X-Wing

Club, books and stuff

Easy night at the club, X-Wing and as I had lists prepared a la Blue Peter I only had to pack up and get out the door, I did notice this week how dark it was as I got on the road, Winter is certainly on its way. Once at the club without much ado I just chose a list and set up the spaceships, it was only as we commenced the game I found I had brought a knife to a gunfight, I got these lists from the so called experts on an X-Wing Forum, OK I am not the best star pilot but how anyone can win with this nonsense escapes me, mea culpa.Simon usually has either good luck or bad and last night his shooting and saving was the former, I did OK but nothing spectacular, my flying bricks, two B-Wings, with sieve armour were a liability as Simon's gunnery took them apart. The game was leisurely and as time approached I ran up the white flag, I had two ships left one of which was going south as soon as the enemy looked at it and I did not fancy my lone X-Wing's chances against Simon's two. I will have to learn to take the t

X marks the spot

A bit late on the keyboard this week, been a bit lazy of an evening, well, not lazy just got back to painting and have hit on an excellent TV series which needs to be watched and not painted to, more below. X-Wing at the club this week as Simon has upgraded to Version 2, he fielded a Scum and Villainy force while I sorted out two Rebel and one Imperial force as I thought the games would be short and sharp with me on the receiving end.The game kicked off with me flying four X-Wings and the bad guys turning up with a Y-Wing, two Headhunters and a Firespray, I kept my squadron close and their first salvoes took out the Headhunters who seemed to rashly put themselves in harms way without the support of the other two ships. A really good and unusually effective start to one of my games, I now turned on the Y-Wing and she too hit the deck or whatever passes for the deck in space. I had now lost one of my X-Wings but was still well ahead as I turned on the largest ship on the table. Simon now led me a merry dance as

Red Leader, Red Leader, Cheaper Leader

I really like X-Wing for recreating the star fighter conflicts from the Star Wars universe. It’s a fun game and one that can be played with a few ships or a fair few. I am sticking with the original rules, despite the fact that there is a new edition out now. The original boxed set comes with three models. I wanted to get some reinforcements for both the Empire and the Rebel Alliance, but wanted to get some of the standard models, having already got specialist models such as the Millennium Falcon, B-Wings, A-Wings and fair few of the TIE specialist fighters. So first on my list was the X-Wing. With a list price of £15, I have managed to get one on Amazon for £8.79, which I thought then was a bargain. I had noticed that the original boxed set on Amazon was sometimes sold at a discount, but I don’t have the time to continually check Amazon for those price fluctuations. Well just because you don’t have the time, doesn’t mean it can’t be done. I now use a service called Keepa which has an extension that can be i

Weekly Chronicle 2019 #35 (NOVA Open 2019 Recap)

Well this one is going to be a little long since I will be recapping some of the highlights of this past weekends NOVA Open 2019.First off with our standard weekly recap of models completed and games played while at home.....none....OK that was easy, onto the recap of NOVA Open 2019.Thursday 8/29Thursday was suppose to be our travel day and relax when we get onsite, but at the last minute we decided to sign up for the Guild Ball Regional Cup event that started at 12:00 PM, so that meant we would have to leave late Wednesday night in order to arrive in time.  The drive was very uneventful (which is great) and arrived onsite shortly after 10:00 AM.  Once we got situated with valet parking and checked-in with the NOVA Open, I got a text saying that our room was already ready which was great as we were able to drop off a few our items.  Once we did that, we headed downstairs to the ballroom floor and proceeded to the Steamforged Games room and checked in or the event.During the pairings of the Roun

Weekly Chronicle 2019 #34 (Week of NOVA Open 2019)

