One of the benefits of moving back to the Midwest a few years ago was the ability to drive to AdeptiCon each year, I've been to AdeptiCon in the beginning, a few events in the middle and 2019 will mark 3 years in a row again for me.AdeptiCon is not until March 27th-31st, but every November before, registration for the events opens with as much information they can provide for the event (some other organizers need to take note...WMW). Well this year is no different and registration will open this Sunday November 19th. The good people who run AdeptiCon also give us a sneak peek at the list of events at least a week beforehand and this past weekend the site went live with the majority of their events. You can click HERE for the event preview. The day the preview site goes live is a happy day for most of us as we can start planning our AdetiCon weekend, sometimes there is a little disappointment if the events you want to play in overlap with each. For AdeptiCon 2019, the list of events I was think
This past week was a complete opposite of my previous week. Previously I painted 5 models and played 1 game, and this past week it was painting 1 model and playing 5 games. I wish I would have painted more, but I knew I was getting ready for my first Guild Ball tournament and I did not want to leave anything unfinished on the painting table. What I did complete last week was 'Zarola' for the Hunter's Guild.Currently I have 2 models up in my Painting Queue with plenty in my backlog. A lot of the times I will re-arrange my queue based on what I feel like painting, but I think I really need to get these next 2 models completed. I have 'Hearth' for the Blacksmith's Guild and 'Veteran Hearne' for the Hunter's Guild listed as next. If I complete these 2 models, then both of these Guilds will be fully completed, and that is a nice feeling of accomplishment. Then I need to think about what will be next, part of me is thinking the Falconer's Guild (starting with the 2 models t
I’ve been playing X-Wing 2nd Edition for a few weeks on Vassal now. I finally put some ships on the table at a Quickfire Tournament. These are regularly hosted by the Moldy Crows at Athena Games. Games are comprised of 65-minute rounds where, despite flying some absolute nonsense, I finished 4th after going into the final round with a chance to win. The one thing that has stood out for me at present is the wide variety of lists out there. I have not flown against the same list once. After the list spam-fest of 1.0 this is a fantastic breath of fresh air! However, the game is still very young. Everyone has an abundance of new toys and ideas to mess around with but this Wild West Meta is fun! I know, “fun” is a dirty word in tabletop circles, but it’s entirely true. Would it not be great if people stopped caring about what the Meta is and started having fun? I know this concept is not new, last year our current world champion started the #whatmeta? trend which mixed things up for a while
As the title of my post says, with only 10 days before Warmachine Weekend starts, it looks like it is a No Go for my son and I to attend this year. My son informed yesterday afternoon that he could not get the days off from work to be able to attend. If I really wanted to (and I still may, I have not fully decided) I may decide to go down by myself. Driving 6 hours by myself is not a problem, it i just that spending that kind of money to play in only 2 "fun events" they have listed may not be worth. I have been complaining all year that the lack of information from them is ridiculous this year, 10 days to go and they still do not have all the information updated. The only thing leaning me towards still going is that I do have a few friends attending and one has told me that gaming is 24 hours (so I probably would get a lot of friendly games in). The cost of my tickets for my son and I cannot be refunded, but I had estimated it would save me around $750 (hotel/gas/food) if I
This afternoon before my son had to go in to work, we were able to get in a game of X-Wing. All of X-Wing 2.0 I have been flying with the Scum, but today I wanted to change it up a bit and try a Rebel fleet. I came across the list used to win the Michigan GT last weekend, so I thought I would give it a try.*upgrades not listedRebel (A) (199) (me)Wedge AntillesJan Ors"Dutch" VanderBlue Squadron EscortRebel (B) (197) (my son)Wedge AntillesBlue Squadron EscortBlue Squadron EscortBandit Squadron Pilot Rebel (A)Rebel (B)I really do like the list alot, but it just was not the day for me. My 'Wedge' was knocked out first and then I retaliated and killed his 'Wedge'. Next 'Jan Ors' got killed and I was down 4 ships to 2. I could not come back and clock ran out on us. Rebels (A) killed 134 points, Rebels (B) killed 179. Scoring per the tournament packet would give my son 245 points to my 155.I could use more practice with the above list, but I really enjoy flying my Scum.
So it’s been a very exciting couple of weeks for X-Wing 2nd Edition. The new rule set was followed this past weekend by two huge tournaments, further injecting new life and excitement into the game. The UKTC and The Coruscant Invitational, won by The Weekend Warlords (again!) and Tom Forstner. Congrats to those guys for being top dogs amongst some of the best competition in the world. This means along with play testing on Vassal, there has been a plethora of live streams for me to pour through to help me make my decision as to which faction to invest my hard earned Intergalactic Credits with. Combined with my excitement for Disney’s big Mandalorian News this week quite frankly there is only one way forward for this guy in X-Wing 2nd Edition, and that is Scum and Villainy! Decisions Have Been Made With so much choice out there this was a decision that changed 3 or 4 times over the fortnight. Even at one point saying “actually, I’ll wait for The Resistance stuff before I join in”
First off I need to say that this is post #200 for the year. It has always been a goal of mine since I started this blog back in 2009 (and my previous blog in 2008) to be able to write 200 posts in one year. I was just shy of 200 back in 2010 with 192 posts, and last year I was on a decent pace to hit 200, but the last 2 months of year I really slowed down and finished with 171. Since I have played a lot more games this year, this helped with my post counts since I try and do a quick Battle Report after each game (I always do not, but I try). This past Saturday, my son and I had a day of gaming here at home. Originally the plan was for our friend from Arizona (now living in Indiana) was going to come up and join us for the day, but unfortunately he was not able to attend, and since my son already requested the day off, we continued on with the games.First game of the day was X-Wing 2.0. The original plan was to play a big 500 point game and give us a 3 hour time limit, well by the
Back at the end of September I ordered some new 2.0 Movement Templates from Applied Perspective and they finally arrived yesterday afternoon. I have ordered from this company once before back in 2014 for X-Wing 1.0, but with X-Wing 2.0, new templates are needed. The newer templates have a center line going down each of the templates. This center line is used for special movements like Barrel Rolls (so you can easily line up the template with the base of your ship). There is nothing wrong with the templates that come with the Core Set, it is more of the coolness factor of having them in acrylic. I ordered an acrylic green set for my son, and blue for myself. The durability of the acrylic over the cardboard will also be better over time. Now I have to go an finish peeling the rest of the templates.
