Game 18: Borka2 vs. Madrak1

The Not so Civil War continues! This time Borka the Vengeance of the Rimeshaws raises the Power of Dhunia to face his own kinsman whom Ironwood Chieftain Madrak has taken! The Glacier King is not really going to get shots against an entirely cold immune army (and all the stuff that isn't cold immune shouldn't be a viable target) that really he should be looking for places to run up and try to remove Mulg or Rok from the table.Borka2 uses a combination of charges, lightning fists, and countercharges to cut a hole into the Raider picket line. DEF 15 is no joke, but to beasts and a warlock who can boost, the bigger question is whether they will Tough under Madrak's Even Ground. getting lucky Lightning damage rolls to pop more Tough rolls helps widen the opening in the front. The best part is that it's behind a forest, a decent spot to hide my battlegroup. Mulg stays within 3" to keep Arcane Vortex in check to prevent Hunter from going off.Instead of a charge, the Glacier King opts to power strike the Earthborn int

My Lists for the Dice Dojo Steamroller March 9

We are hosting another dice dojo event at Chicagoland games this Saturday March 9. You can register for the event by submitting your lists at  https://conflictchamber.com/?event=734My own lists are publicly posted in advance. Left side, the model cutoff from Kolgrima is the minimum Long Riders, and right hand side the model cutoff from Grim1 is the Hooch Hauler. The Grim1 list is fun. I've played a variation of it before at Lock and Load and it performed admirably. I've traded the two minimum raider units in exchange for a full unit with a sorcerer just in case I need the magical weapons. I lose two bodies and an extra activation, but I like having the utility. The other way to gain that utility back would be to switch the krielstone elder to the stone scribe elder, but I feel like trying things with the Sorcerer and see how that goes.I've played all of one game with this iteration. As far as Kolgrima is concerned, the list is very similar to a standard Madrak1 list, and I'm debating whether or not it's jus

Game 5: Kolgrima Stonetruth vs. Grand Exemplar Kreoss

Round 2 of the Champions Steamroller I played Austin Thimesch on the Mirage map. I brought Kolgrima up against Kreoss2. He chose to go first and I chose to give him the side of the table with rubble on it.Our armies line up like so, and he looks at me and he looks at the 10" distance between the Bears and Judicator and Visgoth Rhoven. And he asks me straight out, "What are you doing here?""Asking to get shot I guess."So the Judicator aims and the choir sings Song of Battle because he forgets what his main gameplan against Kolgrima was. Sing Warding. Because Hunter's Mark. The Judicator does an impressive job opening a line of fire through and into the Bears and into Skaldi beyond. However, the Judicator is exposed. The Krielstone moves up and uses Wild Winds, Kolgrima casts Primal on Rok and advances 6" to the side and casts Hunter's Mark. She even feats just to give her some space, but of course it doesn't stop the Cinerators. Everything else maneuvers to clear a path for Rok.Rok charges for free with 6 Pow 20

Battle: Syvestro vs. Kreoss2

Round 3 of the Steamroller, I played Steven Mitchell's Protectorate. Looking at the pairings, he felt fairly confident that he could out tech me since he had access to my lists ahead of time (a self imposed condition I set for playing in a Steamroller I was running). So I went in with my Vulcan and promptly got wrecked .My trouble was not focus firing and looking for assassinations where there weren't any. Super fuel and the 8" minimum RNG combined with the right arc only position on the rocket was awkward to work with. And when I feated I kept forgetting the relevant portions of the feat, focusing on how the Vulcan's attacks COULD heal it should it be able to hit. With signs and portents it should have hit more often than not. And I needed the repairs on the Vulcan's left side so that I could spray everything over there without taking a penalty.I should have focused on clearing all that Kreoss Infantry because I'd underestimated what autohitting with extra attack Knights Exemplar could do to my screen of Heav

