Morannon expansion

The next batch of Mordor troops have been finished, as my ranks keep swelling fo the dark lord Sauron. And this time, it's in the form of more Morannon orcs from the Pelennor boxed set.The total amount of "upgraded" Orc warriors this time are 18 of the warriors, armed in a variety of ways.  The batch consists of 13 hand weapon and shield, 3 spear and shield and 2 with just basic spears, these add some serious rank and file numbers to the budding force.  Not to mention a nice boost of 147 points to the tally. What's more, they have been 'in progress' on the to do pile for over a year, as they came in the starter box, so they'll be a mark off for my Bingo as well...Now to really start painting up some characters to lead all my rabble on the field of battle...

Mordor Shaman

With the second tournament I want to participate in right around the corner, I needed some more 'generic' heroes for my Mordor force to participate. This due to the fact I painted up 700 points of playable forces this year and then some rank and file, but lacked characters to play the larger, 900 points the tournament would be in format. So to that end, I painted up some more magical support in the form of this shaman, a Minor hero in the list that comes with some good support casting to the Ringwraith I brought along in the force.I followed a colourscheme mix up of how I paint on the one hand my regular orcs, and on the other my Morannon's, to make him blend in in the force, while on the other hand still singling him out as a character. So that's another small addition in itself, but one that makes the whole force playable...Now it will all depend on one factor: the delivery date of the new kitchen...

Cirith Ungol Uruk-hai

Nothing to spectacular in this post to be honest, as these are the first Uruk-hai of Cirith Ungol that I painted up.Now, I keep "paint logs" for my models, to have references when I paint up more of certain troops in the future, and these models have been the first of it's kind as a try out for the colour scheme. In the future, I will be painting up at least some more of his brethren as well as their "leader" Shaggrath, but for now, these three are the ones needed for the Cirith Ungol battle company to be finished. For a "full" army, the list shares a lot of units with Mordor / Barad-dur / Angmar in the end, so if one builds a large army of Mordor, one can field one of the others just as well, as only some characters or a small unit left or right diversify the forces mainly consisting of orcs... And as such, these add 25 points to my Mordor force...

Goal Completed: 700 points Minas Tirith force

The next painting goal that can be scratched of the list for 2019, is the force of Gondor I wanted to paint this year.Yeah, that means a lot of silver and black has been used for all the rank and file...With the batch of warriors I posted earlier, this now means the number has been broken, and here is a small clip to have a look at the force and how it stands now (though one of the Faramir's, under the Rule of One, will get regular captain duty I guess).I'll be adding to this force for sure over the next year as I still have heaps of sprues and characters for it, but for now, it is put to the side for the remainder of 2019...

Mordor Standard Bearer

A small but essential addition to my Mordor force, the first banner for the army.Banners are incredibly handy in the game, and as such I just needed to have at least one to go with my rabble of orcs. While a basic warrior, albeit an expensive one at 30 points, this guy just will have to lurk at the back of the lines of orcs and provide that all to important bonus to my main line as a result. He will definitly be joining the force I will in all probability field at the tournament in november!

Gondor at War

The first campaign book released for the current edition of Middle-Earth Strategy Battle Game by Games Workshop, this details the epic siege of the White City, and the events on the fields of Pellenor in front of it.Containing not only new models and a trainload of scenarios, the book also introduces the Legendary Legions, a whole new set of army lists for the forces in Middle-Earth.It is produced as the other Games Workshop MESBG publications, with gorgeous painted model scenes alternated with movie stills from the trilogy, bringing the book really to life within it's 128 pages. After the brief Introduction, we get the History of Gondor section of the book, telling how Minas Tirith came into being after the fall of the old kingdoms founded by Elendil. Then the book moves to it's largest portion, the Scenarios section.  Over the course of 29 scenarios, most to be played on 4' by 4' tables, the events of the siege can be recreated, from the first assaults on Osgiliath over the Ride of the Rohirrim and the a

Reinforcements for the White City

This time, I have a big one for you, as I painted up all those warriors of Minas Tirith that have been on my painting desks for ages. The benefit of these noble soldiers, with their predominant plate armour and black clothing, is that they can be painted relatively fast when getting round to it.For this post, I did just that, and now my ranks are boosted by 6 swordsmen, 14 spearmen and 4 archers, largely expanding the painted up force with a solid 206 points. And as such, the 2019 goal of painting 700 points of Minas Tirith troops has been achieved as well...Next up as such for them, I will be needing to paint the necessary command models and characters to actually be able to field them, as well as a pile of movement trays to nicely line them up in the cabinets. But I guess my next paint project to finish won't be anything plate armoured x-D

Middle-Earth Ruins

A small scenery project I finished this week, a sprue of the EXCELLENT Middle-earth ruins from Games Workshop.Because with a tournament to be ran at the end of the month, every piece counts!I always loved these simple yet nicely detailed corner ruin from the Tolkien range, as it has a good height (for 28mm), nice texture and fine details like the arch of the tallest piece. The added benefit of finding them usually on BnB's for dirt cheap, make these some great thingies to expand collections of terrain. And they are really smooth and swift to paint!