Well we are now into the month of October and the final quarter for my Painting Queue. My 3rd quarter was not as good as my 1st, but much much better than my 2nd quarter. I am out on vacation this week so not much will get done model wise nor gaming, but when I get back and I need to take a look at my Painting Queue Backlog and move some items over to the Queue. When I get back from vacation, Warmachine Weekend will be less than a month away, and I need to decide if my son and I will still be attending. The lack of information from the organizers is really disheartening and the cost of a new dryer for the household tapped into the slush funds. If I decide that we are still attending WMW, I need to take a look at my models and see what needs to be completed, or I may be alright with what I already have (I'll need to check with my son too in case he needs any Cygnar completed). For last week, I was able to complete another 10 models of 'Warriors of the Dead' (half way done with my Dead of
It’s finally here. In what seemed like an eternity of waiting, X-Wing second edition the next instalment of Fantasy Flight Games’s flagship game has hit the shelves and tables around the globe. When X-Wing second edition was announced at FFG Worlds earlier in the year the Hype Train shot out of the station and I was sitting in First Class. X-Wing was the first tabletop game I went all in with. I loved Star Wars and I loved the simplicity of the game alongside the fact that you did not have to paint the models. This, in-particular, was also a huge draw for me. I got heavily involved in the game via tournaments, blogs, I joined a team and regularly took part in the Athena Games Stream Team. I’d never considered myself a top-tier player. I was closer to a mid-carder who had potential on the right day and the right list to nick a tournament win here or there. I’d attained the capability to beat anyone scalping store champs, regionals champs and national champs alike. However, I just did n
Not much painting was completed last week, but I did start on another 10 'Warriors of the Dead' for MeSBG. I am not sure if they will get completed this week, if anything I may have some time Friday night or Saturday morning, then I have to get ready for vacation next week.Gaming wise, I did manage to get in 4 games of X-Wing. The first 2 games were just from the Starter Set, but the last 2 were full 200 point games. Pictures from game 4 will be posted later today.Warmachine/Hordes: right now much going on with WM/H. I still have a lot of models that need to be completed but just do not have the passion at the moment. If I was more excited for Warmachine Weekend, then maybe. Warmachine Weekend did finally release a small event schedule, but just a list of the tournament games, non of the fun events yet which is why I was planning to go. Last night we had a personal setback with a broken dryer, so the funds allocated for WMW may have to go to the new dryer (we shall se
Welcome to another review of some of the exciting and shiny things that AoWS are force pulling… (not sorry) out at the moment. Today I am going to be looking at two products, the new X-Wing 2.0 Movement templates and also … Continue reading →
Last night we got in another game of X-Wing 2.0, this time a full 200 points vs 200 points. We were still a bit slow on time (much slower than the 75 minutes allowed in a tournament game), but we are still learning 2.0 and some of the new symbols on the cards.Since I just opened 'Lando's Millennium Falcon' expansion pack, I thought it would be fun giving it a fly. Han Solo and Boba Fett flying siide by side with an escape pod. Since I am still fresh on 2.0 and all the upgrade cards, I based their upgrades on the quick build lists that Fantasy Flight Games offers on their website (and in the new 2.0 packaging).Customized YT-1300 Light Freighter - Han Solo - 71 •Han Solo - The Corellian Kid (54) Marksmanship (1) Chewbacca (4) Rigged Cargo Chute (4) Tactical Scrambler (2) Lando’s Millennium Falcon (6)Firespray-class Patrol Craft - Boba Fett - 103&nb
When we picked up the two X-Wings Starter Sets, I also had my son grab one of the X-Wing 2.0 expansions 'Lando's Millennium Falcon'. With 2.0, I am trying to play more Scum & Villainy instead of Galactic Empire and I really like the Millennium Falcon, so a good way to get into S&V would be the 'Lando's Millennium Falcon'. The reason for the change to S&V is I get to play good and evil (if you consider the Rebels good and the Empire evil). Since majority of the time my son plays the Rebels (heaven forbid he touch the Empire) this will give me a nice change of pace. I'll still occasionally through down the Empire as I still like a lot of their ships.Besides all the Conversion Kits we purchased, 'Lando's Millennium Falcon' is the first expansion we have for X-Wing 2.0.
Last night my son and I finally got in a couple of games of X-Wing 2.0. Just to begin with and refresh my memory on how the game plays (since it has been over 3 years since I played X-Wing) we elected to just start of playing with the Starter Sets. My son was flying the Rebels with a T-65 X-Wing and I was playing the Galactic Empire with 2 Tie Fighters.Game 1 Deployment. It was actually really fun playing again, our first game (as with all new games) we had our heads buried a lot in the rules manual, it was more of me forgetting on how things worked. I spaced out my 2 Tie Fighters in deployment to try and draw the X-Wing towards one of them while I flanked with the other. In this game, the X-wing managed to destroy 1 Tie Fighter and the second Tie Fighter finished off the X-Wing. A win for the Galactic Empire.Lone Tie Fighter destroys X-Wing,In game 2 I deployed both of my Tie Fighters next to each other (no pic, just to try something different). This game moved along much faster
