Dark Angels - Ravenwing Dark Shroud part 10 - TO DONE!

And here we are the Ravenwing Dark Shroud is complete. I think I'm satisfied with the result. As usual there are elements that exceed my expectations while there are others that fall short, or are compromised. But I'm not overly fussed about the result, which I appreciate sounds a little underwhelming. This is a model I need in my army to make the Ravenwing more effective. Their function/inclusion is a key element of taking Ravenwing so he had to be done. And the result matches my existing Ravenwing so all those boxes are ticked. The black highlights are exactly as expected which is good but as predicted the varnish did show up some brush strokes, but I'll not lose sleep over them.Almost everything else went to plan, although I didn't take any pictures with the plasma battery. The red glass windows are another area that falls a little short. A lot of the preparatory shading/highlights have been neutralized by the Tamiya Clear Red X-27, which is a shame. I should probably go super contrast next time, probabl

Angels - Ravenwing Dark Shroud part 9 - Almost there

The Dark Shroud is almost complete now, for the life of me I don't know what all the fuss was about. The DJ has his orange targeting lenses done, you can also see some of the scribbled oaths of moment on the front of his booth. I spontaneously decided to edge it in red, I don't know why. It harks back a little to the Typhoons, as their launchers are edged red but it really wasn't that considered. The Icon of Caliban had its Ferron marble painted. It might be a little busy looking but I can live with it. The Calibanite ruins had a wash of Waywatcher green just add a little mossiness to the effect. I kept the purity seals pure white, that might be a mistake, but again I'm past caring at this stage - I can always add a sepia wash later on.The glow FX on the battery are a little clunky, not so much on the barrel but the plasma coils. I can always tweak them but I can't imagine using them anyway so it doesn't deserve any more effort at this stage. The anti-grav glows far more effective and almost the same as my Typh

Dark Angels - Ravenwing Dark Shroud part 8 - Windows and lenses

Work continues gradually on the Dark Shroud. I'm sure you had thought the 'stained glass' windows had looked a bit rough around the edges and will be glad to see they've been cleaned up a bit. The window frames still need some tweaks but I need to varnish, Tamiya Clear Red X-27, highlight black and varnish the frames [possibly] again. The cockpit windows also got highlights. It's doubtful any of these highlights will be noticeable, if at all visible with the pilot in-situ, but the process must be done. The 'DJ' is mostly complete, just need to do his targeting lenses, although his helmet lens is done.As is the gunner's. And the pilot. They're all a bit rough around the edges, and I don't mean the slight OSL I usually apply, but the quality isn't what I normally manage. However, the eye-lenses are somewhat smaller and harder to define than usual so I've done the best I can considering - just need to move it forward.A mixed bag of the remaining bits, the Plasma Battery has had a first pass of orange, while t

Dark Angels - Ravenwing Dark Shroud part 7 - Highlights complete [mostly]

I followed up the Incubi Darkness with Grim Reaper, but forgot to photograph just that stage. I then added a pale blue craft acrylic fine highlight. It's not a particularly opaque paint which I think helps thin it.All the Ravenwing badges were highlighted too up to their final white. Its a very odd model to paint in sections. I have the Speeder, the gunner [who snapped off his legs], the driver, the 'DJ booth' the 2 magnetised guns, the 2 Plasma Battery's and the Shroud Icon emitter. It's quite and eclectic mix, different sizes, different requirements. But the black is mostly done, just some tidy ups to do.I threw on some green for dials and displays. It's a slight departure and a little 'disco' but what the hell. I also spotted I hadn't finished some more of the bronze elements so added a little more highlights. I've another highlight to add, a sepia wash to age it and then verdigris for patina. I did get carried away and started the orange glow FX on the Plasma Battery, not having done the verdigris, so I'l

Dark Angels - Ravenwing Dark Shroud part 6 - Highlights

I've documented how difficult the Dark Shroud has become and in part this is lack of time to focus and overcome elements in one sitting. Ideally I want to do all highlights in one go, it takes a mental effort to stop partway through. With only an hour an evening I just couldn't come to terms with that. However my eldest is away at Oxford University for four nights and having pushed to get Y'lthari's Guardians complete I had planned in advance to capitalise on the extra time in the evening to break its back. Incubi Darkness edge highlighting is the task at hand, but keeping that hand steady is the real challengeHowever, I was quick to tidy up any overzealous highlights with an application of black. Foolishly I used Army Painter black instead of Abaddon Black. When applied it's not a problem but you can see clearly when its dry [around the filler caps] it is completely different to Abaddon. Fixable, but annoying. Also annoying is the bane of long-term projects that have been put on hold - dust! I tried dusting

Dark Angels - Redemptor Dreadnought Big Build - TO DONE!

