Weekly Chronicle 2019 #11

Week #11 for 2019 is now in the books and it was a "good" week, not bad, not great, just good.Wednesday night I was able to throw down my Navigator's Guild and get in a game vs Hunter's, and on Friday I was actually able to finish painting another model for my Butcher's Guild with the new 'Veteran Boar'.Then on Saturday I hosted my first ever Guild Ball Tournament down in South Bend, IN and I think it was very successful.  We had 15 players come out for the event, and I hope everyone had a good time. What is in store for this week? I have a 'Mataagi' for the Hunter's Guild that I think my son is going to want me to finish for AdeptiCon, not sure if it will be completed but it will be close, and then we still need to practice practice practice.  We have no major plans coming up this weekend, so it may be a perfect time to get in quite a few Guild Ball and X-Wing games in before AdeptiCon, we shall see....

X-Wing: Mini Duels Tournament Tray

Since I have gotten back into X-Wing with the release of 2.0 back in September, I have been looking around for some compact tournament trays to hold our movement sticks and ships while moving tables in between rounds. There were some European companies that had some very nice acrylic ones, but the ship trays were not yet updated to 2.0 (adding a medium sized ship), I noticed the same thing while looking for some made out of MDF here in the US.Then last week I decided to take another look at Mini Duels (I knew that I had made MDF trays and are US based) and came across a compact X-Wing try that now had slots for medium sized ships and was exactly what I was looking for.  So I decided to go ahead and order 2 sets (one for me and one for my son) and was hoping it would be here in time for AdeptiCon.Well shipping was quick and last Friday my trays arrived and I assembled/glued them that night.  Yesterday I decided to take some time and paint them up black like I did with my Guild Ball tray. The trays are

Weekly Chronicle 2019 #10

I just wrapped up Week #10 for 2019 and once again it has been a so-so week.Nothing was completed from the Painting Queue, but 'Veteran Boar' was assembled and some of the base colors are being applied.  My goal is to have him completed by AdeptiCon, but realistically it should not take that long, hopefully within the next week or two he should be completed.I was happy to get in 2 games over the weekend, another refresher for X-Wing (which was a difficult loss) and another Guild Ball game with a 'Veteran Boar' stand-in.This coming Saturday March 16th is my first event as a SFG Pundit and there will be a Guild Ball Tournament at Fantasy Games in South Bend, IN.There are still 2 spots remaining and you can signup up on Longshanks.I'll more than likely do a quick recap of the event on Sunday morning.Other than that, only 16 days till AdeptiCon 2019, and I think it will be a pretty good time.

Battle Report: X-Wing 3/9/2019 (Rebels vs Empire)

Yesterday morning  I was able to get in another practice game with my "Fat Han" list against my son (though it turned out it was not much practice with the Falcon).  I asked my son if he could fly a Tie list so I could see how well my 2 ship list would hold up against multiple ships.I made a slight change to my list from my last game, dropping R2-D2 for Perceptive Copilot. My "Fat Han" List v1.1:Modified YT-1300 Light Freighter - •Han Solo - 132Han Solo - Scoundrel for Hire (82)       Lone Wolf (5)       Nien Nunb (5)       Perceptive Copilot (8)       Millennium Falconn(6)       Luke Skywalker (26)T-65 X-wing - •Wedge Antilles - 66   Wedge Antilles - Red Two (52)       Outmaneuver (6)       R4 Astromech (2)       Shield Upgrade (6)       Servomotor S-foils (Closed) (0)Total: 198/200Son's Empire List:TIE/ln Fighte

Weekly Chronicle 2019 #9

We are into the first week of March and the first quarter of the year is almost over and I seem to be behind in my gaming and way behind in my painting. All honesty regarding  the painting, I am actually okay with that.  My main game that I am playing is Guild Ball, and my favorite Guild (Butcher's) and my son's Guild (Hunter's) are all completed (for now).  My Butcher's Guild will be receiving 'Veteran Boar' this week, and shortly there after I should be receiving 'Steeljaw' for the Hunter's, so both of these models will then hit the painting table.  I then need to decide what I am doing with the Cook's Minor Guild, I really want to have 'Roast' and 'Cinnamon' completed so they can play with the Butcher's, but then I might as well get the rest of the Cook's completed.Last week was not actually too bad in both departments.  I was able to paint up the 3D Goals we received from Bourbon Trail Open IV, and I was able to get in games of Destiny, X-Wing and Guild Ball last week.  More t

Daily Chronicle: "NOVA Open 2019" Registration Is Open

This past Friday night at 8:00 PM EST, registration has opened for the 10th Anniversary of the NOVA Open on August 29th - September 1st 2019.You can register for the convention by visiting the NOVA Open Store.Last year my son and I attended and played in some of the Warmachine/Hordes events (Team Tournament / Breakfastmachine) and then also played some open gaming.  This year, the plan is to play in 3 different gaming events.NOVA Open is host to one of the largest Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game events of the year, the Lord of the Rings GT and the Doubles event.  We wont be playing in the GT (a 2 day event), but my son and I will team up for the Doubles event on Friday.  Seeing how we do not play the game much, it will just be for a fun time to play on all the beautiful themed tables that the NOVA Open displays. On Saturday, we are signed up for the X-Wing Grand Championship Heat 2, where the top 32 players of the day will move on to Sunday's final event, more than likely it will not be us, bu

Battle Report: X-Wing 3/2/2019 (Rebels vs Rebels)