Post #285 for 2019, what does that mean? In the 10 years I have been writing this blog, 285 posts in one year sets a new record for me (last year was 284, previously it was tough to hit 200).  There may not be that mean blog readers anymore, but for me, the blog keeps me motivated in the hobby and a good diary of the models/games I have completed and played.  With 4 full months left in the year, there is plenty more reading to come.First, lets start off with our quick usual weekly recap, this past week was not the greatest, but at least items did get completed and a game was played.  I managed to complete my Limited Edition 'Shank' and 'Tenderiser' for my Butcher's Guild which can be played for the Cook's Guild, and we did manage to get in a practice game of Guild Ball of Friday night (which I lost to the clock to again).  I was hoping for another practice game yesterday, but that did not happen and I will have to use Thursday at NOVA Open as my practice day.On the drive to DC and back, I

Even Stephen's

Although I bemoan my lack of wargaming on reflection I do OK, I just would like to do more, I have just been through to Stewart's for some X-Wing action to balance the scales somewhat as he is happy to play historical most of the time here at Casa Anderson. Coming up along with Club nights is a War and Conquest Sunday, it was to be a weekend but I cannot commit next month to two days, so Mark Walker is making the long trip up from Leicester, a keen player considering the state of the roads. I also have Stewart coming over for Chain of Command, so not bad really. My mate Billy in Scotland has built himself the wargaming equivalent of the Wolfschanze in his garden and is open for games, I was hoping to get up this month or next but real life has interfered, however it is always an option, maybe in October.Enough, what about the games, on arriving my grandson James was in the huff as he was not being allowed to play with Dad and Papa, so I offered him a game if he put a smile on his face, no, larger boy. Weekly Chronicle 2019 #33

Week #33 for the year was a little slow on the painting front (2 models) and average for gaming (2 games).Real work has been busy this month so painting has slowed just a bit, but I still managed to get 2 models completed for Batman Miniature Game, 'The Merciless', and 'The Red Death'.  I think once I get back from NOVA Open in two weeks, I will take a look at what we have fr BMG and work on my Painting Queue for them and prioritize what I want to paint.  I still have a mix of Guild Ball models I would like to get completed so those will be done in between to break up the repetition of painting BMG.For gaming this past week, we got in another practice game of X-Wing to get ready for NOVA Open (and I am STILL undecided on my list that I am playing).  The last 2 lists I tried both netted me a victory.  Now it is a matter do I want to play Rebels or Scum.Yesterday afternoon we also finally gotten in a practice game of Guild Ball, it has been awhile since we last played (early July) and we wer

Daily Chronicle: 2 Weeks Until "NOVA Open 2019"

NOVA Open 2019 is only 2 weeks away and the only practice we have gotten in recently was for X-Wing, and I am still undecided on my list.  Back when I first announced NOVA Open 2019 in January, our thought was to play Bolt Action and Middle-earth SBG.  We have not played a game of MeSBG since last year and Bolt Action never made their schedule of events.Last year we went and played Warmachine/Hordes all weekend, seeing how we have not played that game much (at all this year), we had signed up for this years NOVA to play Guild Ball and X-Wing.  At least with Guild Ball we started the year off really strong and attended events for the first four months of the year, and now with the recent errata release on Monday, the excitement is coming back.  X-Wing 2.0 came out late last year and we have been occasionally playing that game to keep the rules fresh (nearing on 20 games for the year) so we thought that would be a fun event to play.So our schedule for NOVA Open weekend is:Thursday Evening: S

Weekly Chronicle 2019 #32

So Week #32 was another average week for me regarding painting and gaming.  5 models were completed last week (2 for Guild Ball and 3 for Batman Miniature Game) and I was able to get in 2 more practice games of X-Wing for the upcoming NOVA Open.I played a X-Wing list that was really happy with last night, but I think I have 1 more list that I would like to try out before I make any decisions.  If I do not get a chance tonight (more than likely not with next section of news) then hopefully this Thursday night. That now leaves with the big news coming from Steamforged Games later today regarding the new errata for Guild Ball coming out.  More than likely I will be spending my evening getting all the cards ready for printing, and from the SFG blog post, it sounds like there will be a lot of changes.Once those changes get released, my son and I will need to get a few practice games of GB also before we leave for NOVA, it has been awhile since we last played and need to get refreshed again.I am not s

