Say the X like E (Gaslands) – Pole Position, Teams & Hazards

Such surprises as this title come easily out of playing Gaslands.  It's a racing game allowing for players to have their own spin on the speed which makes this fun. Then how does X fit in?  It has to do with a Grand Prix.  So the last word means prize and that's how the people in Monaco would say the word used in that very famous international race. Why did I use this race?  Well it has teams.  Just like Gaslands.  But individual approaches show up when playing this game because these rules allow such things.  Why not? Now consider...continue reading

Cars of Course (Gaslands) with Jerry Mandering

Once cars changed tires, several times, on a regular good drive. But problems would spoil it! They could get stuck. Worse, there were times they fell over. Even much worse was when a head on collision smacked into both cars caught in the same rut and they couldn't avoid it. Still something was needed. It was speed. Yes. A dealer from Indiana realized how excitement was waiting to begin. So he created the Indy 500. His idea was to stage a great race where speed could happen. It was the fun cars were meant to have. It sold cars! But...continue reading

Nostalgia Time: White Dwarf 125 – What Was Your First?

Whilst perusing Mengel Miniatures on my regular trawl of the blogs, I stumbled across an article about “My very first White Dwarf” and it got me all nostalgic and thoughtful. What was my first White Dwarf? White Dwarf 125 was the first issue that I bought. It’s long since lost, unfortunately, to a house move that went bad. And then Games Workshop released the End of Times and then Age of Sigmar! Omens and portents abound. Back in the halcyon days of 1990, an avid gamer was limited to whatever stock could be found in the FLGS (in this case,...continue reading

Dice – They See Me Rollin’ (History & Superstition)

“C’mon, c’mon, c’mon … anything but a one!!” **CLATTER, CLATTER, CLATTER*“#*@&^!!” You’ve been there, don’t lie. I’m not even going to pretend that’s not one of my actual conversations when engaging in our favourite past time. The history of dice is interesting. The word comes from Latin “datum” or “something which is given or played”. Depending on how your rolling is going, you may want to give them away. Often at high speed and occasionally at the friendly, smiling face on the other side of the table. These double as gaming aids as well as assault weapons. Some of the...continue reading

Why Do You Suck at Painting? Learning the Hobby

This one popped up on one of the Facebook groups a while ago. New to the game and suck at painting. Any tips for a beginner? Why do you suck at painting? Because you’re beginning. This is a new hobby. You’ve not done it before. I am not specifically targeting the person in the post, it’s just the first one that I could find. I want to use this example to remind us all that we were beginners. And, like anything, being a beginner is hard. Because it’s supposed to be! Because you don’t wake up and decide today you’re...continue reading

Chronicles of Thor – The Cold Hard Slap of Reality

This is only the third entry in this little series I've got going and it's not all fun. However, let's start with the fun stuff, shall we? Nightvault Gaming After getting my Thorns of the Briar Queen painted, I was able to take them out for a spin and played a few games with them against Farstriders.   My first game saw me get completely smashed as I struggled to use a warband that wasn't all, "Rawr! I'm going to punch you in the dick!" It was fun though and I applied some lessons learned to my second game where...continue reading

Tourney Lessons Learned – Bigger Isn’t Always Better!

Sometimes a tourney is a resounding success, sometimes not so much. Even when things fail though the tourney can teach you some lessons. I run local tournaments in my city, and have done so for many years.   We've cultivated a culture which stresses fun over competitiveness and as such many of the netlists and ultra-competitive types just don't bother coming to our tournies. No ITC points, all prizes are random draws, winners receive their name on the store trophy, a round of applause and a crisp high-five.  Our random draws have $800 or more worth of product on the prize...continue reading

Far Beyond Driven – The Lonely, Secluded, and Ambitious Blogger

Every now and then I'll jump on to Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc., and feel like I'm being left out. It's not that I don't have friends on social networks, or that nobody follows the blog on any of them either, but that I just don't have the time to invest in them. To make social networking really work for you as a creator, entrepreneur, blogger, etc., you have to constantly feed the beast of social media. If you aren't posting often, and posting interesting content, then you fall to the bottom of the pile and nobody sees what you post...continue reading

Playing 8th Edition Tyranids – Thoughts, Tips, and Tactics

Hello true followers of the great devourer!  It's been quite the wild ride being a Tyranid player for the past several years, but as the dust is settling (somewhat) on our 8th edition codex and the recent big FAQ, I figured it was time to talk bugs. Tyranids were my first 40k army.  I was a diehard Warhammer Fantasy player and never was interested in the sci-fi grimdark in the least.  However I really truly loved the Tyranid models and they sucked me into the game, and my wallet hasn't really recovered since! Now at the time I began thinking about...continue reading
