After a flurry of painting activity (you can always tell when it's a term break), in 15mm (French Ordonnance for DBA) and 6mm (1940 French for Spearhead), I was about to get stuck into the remaining 6mm FPW army (which have sat unpainted for perhaps a decade.However I managed to tweak muscles in my lower back while in the garden this morning and, feeling pretty annoyed, I wanted something different to do. Even sitting at the painting table for more than 10 minutes at a time resulted in some discomfort, so it needed to be a project that could be done in small easy chunks. Aha, I had a spare Airfix RHA 18pdr, and some British Colonial artillery crew (Ha0, so put these together to create an artillery stand for the 20mm Weird World War 1 artillery.The artillery stand. Well, yup, a little toy truck that I was sure had a use.,.. and I was right. Initially it was going to be a 'knight' for the HotT Weird World War 1 army, but it was a little large for the base, so ... another behemoth it is. That seems to fit with the 'narrative' I have in my mind .. an army of large lumbering inventions ... behemoths, if I ever I saw them. The basic toy needed those add-ons that would make it the WWW1 beast, so there was a lot of digging into the spares box, as you do.Here is the end result.
For the second week in a row I have been able to enjoy some 'gaming. Last week it was some DBA 3.0 with Keith. This week some HotT with Andy. These are all interesting games that seem to suit the currently busy life style. Short games with enough depth to challenge to the degree that you fell suited, without requiring the investment of 3-4 hours for a single outcome.We managed four games in two hours (along with beer, coffee, sausage rolls, and plenty of good conversation). So it's like this... we'd been given a couple of packets of sachets of dog food. We don't normally feed our girls with that stuff, it's mostly water and very little nutrition. But... there were these interesting looking plastic packaging retainers in which the sachets sat. I hate consigning interesting looking stuff to the landfills, so the question was what could I make of them.I put them face to face, and trimmed the edging off the top one. This looked a little like a bunker, or a magical tunnel , or ... well who knows. I had in mind something that might work for WWW1, or VSF, either as a piece of terrain, or a stronghold, for our HotT games. I just added a table tennis ball for a dome and a dish.So, here is the finished piece, in the first photo complete with British VSF troops.And here with WWW1 units.I added some details at each end to look like lights.And played with the idea of a magical dome.. it didn't quite work, but it'll do.
Work has been a bit frantic of late, and there has been little time (or energy) for painting, modelling, and generally creating. The little time I've had has been spent on a few games.Determination to change this drew my attention to a ribbon reel that I'd picked up several months ago, inspired by that wonderful Tsarist tank image.I finally managed to complete this ....A behemoth for the Weird World War 1 British army for Hordes of the Things (HotT).Gas missile projectors.. the noses of the missiles coloured yellow in the best British ordnance tradition.I find this 'creating' to be a bit of fun, although often it takes a few conversations with others, seeking inspiration from their own ideas, or maybe the odd 'spare bit' from their spares boxes to supplement my own.In this case, the 'steering wheels' came courtesy of Andy. The other bits come courtesy of some Games Workshop sprues.. not sure I can recall exactly what they were.

He had successfully forced his way past the barbarian peoples of the steppes, and the Chief Dumnoriox had fled to the remotest corners of the steppe to lick his wounds.But this was something else. Hmm, so .. Okay.. here's a wee challenge.These figures are some of the remnants of my very first ancients army, those Airfix Romans. They are pretty much painted up, have nice shields that need re-attachment, and include some Roman light cavalry that were converted from Airfix ACW cavalry, with Roman head swaps. There are even some ACW conversions that were meant to be Gothic cavalry.They need no longer do service in the historical/DBA scene, so what can I make of them in HotT?Initial thinking and discussion suggests maybe Roman gladiators/Blade, with wolf God, and circus animals as beasts .. Lions and all that.It seems such a waste to do nothing with them. Other suggestions are welcome.
Pushing past the Turkish forces had been easy. Evading rather than confronting the Turkish (and British) forces had been easier than he'd believed, and so here he was entering the land of the Egyptian, a land of great necromancers, a land purportedly raised up by mysterious visitors from the skies. While I have several projects 'snapping at my heels', so to speak, I am trying to make progress on the 72 point HotT Weird World War 1 army. The army needed some riders, but I didn't want to go for traditional horsed cavalry, even though my original creative vision had been for horses wearing gas masks, in the same way that many of the non re-animated infantry are.The concept of 'riders' seemed to speak to me of interesting. weird, oddball vehicle creations, not all human crewed. I spent a lot of time rifling through the traditional spares box (the modeller's 'pandora's box) looking for bits, but more importantly looking for inspiration. I had a mental picture of what I wanted, but individually none of the eventual creations look much like that at all. However collectively I like the look of the 'unit'. It has been a while since I've paid any attention to the Weird World War 1 British army. However, finally another leap forward, with the MkIV behemoth completed. The kit was an Emhar Mk IV female tank. The pose is necessary to try to keep the model within the parameters of the behemoth base size.Here are some of the stands completed so far: the behemoth flanked by a pair of shooters, the magician, and hero to the front, the God to the left, and a re-animated 1914 horde unit to the right, with the Sopwith Camel aerial hero to the right rear.So the army now stands at 50 points completed.. this is going to be a 72 point army ready for Big Battle HotT. There is a BE2c airboat to be built, and then, well we'll see.
And with a roaring 'boom', the napoleonic HotT army is basically done.. well the fighting core of it, to 72 points. Not wanting to spend too much time painting figures (this was, after all, an exercise in making use of surplus figures otherwise consigned to sit in a box unused), I decided to make double use of the French artillery based for Volley and Bayonet. As they will need to continue to serve in that context, I made a couple of simple sabot bases to give the guns the correct HotT frontage when in use in the HotT environment.The French artillerySabot basesSo this is the army basically completed to 72 points. Prompted by Andy's quick fire Napoleonic HotT army, I re-discovered a pile of surplus figures left over from a wonderful Gerard Davey gift (his own surplus figures IIRC). The bulk of the figures created a large Volley and Bayonet army, but there were some figures left over. What better idea than a heroic napoleonic French army. So, here is the first phase of the project completed. Our intention is NOT to fight napoleonic era battles. We use Volley and bayonet for that. But it seems that using French line infantry as spears, or behemoths, could do the business.Our aim is to fight fantasy battles.
It's been a little quiet on the hobby and painting front of late. Life tends to get in the way really. 'Work - the curse of the 'gaming classes'. However I have been quietly pottering with the foot elements of the 'Weird World War 1' British army, the opposition to Andy's Germans. This journey began with the aerial hero, the Sopwith Camel. Then came the Hordes.. re-animated 1914 British infantry, then the Shooters (Lewis gunners with rifle support), and now some Blades... all of these latter are Strelets British Infantry in Gasmasks. The 'vision' for the army is one of reanimated troops, zombies if you like, with a slightly supernatural look/feel. So for example there is no pilot in the Camel.The blade have just come off the painting table, leaving me with 30 points of finished troops, a playable army for 24 points.
