Ultramodern Wargaming

Wargaming Week 16/09/2019

Let’s start this Wargaming Week, covering the 9th through to the 15th of September. BLOG STUFF New post on the Gringo 40’s guys coming tomorrow! Just need to do the finishing touches to it. NEWS View this post on Instagram Working on a gaming table for next weekends release! We will be covering the build during the week. #spectreminiatures #spectreoperations #tabletopgames #wargaming A post shared by Spectre (@spectreminiatures) on Sep 12, 2019 at 6:26am PDT This week is a week of Spectre news! First of all, a massive tease from them – it looks like we have a big Spectre release coming this weekend seeing as they are assembling a new board for it. Including a hanger and a new pattern drone, it’s quite an interesting tease – guesses for what the new release is on postcards! Spectre also put out some releases. First up, the Contraband pack is the last set of objectives that were first available back at Salute. A pile of money and a pile

Wargaming Week 09/09/19

Let’s start this Wargaming Week, covering the 2nd through to the 8th of September. NEWS Empress has had a pretty busy week with a literal pile of releases! First up, the M113 ACAV is now available in 1/50 scale as part of the Vietnam range. Coming with the all the parts you need to cover it in machine guns and perfect for rolling around the hills and streets of Vietnam, this is a cool looking piece of kit. I can see plenty of use for it outside of Vietnam and in Ultramodern settings as well, especially if you take off a few machine guns. Following on from Spectre releasing some of their Kickstarter exclusives, it’s time for Empress to do the same! Unlike the frantic ebaying that happened for me to get mine, you can now just order your own NZ SAS figure from Empress from the limited quantities left. I really like the look of this guy – he’s perfect to add as a leader to other Empress SF figures. Get them while they are still in stock! Empress are also entering t

Wargaming Week 02/09/2019

Let’s start this Wargaming Week, covering the 19th of August through to the 1st of September. NEWS New releases from Spectre! This selection of four High Value Targets lets you add a really great character to augment a scenario. Each takes a different role, ranging from the Salesman gesticulating to a possible buyer, the Adviser perfect to lead your militia fighters while still remaining hands off, the General huddling the cold in his classic Russian coat and the Dictator in military regalia and with his cane. What’s quite interesting is where each of these figures are actually from. The General is one I haven’t seen before but the other three have been glimpsed. The Dictator was in one of the packs in the original Spectre Kickstarter (alongside the African Militia Warlord, African Rebel Warlord and a Sapeur themed leader) while the Salesman was one of the Kickstarter stretch goals. It took me a while to realise that the adviser had appeared first all the way back in 2015, appearin

Wargaming Week 19/08/2019

Let’s start this Wargaming Week, covering the 12th through to the 18th of August. NEWS First up, news from Spectre. Price rises hit all of us, and it looks like it’s now time for Spectre’s metal figures to go up in price. You’ve got until the 1st of September to enjoy the current prices. Additionally, they are working to improve their resin production, mainly to keep their stuff at better stock levels for as long as possible. View this post on Instagram New HVTs on the way soon! (Product will be metal, these are samples!) #spectreminiatures #spectreoperations #tabletopgames #wargaming #modernminiatures #modernwargaming A post shared by Spectre (@spectreminiatures) on Aug 14, 2019 at 4:00am PDT Of course, as soon I mention them quietening down, Spectre drops off this little preview onto Instagram. Two new HVTs for your tabletop. The figure on the right is a reproduction of the African general from the original Kickstarter, so this re-release might ex

Wargaming Week 12/08/2019

Let’s start this Wargaming Week, covering the 5th through to the 11th of August. BLOG STUFF No blog posts, but the first Forces List for the Bazistan Project is now up on the Patreon. Seeing as I already had them mostly planned out, I started with the Aden Defence Force. Being based on the British Infantry arrangement with a few tweaks, I’m looking forward to actually getting these squads on the table For the moment, everything on the Patreon is going to be free – so if you want to take a look you’ll find it here. Donating will let you jump in and comment as well as showing your support. NEWS No news! Everything has gone a bit quiet. PURCHASES No purchases! HOBBY Not much in terms of painting and gaming (mostly too busy finishing the article for the Patreon) but my order from Knights of Dice did finally arrive! After sucking air through my teeth at the VAT bill, this collection of MDF landed on my desk with a crunch. The apartment buildings are going

