA army and each base will require a rear stand for ADLG as the bases are double depth. The cavalry will see use as medium Greek cavalry in both Greek and Macedonian armies with Companions and more medium cavalry to follow. As always the massed effect of 6mm figures is hugely appealing and perfect for basing on 40mm fronts.Next up will be some work in progress pictures then histoical and fantastical figures in varying sizes.Cheers for now.

Mycenaean demise ....

Another most excellent evening of DBA 3.0 games with Keith and Jim. My first game saw my Mycenaeans up against Keith's Hoplite Greeks. The Greeks were defending and, being Littoral, had the obligatory 'waterway', along with a village, a piece of rough going, and a road.DeploymentThe Greek shield wall up closeI flanked the Mycenaean pike with heavy chariots.. looking for the big punchThe first attack was pushed back for all except one of the pike blocksAttempts to daly with the Greek left on my right didn't end wellThe auxilia defending the right flank of the heavy chariots were flanked, while the chariots were repulsed againThe pike were flanked in their turn ..The right flank, with the auxilia destroyedThe pike block fends off the hoplites to front and flank, still trying for the breakthrough with pike and chariotThe heavy chariots on the right in their turn are now taken in their flankThe battle still rages around the Mycenaean pikeHowever the right flank heavy chariots are destroyed, the battle is lostBut w