SBG Issue 6 - Spring 2018

As I review this issue, I came to realise I'm slowly catching up on the current edition.  As time of writing, I'm waiting for issue 8 to arrive in the mail, while issue 9 of this fantastic fanzine is entering production and shouldn't take to long either to come out.And the theme of this issue is To The King, following up on the huge battle of Dale last issue, the central battle of this issue is the one in front of the gates of Erebor.Once again produced in high quality, let's flick through the magazine and see what tales of Middle-Earth are brought to us this issue, as we go through the editiorial and right to the first feature, the snippets page of SBG Towers.Of Dice and Men is the second part of the article series that details with the mathematical odds of combats, and how to best min / max those odds to get a preferable outcome in your fights.Cubes of Woe builds further upon this, with some of the most improbable odds rolls around the studio. The Dr's Corner returns this month, as it takes a look at ho

Rivendell Warriors

The latest figures to be finished for my games of MESBG, these guys are going to please Noshi.Because she tends to pick the elves to play with, and now she can have more basic troops to choose from. This time, I completed 5 more swordsmen and a single archer, to bring more balance to the 1/3rd ratio of options she can have and 47 points to her total available points.  The models are the plastic ones from The Last Alliance, hailing all the way back to the 2001 release of the game system, and still look the deal. Now to get her some spearmen painted up for her battle company...

Armies of The Hobbit

The companion book to Armies of The Lord of the Rings, this book is understandably a bit thinner.Because while the movies where just as long, the sourcebook was only a fraction of Tolkien's masterwork after all.Coming in at 160 pages (that's 80 less then it's companion tome), it does feature the same style and structure, filled with pages of gorgeous movie stills and miniature pictures. The largest section of the book is once again for the army lists of course, as it features 20 lists for you to play, divided into 13 Good and 7 Evil lists.  Now mind you, two of those are one figure lists though.  Wanderers in The Wild allows you to take Thrain the Broken only, while the Desolator of The North features only our beloved (and magnificent model) Smaug. Now, this book also features two of the strongest lists in the game, with on the one hand The Iron Hills dwarves of Dain (the chariot alone takes 4 pages of rules!!!) which are little tanks that can deal a lot of punishment, and on the other hand the Azog's

The Middle-Earth Hobby Bingo update 4

Hello again, and welcome to the update post the summer vacation. Not that that made a huge difference for painting time, as while work at work died down for a few weeks, work in the new place picked up...Still, I managed to scratch away something on the roster in this period! The first of those being "Build and Paint a Scenery Kit" in the form of this ruined corner set, a resin model that has been round for ages in my stash and now restored to be used at the club in events. Now, I do admit, for the next one I sort of cheated.  "Read The Hobbit or any book from The Lord of the Rings trilogy".  Fact is, I`ve read them already so many times, I wasn`t going to re-read them just for the Bingo.  But I did scratch it out as I finished The Fall of Gondolin recently.I also scratched of "Buy a Model and paint it within 48 hours of receiving it", as I received Lobelia (I LOVE that model) on the 9th in the evening as I opened a parcel from Italy.  Now, I have a bit of a reputation of being able to paint

Goal Completed: 700 points Mordor force

And then some...With the completion of the Orc warriors and the captain last week, I rounded out the goal I set myself, painting a 700 point force of Mordor. Now, the total will go even higher then that over the coming weeks and months, as I`m still working on more Morannon's, a shaman and a standard bearer, but then they will be put aside for this year.  Though after the move, the legion of the Dark Lord will grow a lot more, as I still have tons of them lying around...Now, to get the Ring back for lord Sauron...

The Fall of Gondolin - JRR Tolkien

The latest Tolkien book I devoured, the Fall of Gondolin, like Beren and Luthien before it, handles the tale from the Silmarillion, but also looks deeper in how the tale came to be through it's various iterations. And it has those gorgeous Alan Lee illustrations again. In the Tale of The Fall of Gondolin are two of the greatest powers in the world.  There is Morgoth of the uttermost evil, unseen in this story but ruling over a vast military power from his fortress of Angband.  Deeply opposed to Morgoth is Ulmo, second in might only to Manwe, chief of the Valar:  he is called the Lord of Waters, of all seas, lakes and rivers under the sky.  But he works in secret in Middle-Earth to support the Noldor, the kindred of the Elves among whom numbered Hurin and Turin Turambar.Central to this enmity of the gods is the city of Gondolin, beautiful but undiscoverable... until it becomes under siege due to an act of supreme treachery.  Balrogs and countless orcs assault the city, dragons burn down

Lobelia Sackville - Baggins

Bilbo's "favorite" relative, Lobelia was a not so much and rather rude Hobbit... but she showed remarkable courage when dragged to the Lockdowns. And I always liked the character, and loved the model.  So when I received her on friday afternoonm I immediatly began painting her.She was varnished 5 hours later, and based and flocked the next morning... so when I fill in the bingo, I can scratch off that 48 hours square as well...In game, she is a cheap 15 points addition to include in a Shire force, and while only a Minor hero, she comes with some great rules... especially if you can force her in the enemy at the moment he is about to brake.Just don`t keep her TO close to your own force either... they don`t like her ;-)
