Warmachine Weekend

Daily Chronicle: Warmachine Weekend is now Warfaire Weekend

The other day the Facebook Page for "Warmachine Weekend" changed names to "Warfaire Weekend" and a lot of people were asking about this.  After this past "Warmachine Weekend", it was announced that Carl who has been running it from the beginning was letting go of "Warmachine Weekend" and there was a new team taking over the duties.  Chris and Gonzo stepped up to plate and will now be running "Warmachine Weekend", well actually "Warfaire Weekend".  Last night at 8:00 PM EST, Chris and Gonzo held a Facebook Live Q&A session to answer anyone's questions and explain a little bit about "Warfaire Weekend".In the picture, the first thing you may notice (besides the name) is that date of "Warfaire Weekend" will be November 8th-10th.  The past few years the event has been the first weekend of November, but it looks like for 2019 it will be the second.Onto the name change.  Having a fresh start for the event, Chris and Gonzo thought it would also be a perfect time for a name change, the nam

Warmachine Weekend Throwback Thursday

I swear I had a post ready to go, something about the latest beta test for new models, but when I woke up this morning and looked at my phone I saw that there was a blast from the past shining its way through from the foggy depths of memory and I felt I had to share. This was 2013 or 2014, the year Jason Flanzer won the Last Chance Qualifier and made it all the way through to the final match against Will Pagani only to be list locked with Grim Angus1 against Vladimir1.The picture, however, isn't from that final. This is round 1 of the Last Chance Qualifier, and that's me in the background looking over some kind of Trolls or Khador on my own ipad. And I remember playing my game and just happening to look up due to some sudden movement spotted from the corner of my eye.Flanzer had gotten up on the table to make measurements in the most comfortable looking way possible. Today he claims it was a Runes of War matchup into Haley2. How he remembers that, I'll never know, but I don't doubt that it's true.So when I find

Pre Releases at Warmachine Weekend 2018

One of the fun things about traveling to a convention is the early release product. Warmachine Weekend isn't any different, and this year they had some lovely goodies available before the local stores:Marshal General Baldwin Gearhart and Mr. Clogg - I've been looking forward to this release since I read about his backstory back in July , mostly because it's hilarious that he's one of the few Crucible Guard Warcasters who doesn't actually do alchemy. He's just in it for the cool guns they let him shoot.MacKay - She's a tank commander only she's on a train.Railess Interceptor - The train itself! Many people at Warmachine Weekend Plastic Vanguard- a resin release of a warjack that is notoriously terrible to assemble because of it's weird leg stance.Underchief Mire - Frog dude with headdress. I didn't pick any of that up. Why not? I wasn't going to paint or play with any of it that weekend. Last year when I got friends to bring me Northkin models at pre-release it was so I could paint them over the cour

Warmachine Weekend 2018 LCQ Round 4: Kolgrima vs. Sloane

Just like Kevin Chang, the last time I played Anthony Gibbs was at Lock and Load 2018, and just like against Kevin Chang, I felt like I stole a win.  We had played Sloane into Borka2, and the presence of a forest on the table and his odd trip 1 roll gave me scenario pressure and a win.So when Anthony saw the shooting gallery of a table that we drew at Warmachine Weekend, he got excited, won the roll, and gave me the side of the table furthest from a forest.According to observers, I may have screwed the pooch by not ambushing my Bears. It gave Sloane freedom to run all the way to the edge of the table and score a unit zone she might not otherwise have been able to score. My main reasoning was that I was going to try to use the Bears as a physical bunker for Rok, but then I failed to do even that.I had some deployment mistakes. Going first meant that I could load the krielstone with fury and run up safely. So reaching the cover of the forest was not going to be a problem. I didn't need to bother with cloud

Warmachine Weekend 2018, Last Chance Qualifier Round 2, Madrak1 vs. Mordikaar

Whenever I meet someone from Tulsa, they always make sure to tell me that they're friends with Clifton Cline, which immediately spells some trouble for me. The last time we played a game, Clifton and I, was back at the Adepticon before the transition into mk3, and Clif taught me just how terrible the Hunter's Grim's spell Mortality was for Trolls.Them knowing Clif means they're usually prepared for whatever I bring, or at least they've had some gameplay against a wide range of Trolls. On top of that, David was playing Skorne, a faction I hardly get to see. I've made half hearted attempts to unearth the models needed to play them and go through the motions of running through a deployment and identify possible threats lines, but then I decide, like I do when I try this with other armies, that they don't look like trolls so why would I put them on the table to begin with.David had two melee centric lists, so I felt fairly confident playing Madrak1, Thornwood Chieftain in Band of Heroes to utilize its warrior bene

Hotel Hobbying

My buddy Captain Chris likes to share with his friends photos of his hobby progress from various hotels around the country. Currently he has a boss custom Aiel army that he's painting, warriors with shoufas, and in the past he's also shared pictures of Chaos cavalry all done up while sitting miles away from home. Now, I love playing Warmachine. I've played this game for years and foresee playing it for years more, but when I'm at a convention I think I have limits as to just how many games I can play with any kind of sustained energy. Add to that an extra large table you might have to reach across and suddenly I'm straining my back. One of the draws of conventions I attend are early releases of models that I want to paint being sold directly by companies like Privateer Press (okay honestly it's mostly models sold by Privateer Press, but there are others). And since models can often be bought cheaper elsewhere after their regular release, both in shops and online, I find that part of the calculus behind pu

