Rangers of Shadow Deep
I have probably mentioned several times in the last that I am something of an enforced painted – I paint because I really don’t like the look of bare plastic and metal on the tabletop. Painting isn’t part of the hobby I would necessarily choose to do – I would much prefer to be playing games. However, since I also think that I should paint the models I have bought to put on the tabletop, I find myself looking to use what techniques and skills that I can find to make painting as quick and painless as possible. My goal isn’t to paint models that will win awards, but rather to get models onto the tablet that look decent from “wargames range” – the range you see figures when actually playing with them. This is typically 3′ – 4′, so if a model I have painted looks good at arm’s length, I am usually pretty happy. With the Watchtower at Tor Varden cleared of the evil Kobolds emerging from the Shadowdeep, Bron and his companions scout a steep pathway leading down the cliffs behind the guard tower. Mustering what provisions they can from the stores of the Tor, they set out immediately on their third mission, this time past the borders of Alladore into the Shadowdeep itself!
They say that Man’s best friend in his dog. Well, in Rangers of Shadow Deep (reviewed on podcast episode 262) there is a good chance that in a four player game a Ranger’s only companion, at least at low level, will be some form of hunting hound, as this is one of only a few companions that can be afforded when you start the game. I found these rather nice Hunting Hound miniatures from Otherworld Miniatures – you can find them here. Now, you can go with the way the dogs are painted on the Underworld website, which is fine. However, you may want to rely on more than just model pose to tell the dogs apart, which will mean painting them in different colours. But what are the possible colours of an Irish Wolfhound? Well, I have just found this colour chart of Wolfhounds on the Showdog.com website which I hope will be useful in painting the above models.

Mission 3: Descent into Darkness, Scenario 3: The Last Stand Having pushed through the swamp, the land becomes firmer and the gnarled trees less dense. The rolling black clouds above still cast everything in a perpetual twilight and ash and smoke still drifts in the air. For the most part, the land is quiet. No birds sing, no insects call out. Occasionally, a small animal twitters from the shadows or scampers through the dead leaves. Twice you have spotted small patrols composed of gnolls and masked men, but both times you have been able to find cover and remain undetected. With few indications of the passage of time, you are forced to rely on your own reckoning and the growl of your stomach to know when to call halts, rest, and eat. MISSION 3: DESCENT INTO DARKNESS, SCENARIO 2: SWAMPLANDFor nearly a full day, you and your companions carefully climbed down the broken stairs. Day eventually gave way to a murky twilight as the sun was blotted from the sky by the thick, dark clouds of the Shadow Deep. Most of your party have covered their faces to block out the ash and stink of the place. Finally, the stairway came to an end in front of a boggy pool, dotted with broken ruins and a few trees. The water nearest the stairs is too deep to wade, but it appears to quickly become shallower further on. If you want to carry on with your mission, there is no choice but to swim through the dark waters until you reach solid ground. Rangers of Shadow Deep, Mission 3: Descent into DarknessWhile the battle against the Shadow Deep rages along the line of the old beacon towers, you and your companions have made a huge discovery. Scouting the area behind Tor Varden, you found a long, deep fissure that runs down into the gloom of the Shadow Deep. Within this fissure is a rough and broken stairway. It seems too purposeful to be a natural occurrence, yet its rough surface and uneven, sloping steps argue against it being made by the hands of men. Reporting your find to your superiors, you quickly receive new orders. You are to lead your team down the stairs and penetrate as far as you can into the Shadow Deep. You will be the first warriors of Alladore to enter the cursed realm and any intelligence you can bring back will be of huge importance. The report is a complete playthrough.Pre game notesThe first scenario I’ve played that picks up immediately after the previous one, while we’ve been given some chance to revive our men that were knocked out of action and luckily not wounded any worse. The team wastes little time moving on climbing the tower stairs and coming to the inevitable mission showdown. Standard changes are the rooms sizes are scaled down to fit my terrain, and Orcs replace Gnolls as the primary soldiers of the Shadow Deep. Rangers of Shadow Deep, Mission 2, The Beacon Tower: Scenario 2 Tor Varden, The Lower LevelThis report is a complete playthrough.Full layout of lower levels with all the bits for the potential 4 rooms.Pre-game notes.I already gave my initial thoughts on the scale down of the towers rooms in my last post but-Wow I still had a lot more to do here than I Initially planned. Not only did I build the modular floors and walls for all 3 rooms, I had put together a bunch of different things to fill out all four potential rooms in the scenario. Thankfully I had all the bits and pieces I needed it just took me while to paint 20 something small bits of scatter terrain / atmosphere decoration. The host of Kobolds occupying Tor Varden and their insidious Shaman overlord have been slain. The vengeful Rangers continue to cut their way to the top of the tower, led on by the fait cries of someone left alive… but what they will find there will change the face of Alladore forever.
Tor Varden is one of three beacon watchtowers mentioned in “Mission 2: The Beacon Tower “contained in the Rangers of Shadow Deep rulebook. In scenario 2 you must assault the tower and take it back from the Shadow Deep invaders that are using the captured the watchtower ‘s alight with green fire as the front line of its creeping dominion. A forboding signal to the people of the Kingdom of Allladore that the Shadow Deep , now fully in control of the neighboring Lorenthia , is coming for them- next. Breaking the line and taking back Tor Varden will return it as a key stronghold to Keep the forces of Shadow Deep at bay , for now.So one of the many things I really like about this game is get to break out a bunch of stuff I haven’t used in years or use stuff I built that’s on display on my table as background scenery but haven’t really got to use yet And of course motivate myself to paint more miniatures this year and shrink the great unpainted pile.The