Building models alwaysfeels like a day job to me but most of my hobby time is at night. I'd got to the point where I needed to do his pose and that had to be the obligatory 'standing on something' that is all the rage. Of course that becomes fiddly, cutting plastic pegs off to allow joints to rotate, trying to old poses in place while poly-cement and super-glue dry, but somehow I managed it.I have to admit I do like this dreadnought. When it was first revealed I wasn't fussed but having one it seemed churlish not to build it and it's deceptively bulky too. I was easilt convinced it was bigger than my Warglaives, but it's shorter - clearly the extra bulk adds a few inches in height. To that end I may call him Brother Jacamo. His main weapon is just push fit but the others are glued in - 8 Storm Bolter shots seems the better fit than the FragstormMy only issue is the ball of the waist joint is almost out of the socket. Not sure if I need to disguise this somehow, possibly greenstuff ribbed tubing, as if it's a f

1750pts battle report - Imperial Knights & Dark Angels v Tyranids

Otty had a free evening and wanted to arrange a game but that created a problem as I wanted to run my Knights for convenience but I was certain Otty's Tyranids would be on the road to a hiding if I did. Once again I looked at some of the narrative missions but as it turned out we went with the same mission I played with Liam - the Echoes of War mission in Vigilus Defiant called Forlorn Charge. It was Knights and Freeblades versus Ork Stompas, Morkanauts and Gorkanauts. It compressed the Knights into a 2'x2' corner with the 'Orks' creating their 'scrap city' and deploying first. There were also benefits for running a Fortification network and some additional stratagems. What we did was swap out the Ork elements for Monstrous Creatures. This wasn't too bad really as victory conditions were for my Knights to destroy all his Knights and buildings for a Major Victory, Minor if I killed more than were left alive and Defeat if it was any other result. Otty went with 2 Tyrannofex, Old One Eye and 5 Screa

Dark Angels - Ravenwing Dark Shroud part 5

With both the Sanctum Imperialis and my Ravenwing Dark Shroud as priorities the Sanctum took preference when I balked at the Speeder, so when the Sacntum became troublesome I used the fact I had to patina the building to simultaneously do the same on the Speeder. Not that it'd likely weather in these areas [maybe the grav plate holds moisture in the up-wash...?]. But this was another example of 'misdirection', like how my Mum used to give us veggie-burgers with sausages just as a way to have more vegetables on our diet. If I'm going to push on with one troublesome task I may as well do the same on another project. At the very least it's one less thing to do, to make it easier when I pick it up in earnest. Thankfully the thought of painting the black meant I was not easily distracted from the Sanctum.I'll get back onto this when the Sanctum is complete but small steps. I think the controls and touch some of the metallics up will be next. I won't mention how I think the verdigris on the engines a little too much

1750pts battle report - Imperial Knights & Dark Angels v Renegade Knights & Chaos Space Marines

Liam had observed we haven't had a game for a long time so we arranged get together but what to play? Having tried Kill Team and Deathwatch Overkill we thought it should be 40k but as I had the chance bring my [mostly] Knights for convenience and their first march AND the fact Liam is the only one with a similar company of Knights it seemed like a more balanced match up. That said he has Renegade Knights which only have access to two stratagems I wanted something different, more narrative. There was an Echoes of War mission in Vigilus Defiant called Forlorn Charge. I thought this might help Liam out but it transpires the Attacker gets all the coolest extra Strats but even so Liam deployed the terrain and chose his Fortress of Redempt

The Damned One

Finished! My take on the Legion of the Damned. Painted during a small class I taught in England. I've always loved the concept, ever since that fabled and limited release of a legion of the damned captain in the 2nd edition era. I'll be making more of these. And yes we can code name him Nicholas Cage ala the ghost rider documentary.

2000pts battle report - Imperial Knights & Dark Angels v Iron Hands Space Marines - LCO 5

Last game of the tournament and I've got Robin Neill from Geeks Wargaming you can see the preview of his army list here. I think Otty might have been up against Iron Hands this weekend too [if not Neill himself] as I'd overheard something about their durability - apparently a 6+ Feel No Pain equivalent throughout.I think I finished deploying first and despite going as far up the board as possible I still had a long way to go to reach the Astartes...as Robin deployed well back in his zone, surrounding a big invul buffing Dreadnought with the rest of his Dread crew.We rolled off and I won first turn for a 100% success for the weekend. With so far to go the Lancer had to Flank Speed [another obscene 10 or 11" advance] but had the bikes with him to score the objective. Actually I'm not sure what happened here as this is clearly Robin's end of movement phase. I'm guessing the Lancer did not make its charge as it's too far back but I did manage to kill something [I'm guessing a Dreadnought]. The Razorback coul
