Mission 3: Descent into Darkness, Scenario 3: The Last Stand Having pushed through the swamp, the land becomes firmer and the gnarled trees less dense. The rolling black clouds above still cast everything in a perpetual twilight and ash and smoke still drifts in the air. For the most part, the land is quiet. No birds sing, no insects call out. Occasionally, a small animal twitters from the shadows or scampers through the dead leaves. Twice you have spotted small patrols composed of gnolls and masked men, but both times you have been able to find cover and remain undetected. With few indications of the passage of time, you are forced to rely on your own reckoning and the growl of your stomach to know when to call halts, rest, and eat. You have passed several streams, which seem to contain fresh water, though you remain wary of drinking from them.Just as your companions are starting to tire, and you are considering calling a halt for sleep, youspy a broken structure in the gloom ahead. Crawling forwa
MISSION 3: DESCENT INTO DARKNESS, SCENARIO 2: SWAMPLANDFor nearly a full day, you and your companions carefully climbed down the broken stairs. Day eventually gave way to a murky twilight as the sun was blotted from the sky by the thick, dark clouds of the Shadow Deep. Most of your party have covered their faces to block out the ash and stink of the place. Finally, the stairway came to an end in front of a boggy pool, dotted with broken ruins and a few trees. The water nearest the stairs is too deep to wade, but it appears to quickly become shallower further on. If you want to carry on with your mission, there is no choice but to swim through the dark waters until you reach solid ground. Still, it is not a decision you take lightly, for who knows what could be living beneath the surface of the dark water? This report is a complete play-through.Updated Character SheetsPre game notes: At first glance this is probably the most basic of the introductory scenarios. The new thing here will be
Rangers of Shadow Deep, Mission 3: Descent into DarknessWhile the battle against the Shadow Deep rages along the line of the old beacon towers, you and your companions have made a huge discovery. Scouting the area behind Tor Varden, you found a long, deep fissure that runs down into the gloom of the Shadow Deep. Within this fissure is a rough and broken stairway. It seems too purposeful to be a natural occurrence, yet its rough surface and uneven, sloping steps argue against it being made by the hands of men. Reporting your find to your superiors, you quickly receive new orders. You are to lead your team down the stairs and penetrate as far as you can into the Shadow Deep. You will be the first warriors of Alladore to enter the cursed realm and any intelligence you can bring back will be of huge importance. Take any opportunity to strike against the enemy, but your primary goal is reconnaissance. This report is a complete playthrough. After recapturing the Beacon Tower- Tor Varden, Ranger Blackwul
Emergency orders from the Commander take Bron and another Ranger to a village beset upon by horrors unimaginable. On their journey there they encounter a group of Auxiliary soldiers who have survived the assault. With their companions left behind in the race to arrive the King’s Men are forced to rely on these locals to aid and as guides… but one of them is now what they seem… Check out Rangers of Shadow Deep’s first Micro Supplement HERE: https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/261465/Rangers-of-Shadow-Deep-Blood-Moon
The report is a complete playthrough.Pre game notesThe first scenario I’ve played that picks up immediately after the previous one, while we’ve been given some chance to revive our men that were knocked out of action and luckily not wounded any worse. The team wastes little time moving on climbing the tower stairs and coming to the inevitable mission showdown. Standard changes are the rooms sizes are scaled down to fit my terrain, and Orcs replace Gnolls as the primary soldiers of the Shadow Deep. All other aspects are unchanged. All die rolls are shown as (X) all combat rolls are (x,x) The first number always being the heroes. There is no target point in this scenario.TacticsThe Shadow Knight here is the most powerful foe we have faced yet , and while this scenario bypasses both Clues and Random events for 3 scripted ones, it seem to be the most challenging.Given that- I have decided not to “recharge” my heroic abilities but play this as the continuing mission that it reads. Ranger Blac
Rangers of Shadow Deep, Mission 2, The Beacon Tower: Scenario 2 Tor Varden, The Lower LevelThis report is a complete playthrough.Full layout of lower levels with all the bits for the potential 4 rooms.Pre-game notes.I already gave my initial thoughts on the scale down of the towers rooms in my last post but-Wow I still had a lot more to do here than I Initially planned. Not only did I build the modular floors and walls for all 3 rooms, I had put together a bunch of different things to fill out all four potential rooms in the scenario. Thankfully I had all the bits and pieces I needed it just took me while to paint 20 something small bits of scatter terrain / atmosphere decoration. This in the end was a good thing as its better now painted up for use then sitting around in a bin on my desk.I also put everything together for Scenario 3 which included even more pieces, while I get to reuse my floor tiles as the tower roof , the walkway, floor hatch, bonfire, prisoner, pilla
The host of Kobolds occupying Tor Varden and their insidious Shaman overlord have been slain. The vengeful Rangers continue to cut their way to the top of the tower, led on by the fait cries of someone left alive… but what they will find there will change the face of Alladore forever.