Weekly Chronicle 2019 #31 (GenCon Recap)

GenCon 2019  has come and gone now, and yesterday was a good time, but before we get more into that, just a quick usual weekly recap.Gaming was pretty decent last week with 3 games of X-Wing played, we are preparing for the NOVA Open Grand Championship at the end of the month, so we are trying different lists until we find one that we like.  There will be a lot more X-Wing the rest of the month as I am still undecided on my list.  BMG games will have to take a back seat until we get back from NOVA, we may and try to squeeze in one though for the month.Painting was also really good last week, I was able to complete another 6 models for Batman Miniature Game, though I do not have any more models currently prepped and ready to go so it may be a bit before I post anymore BMG models, which is OK since I have two Guild Ball Rookie models I need to also get completed or NOVA Open and they will be next in my Queue.Games Played: 3Models Completed: 6So now onto GenCon 2019.The day started pretty early fo

Weekly Chronicle 2019 #30

Week #30 was not a bad week at all, not many games were played, but more painting did continue.  I was able to complete my 2 lists that I want to play at the 250 Rep Friday tournament at Renegade Open, at least my lists for now.  The Renegade Open is still about 4 months away, so ideas my change, new models may entice me to change lists, but if all that fails, I have my backup plans.I was out of town for most of the weekend visiting the Mighty Mac up in Northern Michigan so not much gaming was played this week, but we did manage to get in a game of X-Wing yesterday afternoon.  I was trying a different Rebel Alliance list and my son was trying out the Galactic Republic for the first time.  My Rebels ended up winning 327-73, and I am seriously considering that list for the NOVA Open next month.Might MacSo that brings me to the NOVA Open at the end of next month where my son and I will be playing in the X-Wing Grand Championships on Friday and the Guild Ball Regional Cup tournament on Saturda

Weekly Chronicle 2019 #29

At least this past week I did get in a couple of games compared to 0 the week before, it was not a lot, but a game of X-Wing on Saturday night and a game of Batman Miniatures Game yesterday afternoon.  This coming week is not looking to good for gaming with being out of town this coming weekend, and on my free day Sunday, it may be some chores, but we'll see what happens.Painting last week was great with 9 models posted on this blog and a few more ready to go for this week. The setup for Sunday's BMG game, Joker came home to the circus.Games Played: 2Models Completed: 9

Weekly Chronicle 2019 #28

It has been a pretty busy day today with "real" work that I almost forgot about my Weekly Chronicle.Unfortunately the gaming side of the hobby was at lull last week with 0 games played, we had to spend time outside of the house over the weekend (bug fuming) that it did not leave much time to play.  Hopefully this week we should be able to squeeze in a game, even if it is for X-Wing.The painting side was a really good week.  If you back at my blog posts, you will see 8 models were completed, and they were all for the Batman Miniature Game. This week I have a few more BMG models, then I need to decide what Crew I will be tackling next.Games Played: 0Models Completed: 8

Weekly Chronicle 2019 #27

I would have to say that Week #27 was a pretty decent week for me.  With the 4th of July Holiday on Thursday, it allowed for a couple more games to be played and I was able to get quite a few models completed.First off I finished the last 2 models from the "Bane: Venom Overdrive" Bat-Box with 'Sharp Shooter' and 'Elite Op'.  Once that Bat-Box was completed, it was time to move onto my new "Dark Knight Rises Game Box" and I started on the Brave and the Bold models first, completed all 3 'Agent' cops and 'Alfred Pennyworth'.  This week we will finish the remaining 2 models, 'Catwoman' and 'Batman' and move onto the League of Assassins/Bane models.Onto some gaming, 4 games were played this week, which has been the most in a long time.  On Thursday we played a game of Guild Ball (which I barely squeaked out a victory with a few seconds remaining), followed by a game of X-Wing.  Both of these games we will be playing at the NOVA Open at the end of August, so we need to start and get some m