Wargaming Week 05/08/2019

Let’s start this Wargaming Week, covering the 29th of July through to the 4th of August. BLOG STUFF I published a new post on the Tabula Rasa villas from Knights of Dice! Overall I’m pretty happy with them, I just need to actually get them detailed up before painting. But once ready, it’s going to make fighting through some city streets pretty interesting. Become a Patron! Over on Patreon I posted an update on what I’ve been up to in regards to my ongoing project. I’m still working out the best method of presenting the information but I’ve also been getting some content finished off. The Aden Defence Force document is almost ready, I just need to finish writing some of the words around the actual useful information. NEWS It’s still summer! Apart from Spectre detailing a slight thermal issue with their resin production (it’s really warm), there is no news. PURCHASES Nothing! Still working through my current list of items such as eyeing

Wargaming Week 29/07/2019

Let’s start this Wargaming Week, covering the 22nd through to the 28th of July. BLOG STUFF Big news this week was that I ran a game! The second part of the adventures of Captain Amari, it was a bit of a monster, with that number of players (especially with most of them not knowing the rules). As always I ended up rushing the prep slightly but it was overall pretty damn fun. And now I just have to plan the next one! NEWS It’s summer so things are pretty quiet. However, Spectre Miniatures are running their usual summer sale, ready to take all your money while offering double points on everything. More importantly, Spectre has finally released the errata and points for V2. Both pdfs are available on the website, ideal for keeping games of Spectre flowing. The Errata fixes are mostly common sense, but the extra profiles for the Attack Helicopter are a great expansion of the OTA option. PURCHASES Well, thinking ahead to the next game in the campaign, we’re going to

Wargaming Week 22/07/2019

Let’s start this Wargaming Week, covering the 15th through to the 21st of July. BLOG STUFF First up we took a look at the War Zone Arabia buildings from Black Site Studios. Building these things was really exciting – they are some nicely designed kits, with interiors perfect for playing through. They will be getting their first taste of combat this week, and I can’t wait! Also hitting the table this week are the Contractor Ops team I finally painted up over my holiday. As I say in the article, these guys were great fun, ideal for a whole host of different roles and teams in modern settings. The Patreon this week also got a new post covering the Whys of the setting I chose for this project. The next post is going to detail the Aden Defence Force platoon and squad arrangement, adding some information to one of the new forces in the region. NEWS One bit of news: TTTS has a new release for their US Army range, bringing a 60mm Mortar team ready to provide your guys

Wargaming Week 15/07/2019

Let’s start this Wargaming Week, covering the 8th through to the 13th of July. BLOG STUFF Last week was my holiday so there are lots of things in progress but not much actually finished. I took some time to myself to plan and write for both this site and the Patreon. I’m currently writing up some details on the Aden Defence Force, in particular their squad composition. If you want more details when they are ready, they will be on the Patreon first (before being mentioned here). NEWS I wasn’t on the news beat this week but this piece grabbed my attention. A brand new rulset, Contact Front, coming soon and focusing on the conflict in Afghanistan. From reading the intro piece, it reminds me a lot of Fighting Season, with a focus on blending the platoon level action with greater consequences. You can grab more details at https://godseyegames.com/2019/07/08/gods-eye-games-to-publish-contact-front/ PURCHASES No purchases, still looking at the pile of stuff in front of m