WOW, this is actually post #1000 dating all the way back to 2009!It has been awhile since I last played X-Wing, and I really need more practice before AdeptiCon comes up on us in a few weeks, not that I am going to get in a win at AdeptiCon, but it would be nice to fly my ships knowing the rules. This morning I woke up my son early (early for him) and we got in a game of X-Wing in before he left for work.  I have been basically flying 'Scum & Villainy' since the release of X-Wing 2.0 (and I really do like Boba Fett), but I decided to go try a "Fat Han" list and see how I like it.  I used to like flying a "Fat Han" back in X-Wing 1.0, or a double YT-1300 lists, but the norm in X-Wing 2.0 has been to fly 3+ ships, well let's see how this new "Fat Han" list works. My "Fat Han" List:Modified YT-1300 Light Freighter - •Han Solo - 132Han Solo - Scoundrel for Hire (82)        Lone Wolf (5)        Nien Nunb (5)        R2-D2 (8)&nbs

Weekly Chronicle 2019 #8 (Recovery & Prep)

Bourbon Trail Open IV is now complete and it is time to concentrate on my upcoming tournament on March 16th, and AdeptiCon which starts in 30 days.  BTO IV was a good time, I do wish I could have played one more game, but the feeling after Round 3 was pretty bad.  I wish more players can play for fun...do not get me wrong, I understand this was a tournament, but we were both in Round 3 with a 0-2 record with no chance of finishing in the Top 5, I think at that point, players need to dial down the competitiveness a bit. There was also a post in the Guild Ball Facebook Group that a British player noticed that about half the players had dropped out from BTO IV and made a comment how he sees a lot of Americans doing this at events and that it is disrespectful of the TO.  I do not believe this shows disrespect, at least I do not do it for disrespect, I go to these events for the ambiance of the event (this one was in a Bourbon distillery).  I am happy to play my 3-4 games in the day and then I l

What happened there?

Stewart turned up on Saturday morning for our planned wargame weekend, first up was several games of X-Wing then a War and Conquest game to refresh the rules for April (see below). X-Wing is undoubtedly Stewart's game and I like to think WAC is mine, pride cometh before a fall.I ran four X-Wings in the first game as I had had success with this at the club and was quietly confidentish, I completely mucked things up and on one turn I did not even get a shot off, I was then taught how to really play the game, first blood to Stewart. In the second game I took two B-Wings, these fly like bricks, an X-Wing and an A-Wing, Stewart had the Hounds Tooth a big ugly monster of a ship, but one which never seems to have much success, especially at the club, another two ships escorted the beast. I got everything right this time and got a very good win destroying all the enemy, my first ever win against Stewart, honours even. For our final bash we both had Imperials and both had two Tie Defenders along with one more ship, I

Weekly Chronicle 2019 #7 (Week of Bourbon Trail Open IV)

Seven weeks into 2019 and honestly I am way behind on what I had set myself out to complete for this year.  I have only played 6 games of Guild Ball, 4 of Destiny and that is it, I only finished painting 1 model and that was 'Rookie Seenah' way back at the beginning of January.  I had really expected to have more games of Guild Ball in by now, along with a few of X-Wing.  AdeptiCon is coming next month and I have no practice games of X-Wing in, I think next week it will be time to sliding in a game a week. This past week was almost a pretty pathetic week for me, but yesterday made some of it back up.  I was suppose to play in a Guild Ball event on Saturday up in Grand Rapids, but some personal business I had to get done had me driving to Chicago for the day, there went 4 games I could have played.  Luckily yesterday evening my son and I were able to squeeze a practice game in (short report coming later).  Also yesterday morning I actually did a lot of work on 'Veteran Calculus' an

Da, da, da, dadada.

Another dark and dingy night for Club Night, although I notice the days getting that bit longer, snow on the hills has gone but it is cold.Alex who was new to X-Wing asked me for a game this week, as he also flies Imperials I thought I would take the Rebels for a change, they don't get out of the box very often. I wanted to keep it simple so looked around online for some inspiration and decided to go with four named X-Wing pilots, nothing fancy but the X-Wing is a pretty decent all round fighter as you would expect. The Empire turned up with three Tie Interceptors led by Soontir Fel, apparently he is an Ace pilot, I don't know that much about the Star Wars universe but the card is a good one. I started off with an advance and a turn to meet the enemy, I survived the salvoes which came at me and started to return fire, I had all my ships target lock one Interceptor and ganged up on him, at the end of that turn he was space dust. The rest of the game turned into the same routine, my ships kept together and the s

Weekly Chronicle 2019 #5

While being on vacation last week, I missed out on posting "Weekly Chronicle #4", there actually was not much to report, and there is not much to report for last week.I finished the month of January only playing 4 games of Guild Ball, which is a lot less than I had hoped for.  I am really hoping February will be a better month.  I do have a semi local Guild Ball event I am planning on attending in 2 weeks, and then on the 23rd of February is the Bourbon Trail Open IV down in Kentucky, so between those 2 events and practice games for those events, I should hit double digits this month for Guild Ball games. That still leaves me needing practice games for X-Wing.  I am signed up for the X-Wing Championships on AdeptiCon Friday (though I will probably lose my first 2 games and be eliminated), but I still need to refresh up on my lists.  There was an update last week for the points costs of the ships, so now I have to go through my lists and see which I want to play.  I have been leaning to