Tor Varden is one of three beacon watchtowers mentioned in “Mission 2: The Beacon Tower “contained in the Rangers of Shadow Deep rulebook. In scenario 2 you must assault the tower and take it back from the Shadow Deep invaders that are using the captured the watchtower ‘s alight with green fire as the front line of its creeping dominion. A forboding signal to the people of the Kingdom of Allladore that the Shadow Deep , now fully in control of the neighboring Lorenthia , is coming for them- next. Breaking the line and taking back Tor Varden will return it as a key stronghold to Keep the forces of Shadow Deep at bay , for now.So one of the many things I really like about this game is get to break out a bunch of stuff I haven’t used in years or use stuff I built that’s on display on my table as background scenery but haven’t really got to use yet And of course motivate myself to paint more miniatures this year and shrink the great unpainted pile. The
With the Kobolds guarding the river ford slain and the remaining patrols easily avoided, Bron and his companions arrive at the great Beacon Tower of Tor Varden. The courtyard appears abandoned, but from far above cries of despair can be heard….
Rangers of Shadow Deep, Mission 2: The Beacon Tower. Ep 1: The Bridge GuardsThe following is my 3rd Rangers of Shadow Deep complete play- throughPre-game notesDidn’t have to a lot for this one either other than paint up my “Terrain Crate” Camp site, the Vulture and one more Frostgrave Soldier for a potential Tor Varden Man at Arms. The mission specifies Gnolls as the adversary . I don’t own any Gnolls, but I could not think of better use for my horde of Lord of the Rings Orcs and primary agents of Shadow Deep in my games , the Orcs have the exact same stats as the Gnolls presented in the mission or the RoSD bestiary. All die rolls are shown as (X) all combat rolls are (x,x) The first number always being the heroes. There is no Target Point in this scenario but the Orcs will never randomly move into the river. This scenario lasts a maximum of ten turns. During the event phase of each odd- numbered turn (so turns 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9) I will draw one Event Card
My Favorite Things 2018I always finish the year out on the blog with some sort of year end commentary on my wargaming hobby. This year I thought I’d try something different, instead of toothless resolutions or lamenting my lack of posting I thought I mention my favorite wargaming related things of 2018, I may not have played a ton of games this year or go to Adepticon but I did actually do more than last couple years combined (or least it feels like it) so as we kiss off 2018 here’s what was keeping me busy this year when it comes to wargaming.Favorite Miniatures Company:Reaper MiniaturesNot too much of a shock if you’ve read the blog the last 12 years, they’re always in the background and always right there besides whatever else I am talking about. I’ve been a fan, I’ve been highly irritated by some decisions thye’ve made but they’ve have persevered and have kept my loyalty longer than any other miniature company. This year I bought , built and painted more Reaper than any other manufacture, for&
Rangers of Shadow Deep, Mission 1, Episode 2: The Infected Trees.Moving right along Blackwulf and the boys continue their quest!Updated Roster Sheets:Intro:“Examining the bodies of the zombies, along with the other clues from the village, left little doubt. The village had been attacked by some horrific species of giant spider, whose venom reanimated the dead. Thankfully, such creatures move slowly. Likely, they will have retreated to the nearest shelter to slowly feast upon the missing villagers. Your duty is clear. Taking just enough time to patch up your wounds, and make a quick pyre for the dead, you set off after the spiders, following their faint, but unique tracks. After nearly a day’s pursuit, the tracks lead into a small forest. Chances are the spiders are not too deep in the woods. You must find them, destroy them and any nests they might have made, and, if you are lucky, rescue any survivors. The map, lower portion got cut off but you can easily tell whats going on from the other photosPrelimi
As I mentioned last time, I recently picked up Rangers of Shadow Deep by Frostgrave author Joseph McCullogh. Since I am painting Frostgrave guys for Adepticon it was time to give Rangers of Shadow Deep (RoSD) Mission 1 a solo play-through. One of the things I presume that is making this game popular ( for a small indie game that is pushing 2000 members in its private Facebook group) is that its both Solo and Co-Op -something that until the last 3-4 years when all these Heroquest type board games started making a comeback hasnt really been a "thing"Since it has an open ended narrative (within the context of each scenario) and you can use ‘whatever miniatures” I find it to be a cross between OSR RPG played as a tactical miniatures game. With a very cool atmosphere that I’ll dub Tolkien or even Glen Cook-esque in its background I think that McCullough has got something unique here and a great companion to the player vs player action of Frostgrave. While conveniently after decades of wargaming, I have most
Having discovered the fates of the missing villagers Bron and his men receive word that the Beacon Tower of Tor Varden has gone strangely silent. Unable to wait for further aide from the King, the Ranger and his Companions head into the borderlands to investigate.