Warmachine Weekend 2018: LCQ Round 1- Kolgrima vs. Krueger2

Sabra and her husband came all the way from Arizona to play at the event, and she was really nice about the fact that I started out my morning not feeling well (just a little pre-con concrud, I think, mostly due to lack of sleep from my four year old waking up at 4AM in a strange place and freaking out).  She had Circle Orboros and I think I audibly groaned at the mention of Krueger2 in her pairing because I felt she had to select that list over whatever else she had (I can't even remember offhand) mostly because Chad Kaufman likes to beat me over the head with that warlock and then express disappointment when I can't beat the Stormlord fielded by someone else. Our game ran long and we were on an end table, so we got to see her husband and friends come by and watch us try to finish out a high scoring game without clocking out.Her version of the Bones of Orboros list used two Woldwardens, two Woldwyrds, and Megalith as her warbeasts, along with a Boneswarm paired with the pre-released model Underchi

Weekly Chronicle #43 2018

It was another decent week for me in the hobbies/gaming world, with getting a few models completed an a few games played.  I do not think I will be last year's Painting Points or Models Completed,  but that is also due to fact I do have a lot more games played this year than I have last year.  As of today, I have 68 games played this year compared to 31 games played for all of last year.  I have more than doubled my games played and there is still two months left in the year...who knows, maybe I will hit 100, if not, then that may be on my list of things to accomplish for 2019.  Going back to my point, with more games played, it equals less time to paint, but I am coming around to the point that I am OK with that. For modeling last week, it was mainly just Guild Ball models (actually looking back at the week, it was all Guild Ball models).  I was able to finish for the Blacksmith's Guild, 'Veteran Cinder' and 'Bolt', and for my Butcher's Guild, 'Veteran Gutter' was completed.

Weekly Chronicle #42 2018 (Warmachine Weekend is a No Go)

As the title of my post says, with only 10 days before Warmachine Weekend starts, it looks like it is a No Go for my son and I to attend this year.  My son informed yesterday afternoon that he could not get the days off from work to be able to attend.  If I really wanted to (and I still may, I have not fully decided) I may decide to go down by myself.  Driving 6 hours by myself is not a problem, it i just that spending that kind of money to play in only 2 "fun events" they have listed may not be worth.  I have been complaining all year that the lack of information from them is ridiculous this year, 10 days to go and they still do not have all the information updated.  The only thing leaning me towards still going is that I do have a few friends attending and one has told me that gaming is 24 hours (so I probably would get a lot of friendly games in).  The cost of my tickets for my son and I cannot be refunded, but I had estimated it would save me around $750 (hotel/gas/food) if I

Weekly Chronicle #41 2018

Last week was a really good week for me in terms of gaming, and at least getting something completed model wise. For painting, I was finally able to get 'Brun Cragback & Lug' completed for my Minions army.  I wanted these models completed for Warmachine Weekend, and mission was accomplished.  I should be all set for WMW model wise, but I may try and get one more model completed, we shall see, I may be putting some Guild Ball models up next on the painting table. For gaming, I would have to say it was one of the best weeks all year.  Last week I was able to play 8 games across 4 different systems.  Saturday my son and I had a games day at home, and yesterday I attended the Michigan GT for Warmachine/Hordes.  I will be breaking down those days into separate posts, either later today or tomorrow. One more thing to point out about Warmachine Weekend, the other day they posted in Facebook that next week they should have more info on events....."next week"... that only leave 2 weeks b

Weekly Chronicle #38 2018

Not much painting was completed last week, but I did start on another 10 'Warriors of the Dead' for MeSBG.  I am not sure if they will get completed this week, if anything I may have some time Friday night or Saturday morning, then I have to get ready for vacation next week.Gaming wise, I did manage to get in 4 games of X-Wing.  The first 2 games were just from the Starter Set, but the last 2 were full 200 point games.  Pictures from game 4 will be posted later today.Warmachine/Hordes: right now much going on with WM/H.  I still have a lot of models that need to be completed but just do not have the passion at the moment.  If I was more excited for Warmachine Weekend, then maybe.  Warmachine Weekend did finally release a small event schedule, but just a list of the tournament games, non of the fun events yet which is why I was planning to go.  Last night we had a personal setback with a broken dryer, so the funds allocated for WMW may have to go to the new dryer (we shall se

Weekly Chronicle #37 2018

Another week has flown by and at least I did manage to get a few models completed last week ('Nero' for Arena Rex and 'The King of the Dead' for MeSBG) and a game of Arena Rex played on Saturday night.  My son and I were hoping to also try X-Wing 2.0 after our Arena Rex game, but the organizing of all the new 2.0 items is taking longer than expected. This week we are hoping to get in some more games of Arena Rex with my friend TJ, and more than likely finally trying out X-Wing 2.0.  We'll see if time allows to get in another game of MeSBG.Warmachine Weekend is approaching fast in early November, and to be honest, right now I am not to excited about it.  I think the main reason is the lack of information from the event organizers.  Their website has been offline all year, and with 45 days left till the start of the event, there still is no information.  A few weeks back I even posted on their Facebook page, with no response.  It would be nice to see what events are happening so I k
