Warhammer Fantasy Battles
I painted a small unit of Castigators for my Stormcast army. These are the models that come in the Soul Wars set. It is a little frustrating that this is not a 'legal' size unit for pitched battle games. These are purchased in groups of three for pitched battles so you need one more or leave two at home. Oh well. This seems to be the way of building armies from the starter sets. These add a much needed ranged combat capability for my Stormcast army but in their first game I was not impressed. They are really designed to go against Nighthaunt armies (shocking) and are just marginally useful against others. I will pick up the easy build box at some point so I can feild either 2 units of three or one unit of six.The new Sacrosanct style Stormcast Eternal models are not my favorite. With the Soul Wars release and the appearance of the Sacrosanct models we now have Stormcast models with more robes such. What I like about the Stormcast models is the armor and now
I painted my first army specific Endless Spell for Age of Sigmar. This is the Everblaze Comet for the Stormcast Eternals. My friend, Randy, used one against me in a game last year and it was very effective. I knew it would be a must have for my army. I used it for the first time last weekend and it did well. I need to be very careful in how I use it as it is not a predatory spell so it cannot be moved. This model was super easy to build and paint. It only has three pieces including the cool molded base. I painted and flocked it in a couple of hours.
It has been a couple months since I have finished any painting projects. I have been busy working on several things I just haven't finished anything until now. This is my first unit of Bloodreavers for my Age of Sigmar Blades of Khorne army. My collection for this army consists mostly of figures from AoS v1 starter set. These figures are from that set. They are actually pretty nice figures. In game terms these guys are meat shields. These were painted to tabletop standards and as usual look better in person (and arms length away).
My Finish it February has finished strong with another neglected project completed. This time we have the Warhammer Arcane Ruins set. This is an old kit and I am not sure if GW still makes it. I have had it for many years. I am not entirely sure how I acquired it but I think this might have been for our Lord of the Rings SBG events and it just never got built. I assembled and primed this last year but for the last several months it has been sitting on the garage workbench gathering dust.I think my Finish it February concept has been a success. I completed 3 old, forgotten projects and make good progress on a 4th. I also finished one new project at the beginning of the month. Now I can start on something new with a clear conscience.
Finish it February marches on. The next neglected project completed are the AoS Shattered Dominion Objectives. I got these at the same time as the Soul Wars set last year. I built and primed them pretty quickly after I bought them but they then sat for months awaiting completion. These will be useful for all sorts of fantasy games and some will be used in Sci-Fi games too. I really like this set.Warhammer Age of Sigmar Shattered Dominion ObjectivesEnscorcelled ArmoryHallowed TombIconoclast AxeRealmvault KeySoul StoneThe Realm’s RansomTrove of Arcane Glory
I finished my third warband for Warhammer Underworlds. This time we have the Sepulchral Guard. I fell in love with these figures when they were first released, long before I have interest in this game. They were a joy to paint and their first game was very fun but very different. These figures will likely see table time in other fantasy games and Age of Sigmar. You can never have too many cool skeletons.Sepulchral GuardSepulchral WardenThe ChampionThe HarvesterThe Prince of DustPetitionerPetitionerPetitionerAs usual, the high resolution photos expose flaws that my old eye can't see in the real world. They look good on the table which is really what its all about.
This is my Steelheart's Champions faction from Shadespire. These guys have been painted to match my Stormcast Eternals army for Age of Sigmar. There are AoS stats for this unit so they will see time in both games. For Shadespire these guys have done well, winning the first two games. They seem like a very powerful faction.
I have been interested in Warhammer Underworlds: Shadepire (or just Shadespire as it is commonly referred to) for a long time but since it was set in the Age of Sigmar setting and I was not playing Age of Sigmar I never thought about trying it. But now I am all in AoS and with the new version of the game I decided I should get the Shadespire set before they become impossible to get. Tim and I tried the game out recently and we both really enjoyed it. I decided that with such a small number of figures I have no real excuse for not painting them up. Below if Garrek's Reavers, a Khorne Bloodreavers band that comes in the game. I went with a quick paint approach and I think they look good. The nice thing about this game is the figures are also usable in AoS as this same unit. So basically, I know have one unit for my Chaos army already done.Garrek's ReaversGarrek GorebeardBlooded SaekKasus the ChainedArnulfTargor
I knew from the beginning that my Nighthaunt army would have the Chainrasp Horde as the main Battleline unit. For this I needed lots of Chainrasps and I was lucky enough to acquire three starter sets of models.I now have 60 painted models divided into three 20-man units. These have been absolutely fantastic in every game I have played. These are a must have as far as I am concerned.
This is my 10 man (ghost) unit of Glavewraith Stalkers. When Soul Wars was initially releasted this was the unit that got my attention. The models were really creepy and unique and I was really excited to paint them and get them on the table. I still like the models, especially the easy build set, but in game terms they are a bust. I have used them in almost all my games and they never seem to earn their points back. I have used them as line troop and as flankers. Nothing seems to work. I understand why they are rarely used in Nighthaunt armies. Sadly I will likely retire them soon.
I have finished my Myrmourn Banshees for my Nighthaunt army. I have used them a couple of times but so far they have not done much. I see many players are running 12 of these and they might be more useful in a large unit. The models are really amazing. They are some for the best on the Nighthaunt line which is filled with amazing models.
The Chainrasp Horde is the heart of the Nighthaunt army, or at least, it should be. These are some really great figures and the units look fantastic. In game terms these guys are great. Keep some key heroes close and go to it.One controversy around these figures has to do with price an availability. Since the Nighthaunt army is an entirely new army initially this key unit was only available in the Soul Wars box set. This is not really an issue has GW always has a separate model set ready to go after a new edition release. Everyone knew that it was only a matter of time before you could buy these outside of the starter set. There was also an expectation, based on previous GW practice, that the individual set of Chainrasps would be different from the Soul Wars models. The expectation on the street was that this new kit would be 10 models and cost about $25-$30. It was a huge shock when GW merely repackaged the exact same models from the Sould Wars set and pr
These are my Spirit Hosts. These are a battleline unit for the Nighthaunts. I have used these in my first two games and I really like them. I can see why these are a popular option. The models, however, are a major pain in the ass to build. I thought after building them that I would never add any more to the army but after using them I am sure I will need more.
The next installment of my Nighthaunt army. This is the Guardian of Souls from the new Soul Wars box. Another really cool model and very useful in the game terms.
The first of my Nighthaunt army is complete. I started this project when the Soul Wars set was released. This is the Knight of Shrouds on Ethereal Stead. It is an absolutely amazing model. It is one of the beast I have ever seen and brilliant in its design.I have already used it in a couple of games and I find it indispensable. Stay tuned for more of this army.