Wargaming Week 08/07/2019

Let’s start this Wargaming Week, covering the 1st through to the 7th of July. BLOG STUFF I launched my Patreon project! More details in the post I published on Thursday but basically, I’m turning my scenarios and world building into something more suitable for release to the general public. I’m really excited about this, especially with the back and forth I’d love to happen with the Patron model. If you’re interested in joining the patreon, click the button below! Become a Patron! There is also a post coming looking at the Black Site Studios terrain. Photos are all taken, I just need to get the written side finished with my thoughts. NEWS Other than I started a Patreon for my Sourcebook project? Well, there are a few things. Empress are releasing a 1/50 M113 all ready for their Vietnam range. Coming with both the .50cal turret and the ACAV weapon mounts, the vehicle is perfect for rolling around Indochina. I’m very interested in picking

Wargaming Week 01/07/2019

Let’s start this Wargaming Week, covering the 24th through to the 30th of June. NEWS No news! Seems like everyone is away on holiday so the wargames market has calmed down a little bit. PURCHASES Nothing wargaming related! Still looking at the pile of stuff I need to paint and assemble. However, I did pick up two new releases from Osprey. “Armies of Russia’s War in Ukraine” looks like a handy primer for the situation in Ukraine while “The Australian Army at War 1976–2016” is another book from Leigh Neville (always a sign of quality) and covers the Aussies from Vietnam up to the modern day. I’m saving both for me week off but I’m really looking forward to both. HOBBY This week has been all about MDF buildings! I’ve been working my way through the Black Site Studios buildings. First up, we have the Turhan Imports build which is a nice, sensible addition to any ultramodern table top. And then we have the Temara Safehouse, which is a

Wargaming Week 17/06/2019

Let’s start this Wargaming Week, covering the 10th through to the 16th of June. BLOG STUFF New post this week (only just) looking at the Drone systems from Spectre Miniatures. I think none of these are required to play ultramodern wargames but having them lets you expand out what you can get up, giving you more options on the table top when building you scenarios. NEWS It was E3 so lots of gaming news. However, ultramodern wargaming wise, things are pretty quiet… For now. PURCHASES No purchases for wargaming this week – I’ve been upgrading my PC and then getting ready for my 1:1 scale wargaming event next weekend and so needed to get ready to operate. More details on all of that stuff next week! HOBBY Painting! First of all, I finished off the two drone operators this week. First of all the Tier 1 operator – I love these guys, especially because the painting is always so easy with the single block colours. In addition, I really like the details on

Wargaming Week 10/06/2019

Let’s start this Wargaming Week, covering the 3rd through to the 9th of June. NEWS First up in news, Empress has continued its modern day releases by bringing out a set of brand new elements for the Ultramodern Russian range. As well as the mortar team to bring them to parity with the other nations, there is also a tactical drone team (similar to the British one) and a two pack of EOD and signaller. The final pack is perfect for giving your forces an AT/AA capability, adding a MANPAD system as well as the RPG-29, an AT system designed for knocking out the more heavily armoured weapon systems on the battlefield. Much like the releases last week, this set are bringing the Empress ranges kicking and screaming into a situation where they can be used for a larger scale of battle. Also released this week by Empress was a pair of head packs which was very much a case of “something old, something new”. The Germans have got their older pattern of helmet, the classic PASGAT style seen

Wargaming Week 03/05/2019

Let’s start this Wargaming Week, covering… a long time. BLOG STUFF A new post went up last week! The battle report I played before I disappeared away to the US was a rather fantastic little game of Spectre Operations that did not immediately start off with a raging firefight. On the other hand, it shouldn’t have taken me three weeks to get it written up – however, on checking my stats it has already done really well. In bigger news, I’m back! My three weeks in the States was incredibly exciting (I don’t travel very much so even just going there was a massive change) and between the sitting in air-conditioned offices for meetings, I did manage to get out and explore the local area. Something I was very keen to go and do (and fitting for this blog) was hit the gun range and try out a few weapons. I quite enjoyed shooting as an Air Cadet and going again confirmed that if I had the opportunity, I would have another hobby to make me incredibly poor. NEWS O
