'nids part 270 - Rippers - Big Build TO DONE!

On to basing up the Rippers I used some cheap filler to blend the ground in a bit more. Then I got some thin slate and crushed it up to make more of a fractured crust they'll burst through - more represetative of their tunneling rules. Now, the red stuff is some Martian Ironearth that i thought I could just paint on and get the fractured earth effect. But the paint had started to dry out and it went on more like peanut butter. I really didn't think it would crackle, so I panicked and blobbed on the PVA and slate. It obviously did crack and even pulled apart the filler as it shrank! But the slate worked out OK too.I may even give some of my older Ripper bases a little paint touch up when I get round to painting these - the older ones look a little tired and it wouldn't take too much effort just to bring them up to current standards, although I'm sure I'll live to regret considering it...I final coat of PVA and sand and they're built Wait a minute, look what's just snuck up as well. I couldn't just leave the

'nids part 269 - Rippers

I'm continuing my Big Build theme and finally plucked up the courage to do my next three Ripper bases in the style of the Forgeworld ones. As you can see they got built and are considerably bigger and more representative than my first press-mold prototype.I had been struggling to work out how to build these up, then I just started gluing chunks of hardboard to a 40mm base with the press-mold Rippers coming out of the base [plus one Warrior face pushing through the ground].All in I think there are 12 Rippers on the base, 4 of which are the plastic ones.  The next base I tried to use some of my Ripper side pieces glued to a vertical strut but it looked really odd and I ended up with the three heads running up the spin of the strut to try and hide it. Hopefully it won't be noticeable that those two halves are different.I'll need to blend them in with a bit of ground material as they birst through the dirt. I think there are 14 on this base. The last one, I think there are 15 or 16 on this, including 4 plasti

'nids part 269 - Rippers - Forgeworld inspired conversion

'nids part 268 - Genestealer cult - Aberrants - Big Build TO DONE!

I finally ordered some bases for the Aberrants. I didn't get the same ones as the rest of my GSC, something similar but some other urban rubble bases off ebay that were slightly more 'urbany' and slightly more 'rubbly'. I'm thinking they'll fit well with my Sanctum Imperialis ruins. The Hypermorph in particular looks very impressive on this raised bit of debris. The Abominant's base is the same one I have Deathleaper on, I'd had a spare for a long time. I'll be doing the banner as a Free Radical Collective 'sacred colours'. He fit so perfectly on it I couldn't not use it.I actually made the effort of pinning all these and super-gluing them, whereas all my other GSC models were just glued.I still have the two Ork Boy/Aberrant conversions to finish, they're partially built, just need green-stuffing to complete them.I've since undercoated these 8 so they'll be ready to paint their bases. I'll probably do that as a block, with the 5 Termagants, Warrior, Hive Guard and Redemptor Dreadnought. However, I don't want t

'nids part 267 - Tyranid Warrior and bits Big Build TO DONE!

After the sleep post I'm thinking my mojo is on the wain at the moment. I honestly cannot entertain that Dark Shroud and the Assassin isn't much more appealing. What's frustrating is I 'want' to do so much, I just can't bring myself to do it and I think fatigue plays a hand in that. However, I have felt the urge to build, even if the end result feels less productive despite the cool new model to drool over. So, after convertingthe  2 Warriors to Hive Guard I went back to my 'docked' Warrior and re-attached its tail and thought I'd base him on one of the bases I'd prepared but didn't fit the Hive Guard. I'll probably paint it alongside the gun-beasts for convenience. I fixed his tail with some greenstuff too.And I had a couple of Termagants and Hormagaunts knocking around that I just made into Devgaunts and based. I've 20 Devgaunts already, so this just adds to them, though I could do with another 5 so I cam make a full brood. I'll get these and the Warrior primed so I can paint them 'someday'.Whilst I was

'nids part 266 - Tyranid Warrior to Hive Guard conversion TO DONE!

I confess I'm back in avoidance mode at the moment, but I'm also going with the flow. The urge to build came over me and manifested as finally making 2 more Tyranid Warriors into Hive Guard so I can finally field a brood of 6. I originally did this conversion way back when and I've had enough parts to do these 2 for ages, although not all the same bits as last time. For these I'm using the blind Genestealer heads and I've some Tyrant Guard bits to create the armoured chest instead of the previous Termagant armour plates. I'd been delaying the kitbash because I was convinced one of the warriors was too good to be converted and I was sure I had a more damaged donor Warrior torso and legs somewhere. When I came to 'dock' the tails they were a little too short and predictably having docked them I immediately discovered the damaged torso was in exactly the same 3"x2" bits box. Anyway, the damaged one on the left was duly docked and I'll be trying to reattach the tail of the un-shown decent Warrior.Poses and basin

40k – Tyranid / Genestealers

Last post with Genestealer Cult forces! Twenty Genestealers are a nice addition the forces that you could see in many previous posts. I decided to keep the purple-orange pattern so army has a consistent color scheme. I am slowly succeeding in posting photos of all my older projects. As you can see, I try to interweave such entries with other, newer works of our studio. In the near future I would like to complete the Empire’s army to Warmaster and start the Death Korps of Krieg series. Commission painting services – minisforwar@gmail.com OR message on Facebook