Battle: Syvestro vs. the Iron Lich

Round 1 of the Steamroller last Saturday I played James MacLeod who brought Cryx. Looking at his pairing I figured I'd have the best chance with my Syvestro list without thinking about the implications. Then when I looked and saw that he had some 20+ feedback attacks that could attack my warjacks and kill my casters, I knew I had problems.Storm Troopers weren't really going to help with that problem. The Sea Witches guarantee that the units will be blast immune as often as is necessary to combat that problem.Another vulnerability was Prospero. He had two Vanguards on him. It would be far easier for James to remove the Vanguards and prospero with feedback whips.I went first and made aggressive moves that didn't endanger my 'jacks to Backlash. Superfuel means the Vulcan and Vanguards get a 16" run.I feated to clear as many Satyxis with sprays as I could and suddenly a Feedback assassination was off the table. Syvestro has 15 boxes, at most he had maybe 6-7 Satyxis left. I probably should have sprayed first to t

Round robin round 3 : kolgrima vs. Thyra

13"That's the distance Fire Eaters can walk and spray and kill a lightly armored warcaster. Base SPD 6, additional SPD from the Northkin Elder, and it's easy enough to give them everything they need to threaten 13": fell caller pathfinder, pyre troll fire, even second unit can light them up.(Coincidentally, Grissel Marshal of the Rimeshaws can take that 13" and make it 14" with Dash)Everyone expects you to look for the assault threats that go out 16", so they think that line of sight denial is enough to stop you from burning them: cloud walls, forests, order denial. But you can step into a cloud wall, step into a forest, walk without orders. There are ways to prevent this. Usually it's as simple as a picket line that can engage the fire eaters on the outside of the 6" spray spot. Fire eaters can only spray while engaged if they assault. This seems obvious to some, but obvious also means I don't always look for it on the table myself. Francesc once talked me through an assassination on his own Haley3 by remindin

Painting Goals: STEAMROLLER

Next week I'm running the December Steamroller. A  few of the locals are signed up so it promises to be at least a three round round robin. Nothing unusual. We don't know the next Champions line up and we're not running a three list event or anything crazy like that. The door prize is going to be a miniature that I accidentally ordered an extra copy of, the Lady of the Feast, the Minicrate version of the Lord of the Feast model. I'm kind of donating the model into the prize pool as part entrance fee, part bribe.Yes. It's my entrance fee. For the first time ever I'm going to play in an event I'm running. This might not sound unusual to you coming from some other game systems. I've heard of Heroclix and 40k events with player TOs. However, I have heard the horror stories I've heard about negative player experience have come out from some such events where the TO is less than impartial. Warmachine events run by Press Gangers never allowed us to play, and I thought it was with good reason. So I've tried to inst

Round Robin Round 2: Madrak Ironhide vs. the Iron Mother

Round 2 of the Dice Dojo Round Robin I played against Jordan Nach. One of his lists was an old standby from Mk2 that I crashed my head into repeatedly trying to outkill the respawning of 50 convergence troops, and his second list had guns. With my pairing I had to drop recursion and hope that the Iron Mother couldn't outshoot Madrak Ironhide before the infantry could arrive.Early on Madrak sent his Long Riders out to contest/clear the right zone, but they overextended and some flares and shots later I would lose one Long Rider. Eventually a servitor was going to contest the zone in a really awkward place and I would have to abandon the thought of scoring the zone.Probably my main concern was going to be the Transfinite Emergence Projector in the middle of the table, threatening my champions and ground pounders threatening my Fennbllades, but on Iron Mother's feat turn none of that was enough. The Bomber and Madrak were able to clear enough space for a Champion and two Fennblades to get charges on the Iron

Round Robin Round 1: Kolgrima vs. Iona

Late post. Played in a round robin at Chicagoland Games the Dice Dojo last week, and round 1 I got to play Kolgrima into Chad Kaufman's Iona in the Devourer's Host. All the Tharn covered the front of the table. Just a whole bunch of Ravagers. I ambushed one unit of Bears and deployed one unit on the left flank. Chad's Wolf Riders were all over the Right Flank supported by Stalkers and a Champion. Once I saw this, I decided to make a play for the left flank instead, and started to make moves in that direction. One unit of Fire Eaters got lit up by the Pyre Troll and got sent after Two Wolf Riders on the hill. Kolgrima moved up behind the forest and aggressively feated with Vanish, managing to Snowblind all the way out to the Lord of the Feast. Her army was mostly safe near the woods as the frontline Tharn lost Pathfinder from Snowblind, and Rok started making moves to turn into the center zone. In response the Tharn positioned as best they could to reduce any inroads I'd make by presenting one o