1750pts battle report - Imperial Knights & Dark Angels v Tyranids

Otty had a free evening and wanted to arrange a game but that created a problem as I wanted to run my Knights for convenience but I was certain Otty's Tyranids would be on the road to a hiding if I did. Once again I looked at some of the narrative missions but as it turned out we went with the same mission I played with Liam - the Echoes of War mission in Vigilus Defiant called Forlorn Charge. It was Knights and Freeblades versus Ork Stompas, Morkanauts and Gorkanauts. It compressed the Knights into a 2'x2' corner with the 'Orks' creating their 'scrap city' and deploying first. There were also benefits for running a Fortification network and some additional stratagems. What we did was swap out the Ork elements for Monstrous Creatures. This wasn't too bad really as victory conditions were for my Knights to destroy all his Knights and buildings for a Major Victory, Minor if I killed more than were left alive and Defeat if it was any other result. Otty went with 2 Tyrannofex, Old One Eye and 5 Screa

'nids part 265 - Biotitan Tyranid Hierophant pt.18 - TO DONE!

Back in August I completed my Tyranid Hierophant but only shared my phone pics. I also took some pics with my digital camera but they required a fair bit of tidying up, specifically the ones on the white background. I'm not entirely sure if they're any better but I needed to upload them to the blog and finally got round to it.Not entirely sure what to say about these pics to be honest, it all seems a long time ago but like I say, they needed adding to the blog/gallery page so I'll just leave you to scroll through the pics. And the 'white' background shots which were a pain to take and clearly the lighting was insufficient and the choice of a glossy sheet of paper did not do me any favours...So there we have it, and all the links to the project [though some might be incorrect?].Part 1. | Part 2. | Part 3. | Part 4. | Part 5. | Part 6. | Part 7. | Part 8. | Part 9. | Part 10. | Part 11. | Part 12. |

'nids part 264 - Genestealer cult - Aberrants - Avoidance tasking

Having concluded that my Sanctum Imperialis should be verdi-gris I promptly ttried to avoid the task. Sadly I didn't even avoid it with any of my other priority projects. I spent one night making the torso of my Redemptor Dreadnought [more later] and the Aberrant Hypermorph. The next, night fully intending to paint I only went and made up all 8 of my remaining Aberrants. It says something when building until 1am is a more appealing task than painting that building green! These two are from the new Aberrant kit, but I think the power hammer dude has a Deathwatch Overkill head - they're more gormless lookingI went with 3 power picks, because with 13 Aberrants in total I planned to kitbash another 2 and the spare hammers seemed an easier proposition to convert, although I may just be completely wrong on that viewpoint.Having 4 Deathwatch Overkill models already I needed to do a couple of things to differentiate these. The first had its raised claw cut and tilted downwards. Then the second claw holding a skull wa

1750pts battle report - Imperial Knights & Blood Angels v Imperial Knights & Nurgle Death Guard - game 3

Double Trouble 4 and Alex From the Fang's doubles tournament replacing Blog Wars. 875pts with random pairings but all match-ups are Battle Brothers. Once again my recollection is pretty hazy so for the most part enjoy the pictures, the commentary will be secondary ;)  My first Blog Wars was Blog Wars 6 in June 2013, in that time I don't think Alex and I have ever faced or paired with each other. We've been on adjoining tables but with this our last chance to dance Alex twisted the strands of fate to put us both on the same table - Knight on Knight! I'm paired with Tom Capper again [paired with for DT3 and opposite for Never Mind the Blog Wars] he had his Blood Angels, Mephiston, possibly Astorath some Assault Terminators and Sanguinary Guard. Alex had his two Helverins and a Knight Warden and was partnered with Jonathan Lyness [regular attendee both at Alex's events and my own Birthday Bash] he had Nurgle and Death Guard - a Damon Prince, big blob of cultists, 2 Bloat Drones, unit of Pl

1750pts battle report - Imperial Knights & Blood Angels v Astra Militarum & Tyranids - game 2

Double Trouble 4 and Alex From the Fang's doubles tournament replacing Blog Wars. 875pts with random pairings but all match-ups are Battle Brothers. Once again my recollection is pretty hazy so for the most part enjoy the pictures, the commentary will be secondary ;) Game 2 and I'm partnered with Matt Longmore again [I'd been paired with him at DT2 and he was my opponent in DT3]. He'd brought his Blood Angels with 'Captain Slam', some Veterans, Death Company, a squad of Helblasters and some other units [THSS Terminators] that would benefit from reserve deployment. We were up against Andy Peat and his Tyranids [5 Carnifex, Old One Eye, a Neurothrope and a Biovore] and Lucas Rooney and his Astra Miliarum [2 Leman Russ, 2 Basilisks, a small unit of Bulgryns, a 'Command Point Farm' and mortars. We managed to win first turn and not lose the initiative. Matt had kept all but a unit of Veterans in the ruins above my Lancer and the Helblasters on the top floor of the ruins at the top of the board. I dep
